Holiday Gift Ideas for $5.00 or Less – DHC Aroma Oil

November 25th, 2007 by Karen 12 Comments

The scenario: You want to give fun stocking stuffers but need to do it on a budget.

The solution: DHC Aroma Oils, which come in six different scents and cost a mere $3.50 each!

dhc-aroma-oils

I love giving unusual, hard-to-find gifts as stocking stuffers. I especially love finding cool stuff for a good price. DHC’s Aroma Oils smell yummy, moisturize well and cost a mere $3.50! You’ll be able to stuff all of those stockings and still have a few rupees left over to snag a bottle for yourself.

These aromatherapy oils come in six scents. The entire set takes you from day into night, starting with perky citrus and ending with relaxing sandalwood.

No. 1, Grapefruit – With scents of grapefruit and lemon
No. 2, Citrus Herb – Bergamot, neroli and thyme
No. 3, Fresh Green – Cypress, peppermint and basil
No. 4, Sensual Floral – Jasmine, rose and ylang-ylang
No. 5, Fruity Floral – Neroli, geranium and marjoram
No. 6, Citrus Floral Woodsy – Sandalwood, neroli and bermagot

My two favorites are No. 1 and 6. I write first thing in the morning, so I keep a bottle of No. 1 near my computer. I am NOT a morning person at all and need all the help I can get, so I put a few citrus-scented drops on my hands to moisturize and get a quick morning mood boost. At night I use No. 6 to help me relax by massaging sandalwood-scented oil onto my hands and feet while I’m watching fine television fare like I Love NY 2.

All of the DHC aroma oils are made from natural soy, olive and jojoba oils. I like that the oils are multi-purpose moisturizers and can be used for your face, body and even in your hair. You can also add them to your bath for a luxurious treat.

Each 0.33 oz bottle comes in a colorful box. The bottles have little pops of color too and would look pretty lined up together for display. Each has a nice plastic stopper to release the oil drop by drop, so it doesn’t doesn’t pour all over the place.

Got a scent hound in your life? Give her the entire set ($21.00) along with a pretty fragrance tray for a really special, affordable gift.

I’m so bummed this long weekend is almost over. I spent the day yesterday doing a whole lotta nothing, and I enjoyed every second of it. What do you have in store for this Sunday? Whatever it is I hope it’s fun!

Holiday Gift Ideas for Under $50 – Nuxe Prodigieuse OR

November 23rd, 2007 by Karen 6 Comments

The scenario: You’ve got to buy a gift for someone you don’t know very well and have no clue what to get.

The solution: Nuxe Prodigieuse OR ($39.00), a golden multi-use dry oil for face, body and hair.

nuxe-prodigieuse-or-multi-usage-dry-oil

One thing I love about the holidays is the chance to give someone a gift they would enjoy but probably wouldn’t buy for themselves.

Yes, you could give your sibling’s new girlfriend or your office Kris Kringle person a gift certificate, but honestly, where’s the fun in that? Rather than give her yet another random giftcard to Starbucks — which will probably languish away in a drawer — get her something pretty and useful, like Nuxe’s golden multi-use dry oil, Prodigieuse OR.

The best part about this honey-scented oil is the multi-reflective gold flecks! I love putting it on my legs, arms and shoulders for a glamorous look. And not only is it pretty, but the dry oil also works to nourish, repair and protect skin because it containts a 15 percent concentration of plant oils and vitamin C.

Here are just a few ways to use Huile Prodigieuse OR:

– Add a drop to your foundation, helping it glide on smoothly, and you get a pretty, golden glow.
– Spray some oil into the hollow of your hand and style through hair for a natural look.
– Pour a few drops into your bath water for silky, soft skin.

This would also be a great stocking stuffer or gift for a friend who’s bound for a tropical vacation this winter!

Nuxe is available online at Beautyhabit.com

How was your turkey day? Are you still recovering? I get more excited about the side dishes than the turkey itself, and this year I ate waaaay too many helpings of carby Thanksgiving goodness.

So, now it’s time to pay the piper for all of those slices of pie (*sigh*). I’ll be right back, gotta sneak in a quick run!

MAC Antiquitease: A Soft, Romantic Look for Date Night

November 22nd, 2007 by Karen 19 Comments

I went to the movies last night with El Hub to watch “No Country for Old Men” and to stuff myself silly with popcorn. Here’s the Antiquitease-inspired look I wore on our pre-Thanksgiving date!

mac-antiquitease-fotd-mineralize-eye-shadow-silversmith-engaging-family-silver-pigment-your-ladyship-corsette-lipglass-uppity-fluidline-pluslash

Antiquitease – A Fantastic Date Night Look

This is my new favorite winter date night look. On the fence about trying it?

