A Good Zombie Survival Kit Should Include the New Smashbox Be Discovered Cream Cheek Trios

January 3rd, 2012 by Karen 50 Comments

To someone with survival training, including the Smashbox Be Discovered Cream Cheek Trios ($29 each) in my zombie apocalypse survival kit probably makes about as much sense as a Shake Weight, but believe you me, if the dead one day rise, I will not go down without a fight, and I won’t evacuate without bringing at least a little bit of makeup.

El Hub laughs, but it’s the truth. (SIDE NOTE: I used to work with a woman who wore false lashes every single day, even once when she had to go in for surgery! Now that’s what I’m talking about.)

The two new trios are part of the Smashbox Be Discovered collection for spring 2012, and since they fit in the palm of a hand, it’s not like they’d take up much space in a typical survival kit. There’d still be plenty of room left for peanut butter, toilet paper and various kinds of weaponry.

Tabs might even let me stash them in his cat carrier (along with his Fancy Feast in gravy, of course). 🙂

Zombie survival kit

Both trios come with two cream blushes and a cream highlighter. The first, In Lights, leans warm, while the second one, Show Biz, leans cool.

If I happen to run out of room to pack brushes, no problem. With these, I could always rely on my fingers to apply and blend. Not only would it be easier, but it would also keep my hands free to wield a machete for zombie self-defense.

I’ve had trouble with some cream blushes sliding off my skin, but not these. They latch on like zombie teeth and don’t let go for nothin’!

Since moisturizer may be hard to come by after Z-Day, it’s a good thing these apply so evenly and don’t emphasize any dry, flaky patches on my cheeks.

I am a little concerned about the sheer highlighters, though… If I assume we end up living off the land somewhere remote (El Hub thinks we should avoid population centers), I’ll probably get a killer tan, and because the highlighters aren’t heavily pigmented, they may not show up well if my skin turns a darker shade of caramel.

Oh, well. In a zombie apocalypse, I guess I’ll just have to make do. 🙂

Beautiful things

I saw this pic today and just had to share. It’s of a snow leopard and her cub, and it was taken with a remote camera on a peak in Afghanistan’s Sarkund Valley by the Wildlife Conservation Society, an organization that works to save wildlife and wild places worldwide.

It’s supposed to be quite a rare thing to spot these big cats in the wild, let alone capture them on digital film.

I love the mama cat’s intense eyes and the curve of both of their tails. Such beautiful animals.

Speaking of beauty, have you had a chance to check out the new MAC, Naturally and Iris Apfel collections?

I’m drooling over MAC, Naturally’s (gosh, that comma makes things so awkward) neutral colors and have my eyes on the Mineralize Shadows, Blushes, Skinfinishes and that nifty-looking 286 Duo Fibre Blending Brush.

I hope the rest of your day went off without a hitch. Hopefully you were able to sneak in a little fun. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ahh! Pretty pretty 😉 I’ll have to check these for ‘cones, because both shades (er… all six shades?) look lovely.

& bleh, I know what you mean about MAC, Naturally. It’s cute on its own, but punctuation in a title ≠ a flowing paragraph!

I have a zombie survival kit. Not lying. To non zombieholic friends and family its the Survival Kit with two weeks supply everything three cats and two humans will need. This includes three kitty carriers in case a Hurricane Katrina situation happens. Not a literal hurricane since I live in the Canadian Praries but still. If something Very Bad happens I’m taking the cats with me. While I was cleaning the basement yesterday I found a crowbar and actually felt happy. Hmmm. I think Show Biz needs to be in The Kit too.

Finding a crowbar would bring me great joy, too. Better put that aside along with the carriers!

Have you seen the Planet Earth series? They had a segment on the snow leopards and managed to catch some on video. They are beautiful animals.

omg yes. when i sit on the couch he starts walking around me … scouting for the most advantageous cuddle spot! he does the same when the hubs sits on the recliner. 😀

plus when the bedroom door opens, he’s sure to dart in and jump up our … errrrmmm… his bed!

          • Karen says

            January 4th, 2012 at 8:13 pm

Awww! Tabs does the same thing. His favorite thing to do is plop down right smack dab in either me or El Hub’s spot on the bed. When either of us try to move him he gets very, very fussy.

Even though tabbies are divas… they rule!

Karen, i’ve never really worked with cream blushes before – what’s the best way to apply these? Aside from a sponge or fingers, what kind of brush would be best? Thanks in advance!

      Hi Christine,

I usually do fingers with cream blushes because the warmth from my hands seems to melt the product right into my skin, but you could also use a synthetic skunk brush or a flat top brush. A few ideas:

The Sonia Kashuk Flat Top Blusher Brush
      The MAC 188

HTH! Let me know if you have any other questions. 🙂

I love that you’re thinking about packing light in the makeup department during the zombie apocalypse. You definitely don’t want to be fumbling with a lot of brushes (unless you’ve sharpened their handles into shivs). 🙂

Do you know if they used the snow leopard footage for Planet Earth? There was a great sequence featuring a mama and her cub. Actually, that whole series is amazing!

      Hi Kim,

Makeup brushes as improv weaponry is genius! I’ll have to sell El Hub on that.

I think those pics are different from Planet Earth; they were taken pretty recently in October. I remember that sequence and being really moved by it. 🙂

I hope El Hub will be on board! I’ll try to think of some more makeup-as-weapons ideas. 🙂

I loved the leopards, too. They have those amazing tails for balance. It’s great that we can see rare and non-native animals (in a non-invasive way) through pictures and video. Zoos make me so sad, so this is a great alternative. 🙂

I just pray that I won’t poke my eye out! The chances of it happening would be high, sadly.

El Hub and I just had a long discussion about zoos a week or so ago. On one hand, I feel awful for the animals — especially the big ones that are designed to roam long distances, like elephants and giraffes. At the same time, though, I think they also allow people the chance to fall in love and appreciate animals they’re never get to see up close.

Survival kit in 2012, in general, is a WINNER!

I also have a very numb question: I have never used more than one colour for my cheeks (I am too much in love with “In love” from Chanel for a change right now, honestly), but just in case: how exactly do you apply these three shades? I assume one is a highliter, but the other two?

Not a dumb question at all! You could either mix the colors together, or do the darker shade first and then layer the brighter on as a pop of color at the bottom of your cheek. 🙂

Ooh, perfect survival kit – I actually have had to evacuate several times due to forest fires, and the cat crate, Nutella and expensive skincare are the first things into the car. I could last a good year on Nutella, easy – I’ve been known to put away a family size jar in one sitting in front of the telly – I use a large cooking spatula to eat it:)

Gorgeous snow leopard pic, so rare to get footage! And I’m drooling over the new MAC lippies from that collection, I love the orangey red.
