This Garden’s a Trip! The Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Garden Collection for Spring and Summer 2012

There’s something wicked out in the garden, and it’s cosmetics!

“A different shade of floral” — that’s how Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics describes their new spring/summer Garden collection of colors inspired by psychotropic and poisonous plants.

Yep, these aren’t your usual pastels and dainty florals. The color palette, with its nearly-neon hues and earthy neutrals, reminds me of the time I unwittingly ate one of my brother’s “special” brownies before going grocery shopping (he left them out on the counter at home without a warning/explanation).

I must have stood in the Safeway veggie aisle for 15 minutes, just fondling the eggplants and oranges, and marveling at how smooth and shiny everything was.

Man, what a weird day…

An indie makeup line out of New York, Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics (OCC) carries a pretty wide range of makeup, tools and nail polishes, but they’re probably best known for their lightweight Lip Tars — intensely pigmented lip products with the texture of a gloss and the longevity of a lipstick.

The company also prides itself on their 100% vegan pledge and cruelty-free formulas that steer clear of parabens and artificial preservatives.

The Garden collection features six Lip Tars ($14 each), five Loose Colour Concentrate pigments ($12 each), six Nail Lacquers ($8 each) and one Cosmetic Glitter ($12), and all of them are bound for OCC’s permanent line.

I’m still getting to know the products, but I’m already intrigued by the Lip Tars and Nail Lacquers, in particular Ophelia Lip Tar and Chlorophyll Lacquer.

The brand isn’t widely available yet, but it looks like they’re expanding (here’s a list of places that carry it).

Spring fling

Tabs, taking a break from gardening last summer

All this gardening talk is getting me in the mood to refresh my planters. I let the flowers I planted last year slip away over the fall and winter, so all I have now are basically sad piles of dirt-crusted catnip that not even Tabs will touch.

If my allergies aren’t too bad this weekend, I think I’m going to hit up the local gardening store to see what’s blooming. 🙂

Are you planning to do any gardening this year? What are your favorite flowers and plants?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I’ve only seen OCC cosmetics at IMATS, but it’s nice to know that they’re expanding!

HA ohhh do I have a similar story about magic brownies. Once at a bday party, someone brought these special brownies and warned everyone around that they were to be eaten sparingly. Apparently one of my good friends was outside when this announcement was made, and proceeded to eat 6 of them. SIX. Needless to say he had a great freakout sesh where I had to go all nurse-mode on him and bring him back down. It was hysterical.

Did you know the Digitalis (foxglove) plant is used to make a very common heart drug, Digoxin? It’s used for heart failure b/c it increases the contractility of the heart.

    ALSO..

Bella Donna (deadly nightshade) is used to make Atropine, a drug that has powerful anticholinergic effects. It’s called Bella Donna b/c apparently women would eat some of the leaves, dilating their pupils which was thought to make them more attractive. So the beauty connection comes full circle!

This beauty and science portion is brought to you by Fannie 🙂

My dad tells me about the women who would take belladonna every time I go to the eye doctors and have to get my eyes dialated, lol.

I actually have a super-weird phobia about foxgloves (I identified them early on as a deadly plant of which we happened to have a million outside, and I don’t dig flowers that can grow taller than I am) and my parents would point out to Child Me “foxgloves keep your grandpa alive!” Didn’t matter.

I guess it goes without saying that I’m not going to be picking up a Digitalis lip tar. 🙂

Huh! The Lip Tars look intriguing!

We usually grow herbs, but we never end up using too many of them. I think this year we will just plant rosemary and basil as those are ones we seem to use most.

I love those loose colours and especially Mimosa and Triptych. I guess some of those lip tars could be used for layering. I don’t know if I would wear Chlorophyll all by itself (aside from Halloween).

Those lip tars look amazing. Especially the Chlorophyll one. I can totally see Effie wearing that… (yes I’m still on a major Hunger Games kick).

Lip Tars are an amazing product. I bought two at the IMATS here and have been addicted ever since. They have crazy pigment and wear really nicely for a long time. Even when they fade, they leave a lovely stain. Glad to see they’re expanding out some!

    Hi Kare,
If you get a chance to wear the liptars would you please let us know if you find these drying? I love the Belladonna one.
Coincedentally, I thought of gardner Tabs this morning b/c I bought my kitty guy one of those green grass plants at Whole Foods which he chomped on and then procedeed to throw up. Oh well…

Hi! I’m alexa from Philippines. Lip Tars look interesting especially for summer and spring. However, I am quite unsure about the colors belladonna and chlorophyll. Is there a certain makeup look that suits those colors? On the other hand, I find those colors sexy for the nails. =)

I enjoyed reading through your blogs. I’m a beginner in blogging.

Check to see if anything is growing in those planters. I have a few potted plants that don’t do very well because of where they are, yet I still get a few things sprouting up the next Spring, either perennials that come back or annuals that have reseeded themselves.

I like some of the eye colors, but I still haven’t got enough courage to try loose shadows!

I only have indoor plants that live all-year-round. A couple of pots of fern, some jelly bean plant, orchid, and the like. As long as something is green and isn’t too hard to take care of I’m in!
