Beauty Revelations, March 21, 2012: Blue Lips, Green Eyes, a Tiny Wand and Tata Harper

1. There’s something very Hunger Games about blue lipstick

illamasqua apocalips

I wonder what Katniss’s prep team would say about Illamasqua’s Lipstick in Apocalips ($24.60, and part of the new Human Fundamentalism collection). Something tells me it would appeal to their Capitol sensibilities.

(Yes, I have a bad case of Hunger Games fever…)

2. I like to call it “Illamasqua’s Eye Shadow in Kermit the Frog”

illamasqua pivot

But that’s its unofficial name. Officially, this matte yellowish green Powder Eye Shadow is called Pivot ($24.50, and also part of the Illamasqua Human Fundamentalism collection), and it only looks like my favorite amphibian.

illamasqua pivot

I think it’s a neat spin (or pivot, one could say) on a bright-eyed look. To wear it, I like to pat Pivot on my lids (no fallout, yay!), sweep a small amount of MAC Bamboo into the crease (for an easy color transition, and to give the look some depth), and then add two layers of Diorshow New Look Mascara (see below).

Springy *ribbit!* and fun.

3. Could the Diorshow New Look Mascara wand actually be any smaller?

diorshow new look mascara wand

Because I don’t know… It’s just so tiny!

The wand attached to Diorshow’s New Look Mascara ($28.50, a volumizing formula) is the polar opposite of the XXL wand that comes with the original Diorshow.

But small or not, this little wizard works. I’ve been using two coats for wispy, feathery lashes.

4. For the record, it’s not easy to look cute while you’re spritzing…

tata harper

But who cares, right? 🙂 More importantly, I think I might be addicted to this Hydrating Floral Essence spray by Tata Harper Skincare ($65).

I spritz this 100% natural moisturizing miracle on my face throughout the day (even when I’m wearing makeup) — basically, whenever my skin feels thirsty.

Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Rosa damascena flower water, Citrus aurantium (Neroli) distillate, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice, Lavandula angustifolia (Lavender) flower water, Hamamelis virginiana (Witch Hazel) distillate, Leuconostoc ferment filtrate (radish root extract), Sodium hyaluronate (naturally produced fermentation), Salix alba (Willow) bark extract, Centella asiatica (Gotu Kola) extract, Oryza sativa (Rice) extract, Aloe barbadensis leaf juice powder*, Soy peroxidase (derived from soy), Superoxide dismutase (derived from horseradish root)

Hella pricey, yes, but I really think my skin looks fresher and plumper when I use this (and doesn’t feel as tight).

5. In a word, Laura Mercier’s new Oil Free Supreme Foundation rocks

I just started wearing it this week and love, love, LOVE the stuff.

Laura Mercier’s Oil Free Supreme Foundation ($42) has a lightweight, oil- and fragrance-free formula offering full coverage with a matte finish. I wear it in Suntan Beige, one of 12 available shades.

As a side, I think it photographs exceptionally well (I’m wearing it in the pics above).

P.S. Oh, yeah. 🙂 Happy hump day!

I love that eyeshadow. I love chartreuse shades, even though I never wear them.

What nail polish are you wearing?

      Hi Chris,

I think I love chartreuse, too. I have a chartreuse shirt that needs to get more love…

Anywho, about those nails. I’m wearing my Sonia Kashuk/Dolce & Gabbana/China Glaze St. Patrick’s Day mani:

Your skin looks fab! And I realllly can’t wait for The Hunger Games! My fiance bought us tickets to the IMAX showing on Friday night, eee!

And I think I get taken out for ice cream beforehand, which is always good.

      Hi Chelsea,

NICE. I’m dragging my guy to the midnight showing. We’re both taking disco naps so that we stay awake, LOL!

What’s your fave ice cream flavor? When I go to Baskin Robbins, I’m all about the pistaschio or the Jamoca Almond Fudge.

I’ve never been to a Baskin Robbins, actually!

I love anything with chocolate! But sometimes I get a hankering for strawberry. Oooh, or black cherry!

My favorite was in France, and they put gelato through a machine to make it soft serve and it’s AMAZING!

No cones though, unfortunately, gluten and I don’t get along.

Wow, really? They have some pretty good flavors. I’ve been going there since I was a kid…

If you ever visit SF you have to make a note to hit up the ice cream shops. There’s a bunch of interesting ones in the City. Hmm, maybe I need to do an SF post documenting the best ice cream shops in SF. Imagine the “research.” 🙂

      Hi Gina G,

It’s kind of a crazy color, right? Would you wear this during the day? Or would it be more of a Halloween kind of thing?

Uhhh…. Karen? :- # Gurl, you are free to express yourself anytime :). May I suggest, however, that a deeper shade of blue lip colour might be your friend ;D. Along with a more matte foundation, and some white eyeliner? And an, uh, more creative lip shape?
Why not do a feature on the OCC lip tars? Those are hella bright …. er, creative, too!
But, bravo for the bold choice 🙂

Haha this post makes me laugh (and yes, this little piggy needs to go to bed)! I actually think you wear Pivot really well! I checked Diorshow New Look out today, and I was also really surprised by the size of the brush! I was really tempted, but I know that non-waterproof mascaras would NOT hold my curls, so I’ll probably give it a pass!

I love how the new foundation looks on you! Can’t wait to see your review (and for it to get here haha)! But maybe I should invest in a tinted moisturizer with an SPF before trying another foundation. Choices choices choices… 🙂

      Hi Shana,

I have very dry cheeks and the foundations worked great. It doesn’t catch onto the flakes or emphasize them.

Oh, Laura also makes another version called “Moisture Supreme Foundation.” You might want to give that a go as well.

The lipstick reminds me of when one of the kids eats blue candy. It’s totally funny, but I must say, your lipstick is colored in the lines while theirs is definitely not. 🙂

That eyeshadow is so springlike and funky! Definitely a fun color.

I hear you! It was actually a fabulous trip. We didn’t have any free time (except to go to dinner, but we went as a group). You’ll be proud that I dragged everyone to Sephora, though. 🙂 You just can’t beat the weather – it’s so beautiful. The downside was that between work and the time difference, I only got to talk to the boys for about 2 minutes the entire week!

You can see how I couldn’t resist checking in, despite claiming not to want to know about the Hunger Games. I’m not the person who reads the last page of a book or anything, but I’m close! 🙂

I wouldn’t ever call the choice of this lipstick or eye shadows beautiful or classy, but to each it’s own… To me it looks like you have some type of disease, I am sorry for saying this to you. 🙂
Please don’t take it personally, but in our days we can find such gorgeous shadows and lipsticks, why to look like this? But like I said, to each it’s own!!

I love this LM foundation though. I always used Chanel, but this one appeals to me for some reason. Too bad it will hit the market in April only, wish I could try it now.

Have a great day and enjoy the make up!

Love the eyeshadow on you. I do think if you wanted to work the teal lippy you need to really thickly apply it and maybe add a clear gloss. I’m going to get it tonight since it matches my hair – I have aqua with lime highlights. It’s practically a neutral! Ha ha.

I think you’d look awesome in some of the funky Illamasqua colours. Disciple is a deep matte navy, and the new dark purple one is also great for a dramatic evening look. Underworld is a very pretty purple/pink sheer duochrome. So unique, yet not out of the question for a trip to Petco. They’re all a bit on the matte, dry-textured side so the colours wear well and apply true to the tube.

And some of the glosses are fun but just slightly unusual. Fierce, the blue-purple repromoted with this collection in the US, is really fun.