It’s easy. This look was easier to do than Gilty Kiss, fo’ sho. On date night I like to take my time doing my makeup, and this look took about 25 minutes.

It’s subtle. For a casual movie date, sometimes bold statement looks, like smoky eyes or glossy red lips, are too much. This look has subtle layers of color – blues, browns, golds – and is very feminine and pretty.

It pairs easily with lots of different outfits. I wore it with a powder blue turtleneck, which really brought out the blues from the Silversmith Mineralize eye shadow. This look would work great with a cream, gold, or grey top, too!

Get the Look

The face chart I used is from the “Antiquitease” look on the MAC Web site. I didn’t have all of the suggested colors, so I had to do some improv.

mac-cosmetics-antiquitease-look-holiday-2007-face-chart

MAC face chart: MAC Wedge eye shadow (a soft, muted, golden beige taupe matte) in the inner crease.
Replaced with: A mix of MAC Cork (muted golden brown satin) and MAC Saddle (golden orange brown matte) eye shadows. I think when I do this look again I’ll be leaving out Saddle, ’cause it shows up waaay too orange on my skin.

MAC face chart: Hushabye blush (rich, red, plum sheertone) on the cheeks
Replaced with: MAC Frankly Scarlet blush

MAC face chart: Cream Colour Base Pearl (soft, pale gold with icy shimmer) in center of lid
Replaced with: MAC Bare Canvas Paint (champagne with shimmer)

MAC face chart: Mahogany lip pencil (intense reddish brown)
Replaced with: Nars Amazon lipliner (cool brick red)

I’m off to the gym to work on my fitness – gotta have that extra scoop of mashed potatoes, oy! Happy Thanksgiving!

Chanel Glossimer Lip Gloss, A Makeup Addiction in the Making

November 21st, 2007 by Karen 42 Comments

Oh, boy. I’m in trouble now, because Chanel Glossimer lipgloss has got me feining.

Save me, holy ghost.

chanel-glossimer-equinoxe-myriade-galactic

Myriade is my fave of the three. I paired it with MAC lipstick in Dubonnet.

chanel-glossimer-106-lipgloss-myriade-mac-dubonnet-lipstick

Mad Crazy Big Hearts for:

Color. The sparkle factor is high on these glosses. It’s very grown-up glitter though! I love looking at the color and seeing the different flecks of gold, silver, pink and green.
Texture. Glossimers are thick but aren’t as sticky as MAC Lipglass. You can still feel them on your lip, unlike other thin lipglosses.
Packaging. I love looking at the cap and seeing those gold interlocking C’s. It feels very luxurious.

Little Itty-Bitty Hearts for:

Price. Yeah, it’s an arm and a leg: $25.00 for each. I know, I know.
Limited edition-ness. I really wanted to get the shade that Paris raved about, Astral #104, but unfortunately it’s a limited edition and the counter was out! I almost cried. My wallet sighed in relief.

Are you a Chanel addict? Can you remember your first hit? What should I get next?

Clinique Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift, a Dreamy Anti-Aging Skin Cream

November 21st, 2007 by Karen 12 Comments

Gobble, gobble: A Big Fat HELL-TO-THE-NO to Turkey Neck

Ladies, ladies, ladies … I feel like I can’t say this enough. Start taking care of your neck early! Cause if you don’t, you just might develop a weird complex about your neck lines when you turn, oh, 32!

clinique-zero-gravity-repairwwear-lift

I dream of finding a neck cream that will turn back all the years of my lack of sunscreen wearing (kicking myself for not starting earlier!). So from here on out your girl is gonna be like I LOVE NY 2 when it comes to neck creams! I’m gonna find a neck cream that actually works … even if it kills my ass.

One neck cream that I’ve been using lately is Clinique’s Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift ($52.50). It’s an anti-aging moisturizer with retinol. There are three versions: oily/combination skin, dry/combination skin and very dry skin. I’ve been using the dry/combo skin version for the last month. I put it on my neck at night after toning, and again in the morning before sunscreen.

Big hearts for:
Product texture. I hate products that leave you with a sticky neck, ewwww! Thank goodness Zero Gravity Repairwear Lift has a nice texture that doesn’t leave a greasy, sticky film. It sinks in quickly, has a slightly medicinal scent, which I dig, and after application my neck feels nice and dry!
Moisturization properties. The texture of my neck feels softer and more supple since I started using this religiously.
Evenness in tone. I have noticed that there’s less contrast between the deeper neck lines and the rest of the skin on my neck, and the tone and texture of my skin is more consistent.

