How to Marry a Showgirl: The Many Faces of the New MAC Marilyn Monroe Eyeshadows

Being the right-hand human to an international plus-size kitty supermodel can be a real chore if you’re not, you know, in the mood to be your cat’s minion/punching bag.

To my feline employer, I’m merely a toady, a gopher, but there’s more to being a successful pet assistant than having opposable thumbs. It’s a multifaceted job requiring a diverse skill set, dagnabbit, and ideal candidates are people with layers — just like the new $21 Large Eye Shadows from the MAC Marilyn Monroe collection.

Blueish gray Showgirl and soft white How to Marry, two of the four shades in the limited edition launch that arrives on counters this Thursday, might look like standard issue shimmers in swatches, but wait until they get on your lids.

Like Marilyn, these Large Eye Shadows are larger than life! Each of the $21 0.1-ounce pans contain twice as much product as MAC’s regular $15 eyeshadow pans, which contain 0.05 ounces each.

Thing is, these babies love buffing, so start by pressing either one on your lids with a firm, flat eyeshadow brush or finger (side note: this part’s kind of important, because I’ve noticed that if I skip the firm brush/finger part, these shadows exhibit significant fallout), and then swirl a domed, fluffy brush like the MAC 217 on top of the shadows to lift away some of the pigment.

What remains is a semi-opaque wash of shiny color and tiny glimmering flecks of shimmer. Although the effect’s kinda quiet in these pics, I think it’s much more obvious and super pretty in person, especially if you like your glitter on the understated side.

These are eyeshadows that scream, “Hey, world! I’m more than just a glorified gravy opener!” and whisper, “Yes…glitter can be quiet and classy.” If you love eye looks that softly shimmer, spend some time with either of these two shades.

PRICE: $21 each
AVAILABILITY: Coming to MAC counters and stores October 4 (that’s this Thursday!)

Loopy for Looper!

Fellow sci-fi fans, if you haven’t seen Looper yet, see it! — because I LOVED IT, all caps and bold with extra exclamation marks!!

It stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (I try to actively block out the fact that he’s the same age as my younger brother whenever I start to drool over him) and the lovely Emily Blunt.

Without revealing too much of the story…it’s the year 2074, and the technology for time travel exists, but its use is strictly forbidden.

The only people who use it are mobsters, and they use it solely to send their victims 30 years into the past to be killed by hired guns called loopers (apparently, getting rid of bodies in the future is a real pain in the @ss).

Joseph and Bruce play the same character, a looper named Joe, from different eras. Joseph plays Joe circa 2044, and Bruce plays the older Joe from 2074. When loopers are “retired” by their mobster employers, they’re sent back in time to be killed by their younger selves, a process called “closing your loop.” Mayhem ensues when a looper either fails to close his own loop, or chooses not to.

I know it sounds a little confusing, a la Inception, but it’s actually a pretty tight story. And once it grabbed hold of me, it didn’t let go!

I was on the edge of my seat from beginning to end, and it kept me guessing the entire time. There were at least two times during the movie when I felt like jumping up from my seat in the theater and yelling, “TWIST!” LOL!

I actually think I’m gonna try to drag El Hub to see it with me a second time because I liked it that much!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Not that these shadows aren’t fantastic because I have them both and LOVE them. But my goodness. LOOPER. What was that fantastic-ness of a movie? I’m about to drag my own boyfriend to go watch it because I am 100% he will love it. It’s a movie that could have been all kinds of mind-numbing but it was excellent! Pure excellence. Can you tell I loved it? Haha, so glad you saw it 🙂

YES! It was excellent. I may have to add it to my list of top 10 sci-fi flicks after I watch it again. Didn’t it feel like the writer/director loved The Terminator movie? I kind of got that sense.

Haha, you cracked me up with that line “Hey, world! I’m more than just a glorified gravy opener!” 😛 Love your sense of humour, Karen!

These shadows are just not really what I imagine Marily was wearing… maybe I’m wrong!
Did you see the season premiere of Dexter?? I’m watching it tonight!

I’ve never watched that show! I have a friend who loves it and keeps telling me that I’m missing out.

The blue is very pretty on you, but I think the shadows and most of the items from this collection will be a pass for me. I am going for one or both of the blushes though–can’t wait to swatch them at the counters!

Oh, and I’m so glad you liked that movie! I have been waiting months for it to come out so I can’t wait to see it!

I saw Looper on Friday night and liked it a lot, too. I’m oddly put off by Joseph G-L (always have been), but still enjoyed the movie. 🙂

I’m off for Seattle tomorrow. Wish me luck at my Sephora store checks!

Good luck! My rule is if I can’t carry it out with my hands then it’s not coming home with me. Otherwise I just keep filling up my little basket!

Skipped the blushes, and got 2 eyeshadows instead – Showgirl (of course, its gray) and Preferred Blonde.

Im thinking PB on the lids w/ the tiniest bit of Showgirl on the crease would be pretty!

Yeah, Preferred Blonde was the one I had my eye on…will try to snag it when it hits counters.

You know what might be cute with your eye look? Some liquid liner along the upper lash line!

Ive been playing around w/ liquid liner – I got an el cheapo (but good!) Jordana felt tip liner and im trying it on. I think im getting the hang of it.

My current liner obsessiong though is UD Perversion, applied really close to the upper lash line and then set w/ some Carbon using a MAC 231 brush. I wing it out ever so slightly and it makes me look awake! 🙂

The blue/grey one looks amazing on you! I stink at applying shadow but I’m going to try to follow your instructions above. I have similar Stila colors!~ 🙂
