Rappers Delight in a Plum From the 212: The New MAC Yung Rapunxel Lipstick by Azealia Banks

September 7th, 2012 by Karen 37 Comments

mac yung rapunxel

I can’t rap to save my life, but you already knew this, right? 🙂

Oh, what I wouldn’t give to be able to spit bars on the fly…

Because if I had to battle someone on a street corner, I’d be so screwed!

A rap attack

But hey, I guess if I’m ever overwhelmed with the urge to drop some beats, I could just wear the new MAC Lipstick in Yung Rapunxel ($15) instead.

This creamy deep plum is the product of MAC’s new collaboration with rising New York rapper/singer/lyricist Azealia Banks.

Azealia Banks, 1991

The name, Yung Rapunxel, is also her alter ego.

I’d never heard of her before the lipstick, but I gotta say — I’m diggin’ her style. It kinda has a ’90s house music vibe to it…if Lil’ Kim lived in the house. Or something like that.

As for the lipstick, I like. It’s definitely dramatic, and I think the semi-matte finish goes well with it.

I get the sense that Yung is one of those colors that would look really fab on gals with very light or very dark skin tones.

What do ya think? If you’re ready to make music with Yung Rapunxel, you can find it online now at maccosmetics.com (in the US only though), and in New York City MAC stores until September 20 (it’s limited edition).

MC K-Dawg

That’s such a hot shade, I need to get my hands on it. I can really imagine how it’d look on paler skin though, it’d look absolutely gorgeous!

I think you pull it off, but I know I can’t wear this color. It just wouldn’t suit me. And I just know the boyfriend wouldn’t approve, lol 🙂

You carry this color off so well, and you are comfy with this color! K-dawg (and T-money) should keep rapping!

I always fancy such colors in the tube, and they look OK, when i wear them-but they never make me feel cozy, comfy and cute (does that even make sense?), UNLESS, i wear them with a single swipe and top with some glossimer of some kind!

This looks amazing on you– but do you really think it would look good on really fair people? It looks terrifying to me! So dark! Maybe it’s worth a risk?

      Hi Erin,

I happen to really love the contrast of a rich, vampy lip against pale skin. If you’re not used to seeing it on you, it can be shocking, but I think it’s very beautiful and very much a statement look. All you’d have to do is add some mascara (or maybe even some falsies) for a dramatic look!

      Hi Trystan,

I have a few colors like that in my lipstick stash, not gonna lie! I have this crazy teal shade from Illamasqua that I only wear around the house, LOL!

Maybe you can get this color and rock it with your sweats at home? Trust me, it can be fun. 😀

Karen! I totally do that too, especially if we spend the weekends in. I’ll wear pjs and my vampiest, darkest red lipstick and surf the web. When my man stop in to say hi, he’s always shocked. hehehe

      Hi Dominique,

I hope you make the jump! The amplified lipstick finishes are great. Long-lasting, comfy and really intense.

If you like to wear lip liner, the shade Nightmoth would pair nicely with this lippie.

Karen! I’m so happy that you featured a stellar up and coming artist! Azelia Banks has so much confidence and energy plus raw talent. Her songs always shock and delight me.

Her lyrics are pretty racy so it’s great that you put up her video anyway.

As for the lip colour, it’s a little too drastic for me. I’ll stick to the pale pink with hint lavender lip colour for the fall. Currently in love Tarte’s Lip Surgence natural matte lip tint in Hope. This morning, I threw on a pair of faded grey sweatpants and put on the lip tint because the colour is so pretty (and hopefully cancels out the grubbiness of the sweatpants – just a little).

      Hi Linh,

I didn’t know you liked hip-hop! Yeah, some of her songs are kinda naughty, but I like that about her. She reminds me of Kim in that way.

Are there any other new up-and-coming artists that you like? I’m always looking for new music to listen to.

AND YAY for wearing lipstick with sweats! I’m all for that.

Man, I looove hip hop! I can’t think of any up and coming hip hop stars right off the bat but the old school hip hop is usually enough for me.

Here’s a collection of new music that I’ve been loving:
Frank Ocean’s – Channel Orange album – soulful R&B, profound lyrics, and oh my, can that boy produce brilliant and unique songs.

The xx – Coexist (out next week, can preorder) – this is the kind of music you fall in love to. So full of wonderment and longing but manages to stay minimalist.

Fiona Apple – The Idler Wheel – a great collection showcasing stripped down vocals, drums and raw talent.

Grimes – Visions – super funky and fun electro-pop. I listen to this when I feel like dancing by myself.

Lana Del Ray’s album from last year – Born to Die – Mean girls, bad boys, lovely messes and the darker American dream. Among my most listened to albums of last year. I’m still listening to it today! Get a taste of Lana’s haunting voice and lyrics by Youtubing, “Video Games.” That song makes me feel drunk on love.

This color is out of my comfort zone, for sure, but it actually looks terrific on you. I don’t say that with any kind of surprise because nearly every lip color looks great on you. 🙂 This is particularly nice for such a bold, different color, though!

      Hi Kim,

It’s a very fall color! I think if you ever get the chance you should try it at least once because you just never know if a color will move ya.

How’s your Monday going so far? Good, I hope! I just finished a long run and a play session with Tabs, so things on this end are on the up and up.

Ahh, I’m not really scared of dark vampy shades but the purple family just doesn’t agree with me when it comes to lip colors! I can only wear something with a lot more pink or red like MAC Rebel!