Little hearts for:
Price. I wish it were cheaper, but I gotta say that the jar is HUGE. You do get a lot for your money. And for the superior texture and the moisturizing properties, I’d pay for this over and over again.
Complete neck line eradication. I wonder sometimes if we’re set up to believe in skin care miracles because I’ve yet to find a neck cream that truly erases deep neck lines. However, I have to point out that even though the neck lines haven’t been thoroughly zapped away, I have noticed visible improvement in skin texture and tone.

You might heart it if:
– Your skin responds well to retinol products.
– Your neck lines aren’t too pronounced and you need a preventative product.
– You’re a fan of Clinique skin care products.

Are you a Clinique skin care girl? What do you recommend I try next?

I have today off so I’m going to do some cleaning, blogging and I’m going to take a much-delayed trip to the Chanel Counter. Will be back in a few hours with some looty-loot-loot!

Dear New York: Love the Makeup, Hate the Boys

November 21st, 2007 by Karen 7 Comments

Dear New York,

You know how much I enjoy your show. I always look forward to seeing your over-the-top makeup looks.

I’m guessing you’re a MAC girl

i-love-new-york

I know it’s hard to look for love in all the wrong places (shoo’, if you thought finding it on reality TV is difficult, try finding it in San Francisco). Even though you realized that you and Chance can never be, please, for the sake of reality television man and woman kind, stop trying to date guys like him! It’s a recipe for a broken heart.

chance-headed-for-jail

It’s obvious that the only reason why Chance isn’t locked up is because his brother, Real, keeps him in check.

Has it ever occured to you that Real frickin’ rules? He seems nice, yet still has the edge you like so much. Plus, he’s got some fierce hair (I had the same haircut circa 2005-2006).

reals-hair-rules

He seems like such a cool guy. I always thought you should’ve ended up with him.

Godspeed, New York. May you find true love someday, somehow, somewhere.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I love you, MAC Antiquitease!

November 20th, 2007 by Karen 26 Comments

Mind mind keeps telling me nooooo …

Against my better judgement, here’s a pic of a face of the day with makeup from MAC’s Antiquitease Limited Edition Collection. El hub walked into the bathroom and announced oh-so-loudly that it was time to eat, and subsequently scared the bejeebus out of me:

antiquitease-gilty-kiss-fotd-funny-karen

I know, right?

I’m so glad that I finally dug into the Antiquitease Mineralize Eye Shadows ($16.50 each) because THEY RULE!

antiquitease-eye-shadows-all

I haven’t felt this way about a MAC eye product since I discovered Fluidline! I love how the shadows are so sheer but still have just enough color punch. Plus, they build super easily and they look kinda space-agey cool with their weird domes and veins of color.

Here are a few less goofy pics from the Antiquitease “Gilty Kiss” look that I tried last night:

antiquitease-gilty-kiss-fotd-looking-down

antiquitease-gilty-kiss-fotd-paris-cues

Everything I used was from MAC, except the blush and lip liner, which are from Rimmel.

mac-antiquitease-gilty-kiss-look

I think I just might have a new addiction. I’m gonna have to grab every single pan of MES that comes out in the future. Yay for my makeup collection, boo for my wallet.

Are you a Mineralize Eye Shadow addict? What are your favorite combos?

A potential New Year’s resolution?

Have you heard the song by Wyclef called “Sweetest Girl?” It’s fantastic. It’s got a very upbeat sound, but at the same time if you *really listen* to the lyrics, it’s very sad. The disconnect between the happy music and sad words somehow makes the song work.

I heard it driving home, so of course the first thing I had to do when I got to my computer was watch the video on YouTube. In addition to the original video, I also found several acoustic versions done by regular folks with just a guitar! And wow, there are so many talented singers out there. Check out this version of “Sweetest Girl.” It’s pretty good:

I love to sing (back in the day I used to take lessons), but I’m usually too shy to sing in front of people. I think in 2008 I’m gonna learn how to play guitar, and perhaps someday work up the guts to do a version of this song on my own.

Are you already thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions? Watcha got so far?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

The Gold Standard: The Best MAC Limited Edition Brush Sets to Buy this Holiday Season

November 20th, 2007 by Karen 23 Comments

The Golden Girls

You know your girl loves the brushes! If you’re going to spend any money on brushes this holiday season then bring your bad self to the MAC counter because they’ve got some really pretty — and surprisingly practical — gilded goodies. Ohh, la luxe!

mac-hierlooms-brushes-4-face-brushes-5-basic-brush-set

For holiday 2007, MAC has a collection called Heirlooms, which features cute clutch bags and several different brush sets. By far my favorites are Heirlooms: 4 Face Brushes and Heirlooms 5: Basic Brushes. I love these sets because of the gold handles! And not only are they pretty to look at, but they’re surprisingly useful too.

