The New Laura Mercier Stone Grey Eye Pencil Puts the Smackdown on Bold Blues With Something Work-Friendly and Wearable

January 8th, 2013 by Karen 37 Comments

Laura Mercier Stone Grey Eye Pencil
Wearing Laura Mercier’s new Stone Grey Eye Pencil ($20) from the Arabesque Spring 2013 collection along my lower lash and water lines

I’m having a very hard time not referring to Laura Mercier’s new $20 Stone Grey Eye Pencil (from the Arabesque Spring 2013 collection) as, “Stone Cold Grey.”

And it’s all this man’s fault: Stone Cold Steve Austin.

I watched a lot of pro wrestling with my younger brother when he was kid, and back then Stone Cold Steve Austin was, like, a big, big deal.

For the record, it was usually my brother’s idea. I’d walk into the room while he was glued to the TV, his eyes wide with excitement, and ask, “Why are you watching that? You know it’s all fake, right?”

“Shut up, it’s real!” he’d reply, only taking his eyes off the action for a second.

Now, all these years later, I know how he must have felt, because the same thing happens to me when I’m watching The Hills…

Okay, tangent! Back to Laura’s Stone Grey. 🙂

One of two pencils in the Arabesque collection, this rich, pigmented cool-toned grayish blue, a limited edition piece (the other Arabesque pencil, Midnight Bleu, hails from the permanent collection), has a matte finish — almost like Stormy Grey liner’s shy cousin.

I think it looks lovely layered beneath Blue Zen eyeshadow — the one from the Free Spirit Palette — or by itself along lower lash and water lines.

If you’ve been wanting to test the waters with a blue liner but haven’t felt like diving into the deep end with a shockingly bright electric blue, this is the pencil for you. The grey really tones it down, keeping it quiet and soft.

It’s the kind of thing you could wear to work without your co-workers saying, “Ohmigod! Are you wearing blue eyeliner today!?” between TPS reports.

On my lash and water lines, it lasts from 5-6 hours, with minimal fading around the 4-hour mark, but touchups are easy, thanks to a soft, smooth texture.

Stone Grey is a pretty sexy shade for an eye liner.

Love it! I love grey liners and I love the blue undertone to this. Does it make the whites of your eyes look whiter like navy can?

That is such a great color! I need to get more neutrals in my eyeliner stash anyway. It looks like the perfect liner to switch up a work look.

I asked for bright eyeliners for Christmas and hoo boy do I have a lot. Like a crayon box, but eyeliners instead.

I had to smile reading about your wrestling fan brother- such a familiar conversation. I have to wonder if my own kid brother’s obsession with wrestling was a result of being pushed around by his big sis-I hope not! Anyway thanks for swatching this! I have been on a search for the perfect blue grey liner(current: Clinique Quickliner in Slate) and this very well could be it! Just got the LM kohl set and am loving the LM liners. Stormy grey is my go-to. So if I am in a lighter mood, I can switch it up with Stone “Cold” Grey. 🙂 too many shoes or handbags? maybe. too many eyeliners? never!

      Hi Lorraine,

I’m glad you’ve got Stormy Grey in your life. That’s one of my go-to colors!

RE: brothers and professional wrestling. So…kinda funny. One year for Christmas my brother got me an NWO sweatshirt. I actually used to wear it all the time, too, because it was warm.

I couldn’t wait to read this post after your status on Facebook 🙂 The liner looks amazing on you. Laura Mercier’s liners are great. I got Black Navy along with a full sized Stormy Grey the other day and that’s a pretty blue, too. With the professional fighting, with what I know, I’d say some of it is real (in MMA you are literally supposed to knock out your opponent and you can get lots of broken bones in that sport) and some of it is for show (some of the boxing can be, I guess). I thought The Hills was a decent show. It certainly kept me entertained enough to watch all of the seasons!

I think it’s SO COOL that you’re taking MMA classes. Are you enjoying it? It looks like a really great workout.

I haven’t been yet but I’ve been doing my research on gyms. I finally found a good gym (recommended to me by one of my fellow ER people, an ER doc who actually competes in MMA). I can’t wait to get started! This is an interesting fact but yoga supplements martial arts…and I heard a rumor that the NFL is actually doing yoga in their training now. So cool! How have you been?

I’d believe that rumor. When I was taking dance classes there were football players in my ballet class, believe it or not! They were better than I was at it, haha.

I’m really good, thank you for asking. Things on this end have been great! I feel like the new year gave me a reset and a new start. Are you feeling better? I know you were sick around NYE.

    Hi Karen!
I love your blog very, very much.
Though they are divine, Laura Mercier liners are a major splurge for me. Can you think of any decent drugstore dupes for this color?
I have the Black Ebony cake Laura Mercier liner (though it is worn down to crumbs), which i will sometimes mix with whatever matte white shadow I have kicking around, for a good grey. I suppose I could mix a little navy into the mix for a pretty slate hue.
I find a lot of grey/blue liners too sheer, but this one looks just about right!

And I haven’t been a big fan of Laura’s baked eyeshadows, but this one may make a believer out of me. lol! Thanks for feeding the addiction, Miss Karen! 😉
