What Keeps You Awake at Night?

December 13th, 2008 by Karen 43 Comments

Do you ever have a hard time getting a good night’s sleep? I do, like last night — I guess I stayed up too late or ate too late or … did something too late because I woke up after just a few hours of sleep and wasn’t able to doze off again.

The thing I can never figure out is why I sleep differently from night to night, even though I try to keep the same patterns before bed. What makes me able to sleep a full eight hours one night but then struggle to fall asleep at all the next?

One thing’s for sure — I know I’m not the only woman reading this blog who has trouble sleeping from time to time. At least 60 million Americans each year experience at least occasional sleep trubs. Beyond that, women are 1.4 times more likely to have problems sleeping than men are, yippee!

What keeps you awake at night?

Oh, well, I guess that’s what naps, concealer and coffee are for… 🙂

My mother always says that the best cure for a bad night’s sleep is a bad night’s sleep, under the theory that you’ll be so tired from not sleeping the night before that you’ll fall asleep much easier the next time. =3

I had trouble sleeping the last couple days because I was starting a new job (my first office job!) and I was SOOOO worried!

My boyfriend had trouble sleeping too. As soon as we got back we climbed into bed, BS’ed around on the Super Nintendo for a while, then passed out! Yikes!

    Hi Karen!
I wish I had trouble sleeping. Other than the twice a year occasions when sleep doesn’t come, I’m on the other end of the spectrum; I’m always sleepy! If I could trade some of my sleep for some of your waking hours, I totally would. Have you tried taking a warm bath in the middle of the night when you can’t sleep? Sometimes that helps me (not that I need to do so very often.) That, or try one of those relaxation cd’s with birds chirping and brooks babbling. Sometimes I listen to them when I’m stressed, and I generally end up asleep. :-/ Hope you have a great weekend!

Aww! At least it’s a Saturday though, you can try to be a bit lazy today. I usually cant sleep due to anxiety. I just sit in bed and think about anything and everything that is worrying me.

It’s finals week, and so of course I need my sleep more than ever! Unfortunately, when I’m stressed out I don’t sleep as well, so it’s a downward spiral. Oh well, when finals are over, I’ll probably treat myself to a shopping expedition to Sephora. It makes everything better. 🙂

I can’t afford not to sleep I am cranky by nature and juggle abt half a million things all in a ny minute sleep is essential for me ok hope things level out do a hard workout today that will wipe you out and rid you of anxieties you may not be aware of !!

I fall asleep well, but I tend to wake up numerous times as it gets closer to time to get up. I actually enjoy falling asleep again…my husband thinks I’m crazy because I feel cheated if I sleep all the way through the night!

I sleep through the night usually, but dream like I’m on LSD… which means waking up feeling tired because of the cracked out things I’ve been doing all night.

I know that for me, it’s always SUPER hard to get OUT of bed, and I feel sleepy and groggy for like 3 hours after getting up. But when it comes to going to bed ON TIME, I end up laying there forever. I can’t turn my brain on and off when I want to anymore.

I sleep okay when there’s a good chance to do so, but it’s not uncommon for me to stay awake because a song is stuck in my head, or because there’s something semi-interesting on late-night TV, or because I’m still on the computer.

it used to take me *forever* to fall asleep. everything from the day would replay in my head and usually my body is so achey because of my erratic schedule. so my cure for that is 1/2 a milligram of xanax with two tylenol pm’s. i sleep so well!

I usually have a hard time falling asleep when I drink caffeine too late in the day. Or I go to bed too late and get anxious because I have to wake up really early.

When you find that you have trouble going back to sleep, the best thing to do is get out of bed and engage in some light activity (e.g. reading a book). That helps keep your mind occupied in something that might tire you out without stimulating yourself to be too awake.

OMG that sucks! I’m usually a good sleeper but out of the blue I won’t be able to sleep. A few weeks ago I had a serious case of Insomnia due to the anti biotics I was taking for my ear infection. Even the Advil PM would only work so long. I used to have a problem with the anxiety but keeping a pad and pen next to the bed squashes that or call my mom or something. I hope that you get a good night’s sleep soon. The bear on your bed is cute!!

I am a very very light sleeper and always have been. Everything wakes me up, my 3 cats jumping on and off the bed, my dog panting in my face because he wants out, then he barks to come in. My hubbie’s snoring, the list goes on and on. I usually take a Melatonin before bed and it definitely helps!

I can never sleep. I went to bed at 10 and it’s 12 right now, I woke up and can’t get back to sleep.

I used to be a good sleeper. A few years ago I slept through half of my house being knocked down by a digger and lots of builders, my mom had to come through and wake me up because they were knocking down my wall next, lol!

It doesn’t help that my cat likes to crawl around my head and sleep right beside my face either!

I went to bed at midnightish and woke up at 3:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep. I ended up watching Love Actually and packing some light stuff. I didn’t want to make any noise for my neighbors. I ended up taking a nap from 9 to 1.

I’m going to make a playlist of sleepy music for my iPod and keep that by my bed when I have trubs falling asleep. 🙂

    Have a lovely evening!

    Hi Almira,

It seems like in my adult life starting a new job has always equals no sleep! I usually stay up and think about all of the stuff I still need to learn and the things I have to do.

Sometimes I miss all of the low-key jobs I had in high school and college… back then I slept like a baby!

Well currently, what’s keeping me at night is my sickness. :/ I’ve been sick about a week now and I keep waking up in the middle of the night either coughing my heart out or I can’t breathe because of my blocked nose. Ugh it’s frustrating. 🙁

    Karen,
You can always drink warm milk. It works for some.
Or, you can get a prescription from your doctor or PCP for Rozarem.
    Go to http://www.rozarem.com
Remember the comercial with President Lincoln and the groundhog. It is just trying to tell you ” your dreams are missing you.” The medication is a non scheduled drug and non- habit forming.

I’ve had trouble sleeping for a while now…sosmetimes it’s because I worry so much; other times it’s because I OD’d that day on my Starbucks addiction. What usually works (and I know it’s a lil TMI) is if I rub one out before I go to sleep. Nothing like an orgasm to put my lights out. I don’t do it every night but if i have something important in the morning and need to be well-rested, it’s a super-fast fix.

LMAO…That really was TMI. Can’t wait for the Monday Poll.
