Let Lippmann Take You Back to the 80s with Spring Collection 2009

January 30th, 2009 by Karen 26 Comments

Hey, pretty young thing, do you think you can stand the purple rain?

Flash back to the ’80s with Lippmann’s two new spring 2009 nail polish shades. Available next month, both colors pay homage to two of the biggest song hits of the decade, Prince’s Purple Rain and Michael Jackson’s P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing).

Purple Rain ($15) gives props to Prince, aka the strange little man who made wearing ruffles and high heels hot. It’s a frosty light violet that reminds me of something from the Wet n’ Wild nail polish line circa 1986, and it’s so dead-on ’80s that I want to pull on some black jelly bracelets and ride around the neighborhood on my banana seat bike!

I love Prince and purple, but I’m not totally sold on Purple Rain. Help me out. What do you think? Does it look a little too pale and frosty on my nails? I keep seeing images of Dame Edna’s purple coif.

Lippmann teamed up with designer Zac Posen to create Purple Rain for his Spring 2009 runway show at Mercedes-Benz fashion week in New York, coming up with the name and helping to develop the color.

I might try layering it over a darker color to deepen the shade.

If you’re of a lighter skin tone than I am and like the way you look in pastels, Purple Rain could look really great on you. Lippmann polishes always deliver when it comes to durability, and that’s also the case here. Making and Beauty Blog Rating: B-

P.Y.T. = one of my favorite Michael Jackson songs of all time! “Pretty young things, repeat after me, say nah nah nah!” So you know I had to bump that jam when I painted my nails with the second shade in Lippmann’s spring release, P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing) ($15).

In the bottle, P.Y.T. looks like a creamy coral dream come true. On my nails, however, it looks uber-sheer, almost transparent, with just the faintest whisper of coral. I think it’s still lovely, but I found myself wanting more. In the pic above I’m wearing two layers.

The color streaks a bit, so next time I rock it I think I’ll layer it above a base coat.

Base coats work like primers for nails, filling in ridges and providing a smooth surface for color to adhere. They’re also an easy way to extend the life of a manicure. I like Lippmann’s Ridge Filler Base Coat ($16), which was recommended to me by my friend Aimee, a manicurist at one of Lippmann’s Nail Studios.

I think I’ll wear P.Y.T. on my fingers when I’m in the mood for something subtle. Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: B+

Britney tribute on America’s Best Dance Crew: HAWT DAYM!

Did you catch America’s Best Dance Crew last night? Wasn’t it one of the best episodes ever!? The crews had to dance to songs by one of my favorite pop tartlets, Britney Spears, and two groups ripped the competition to shreds!

I was climbing the walls after the Beat Freaks performed Womanizer! LOVED the Britney-inspired choreography, and I thought the group showed they could dance sexy and not just tough and hard-hitting.

Quest Crew also turned in an amazing performance, didn’t they? I was blown away by the blindfolded sequence. Doing back flips blindfolded? Are you kidding me?

LOL… seriously, I’d love to see that show live.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

FYI PYT looks awesome over a ridge filler – I did 3 coats of PYT over China Glaze’s Ridge Filling Basecoat for my swatches and it looks almost perfectly opaque.

Yeah I am not sold on either of these two. I’m not a fan of either frost or sheer so these didn’t work for me. Boooo, but I guess you can’t win ’em all!

Lovin’ the purple, hatin’ the frost! And yeah, it drives me nuts when a beautiful color in the bottle is super-sheer! I had that same experience with the pink polish in Lancome’s spring line. I want color and coverage, baby!

Yeah, I don’t think Michael Jackson could put out a song called “Pretty Young Thing” anymore!! ROTFL! Not with the lawsuits!

I am loving that purple frost though!! YUM!

Ah, the 80’s! I loved Prince and his music “back in the day” Hee Hee! But as far as the Purple Rain nail color, I agree that it’s a bit too pale and frosty for you. I wonder if it would have been better if they had made it a creamy matte color…Hmmm. PYT is nice and subtle if you want a really sheer look (which I prefer on my very short nails!)

    Have a great weekend!

Hmm..Purple Rain reminds me of a prom dress or my grandmother. I could totally see her rocking a purple pants suit and then deciding she needed purple nail polish to match, haha. That was very random. I really like the coral color in the bottle, but I completely agree, waaay too sheer for my liking.

Karen, you hugged my SOUL with this post! I love 80s MJ!

Eh, I’m not too crazy about either of these colors. When I think 80s songs I think bold brights. For example, there should be one called “Bad Mamma Jamma” and it should be bright fire-engine/coral red? LOL

    Whaddya think?

    Hi P. Potter,

    Right?!?

I’ve listened to it about 20 times today. I also watched the director’s cut video a few times. (obsessed with Britney much?). I’m wanting to do a few of her makeup looks, LOL.

Hope you have a nice weekend!

    Hi Glosslizard,

Yah! And I want no streaking… and no chipping either!

While I’m at I’d also like a pony and for Trader Joe’s to make the dark chocolate stars permanent so I can eat them on my birthday in June!

    Hi Karen4,

That would’ve been so awesome if it were creamy! I guess I’ll just have to keep my fingers crossed and hope that comes true someday.

Did you ever watch the movie Purple Rain? I saw it at my friend’s slumber party… I was like, eight. I dunno what her parents were thinking, LOL!

    Hi Lucky,

Oh, girl. I can’t tell you how many times my little elementary school self rocked out to Thriller. My BFF still has it… on VINYL.

Good call with the Bad Mamma Jamma color! For your 80’s inspired line I’d like to add an obnoxious, frosty gold. I’d call it either “Hammer Pants” or “Can’t Touch This.”

I think Purple Rain looks neat. I love doing looks with a little bit of 80’s style in them, and I’d choose this over Hammer pants any day!

i also remember Mike Jackson when he was black, too =)

i think the purple rain is too frosty and in a not so good way but that’s just me – i got my toes done today and i did essie’s ‘sexy divide’ my toes look like eggplants in the dark but bright grape jelly in the sun – it’s my new fave color! i should have bought this color over ‘damsel in a dress’…

I love the Purple Rain polish. I played that album to death and went to see Purple Rain at the movies. I just loved it! Don’t care for the other polish. Way to sheer. I thought it would be a creme, glad I saw it on your nails first. Love your writing style.