What’s the deal with the “SE”?

The “SE” sets are different than the regular, full-price brushes you buy individually at MAC. SE handles are shorter and lighter. Although the SE brush heads are great, they aren’t as soft as my regular MAC brushes. I prefer longer-handled brushes that have weight to them, but I do like SE brushes for travel or for touch-ups, like after a gym workout. I think of them as my “occasional” brushes, rather than everyday “workhorse” brushes.

If you plan to buy these brushes, I’d recommend that you either be:

– a brush newbie who plans on building a collection of brushes, but needs a good starting off point
– a lovely lady on a strict brush budget
– a brush junkie who need a set of small handled brushes that will only be used for travel and on-the-go touchups, and not everyday use

The brush breakdown

mac-holiday-2007-heirloom-brushes

With brushes, I really don’t believe in limiting a brush to a specific use – i.e., this brush is for the crease only, or this brush is for concealer only. I really like to mix and match my brushes according to the products that I’m using and how I’m feeling that day. Here’s a general breakdown of how I’d use the brushes in these sets.

Heirlooms: 4 Face Brushes ($48.00)

This set comes with the a cutie-pie clutch purse made from Chanel-esque gold tweed! To peep the brushes that come with this set, check the picture above and start from the left-hand side:

168 – Large angle contour brush. I’d use this for applying blush to the hollows of the cheek, to contour, or for specific placement of highlighting powder. In a pinch I’d wet this and use it as a foundation brush.
187 – Duo fibre brush. This is the famous MAC “skunk” brush, made from a blend of soft goat and synthetic fibers. The MAC Web site says that this is used for lightweight application and blending of face powder or pigments. I’d use this as a foundation brush, as a blush brush, as a highlight brush and as a blending brush.
194 – Concealer brush. I’d use this for undereye concealer and for layering powder shadow on top of soft kohl liners, like MAC Technakohl.
190 – Foundation brush. If you’ve used this brush before as a foundation brush and it works for you then I give you big props. I have this brush in the full-sized version, but can’t seem to get this to work on me. I always end up with patchy application. For foundations I actually like the 182 buffer brush! The price is an arm and a leg but it’s well worth it. The 190 is still a useful brush though, and would be good for getting foundation into places the 182 doesn’t go easily, like the corners of the nose. I’d also use this for creme blush.

The cold, hard math: If you purchased the full-sized version of these 4 brushes it would cost you $124.50.

Heirlooms: 5 Basic Brush Set ($45.00)

Check the cute, gold fake-snakeskin container this comes in. I love it ’cause it looks expensive. Plus, the brushes are useful, too! The five brushes that come with this set are in the pic above starting from the right hand side:

219 – Eye detail brush. This brush has a small brush head with fibers that are gathered into a pencil-shaped tip. I use it for shadow application right at the lash line, or precise application of color to the outer-v. I’ve tried to use it in the crease but have had just so-so results.
316 – Lip brush. In a pinch I’d also use this for fine spot concealing, or for applying gel liners like Fluidline.
266 – Brow brush. WOOT! You know you’re girl can’t live without her 266. I use this every day to apply Concrete shadow to my brows. I know some folks like to use the 266 to line the eyes with Fluidline, too.
129 – Powder/blush brush. In a pinch I’d also use this as a foundation brush.
239 – Eye shader brush. I love this brush. It’s great for both powder and emollient products (MAC Paint, concealers) and has so many uses. You can use it to apply shadow all over the lid, or in the crease, or to blend out harsh lines. Oh, and it can also teach you how to speak French! Okay, totally kidding about that last one. But still, it’s a fantastical, multi-use brush that I’m sure you’ll fall in love with.

The cold, hard math: If you purchased the full-sized version of these 5 brushes it would cost you $119.50.

Both sets give you brushes with a wide range of possibilities. But if you’re watching your budget and can only purchase one set I’d recommend:

– buying the 4 Basic Brush Set if you have a good working set of everyday go-to brushes
– buying the 5 Basic Brush Set if you’re new to brushes and need a good starting point

The OG Original Gangsta Golden Girls

golden-girls

Before there was Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte there was Blanche, Dorothy, Sophia and Rose.

Did you ever watch this show? All my gay guy friends love it, and so do I. It seems to be on Lifetime (television for women!) every other hour and it *always* cracks me up.

I think I’m mostly Sophia with a touch of Rose, ha! How about you?

I hope your morning was a relaxing one. I’m still recovering from the P. Hilt interview (this whole weekend was REALLY STRESSFUL) but am now looking forward to hitting the Chanel counter for a lil’ relaxation and reward.

Two days ’till turkey — are you ready?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen
