Be Betty AND Veronica With MAC Archie’s Girls: The MAC Archie’s Girls Collection for Spring 2013

January 23rd, 2013 by Karen 246 Comments

MAC Archie's Girls

MAC has always been good at collections that tell a story, and sometimes the story’s a little hazy, and sometimes the story’s really clear. With the MAC Archie’s Girls collection (coming Jan. 30 to cyberspace, to stores and counters February 7, and internationally this March), it’s almost like you’re reading an Archie comic, but instead of flipping through the pages and reading the words, you’re seeing the story within the products. You get the sense of who these two girls are, Betty and Veronica, and how they relate to each other.

MAC divided the collection into two parts (chapters?) with very distinct packaging. There are 16 Betty products, 16 Veronica products and five accessories — brushes, bags, a mirror. That kind of thing. The Veronica products have Veronica’s face on them, and the Betty products have Betty’s.

Blonde babe Betty gets colors you might wear with a spring dress and a ribbon in your ponytail. Corals, sweet peaches, lavender, gold, brown and green.

MAC Archie's Girls

Veronica’s colors? Like the exclamation marks on the collection! Royal purples, Corvette reds and a fuchsia you might see in a kiss on a really naughty album cover. These are colors you’d wear with your man-eater outfit.

But what I think is super, super cool is how the sub-collections reflect Betty’s and Veronica’s distinct personalities. They’re rivals vying for Archie’s affections, but at the same time, these two girls get along! In fact, they’re BFFs. If Betty borrowed a sweater from Veronica and wore it to school the next day, she’d still be Betty, walking down the hallway with her books in the crook of her arm, but she’d have some of Veronica’s swagger, thanks to the sweater.

Much like wearing the Betty cheek and lip products from Archie’s Girls with Veronica’s eye products. In essence, you can be the best of both girls, and play up the different sides of your personality. You don’t have to choose one or the other (unlike poor Archie).

MAC Archie's Girls

So, who is Archie’s Girl Betty? Well, she’s the girl next door who slips on Converse high tops, skinny jeans and a tank top for a blind date. She’s very girly and sweet, like someone who sends thank you notes and feeds the stray cats that show up on her porch at night.

As for Veronica, she’ll spend an entire day at the mall looking for a specific shade of black shoe to go with the dress she plans to wear to an invite-only club. When she’s walking down the street and another girl walks by, Veronica knows if the girl’s bag is a knockoff or real. She’s the girl whose closet you envy and the one who’ll always listen to your boy problems before offering to take you to the mall to cheer you up.

I plan to play with these products and post some reviews over the next few days, but right away, I think MAC succeeded with the release by giving two different points of view.

MAC Archie's Girls

On the Veronica side? — super saturated, rich colors, whereas MAC played with sheerer shades on the Betty side, which of course some gals will grumble about, but I think sheers can also be cool.

The quality is there. For me, the Veronica lip products stand out. The bold colors, the pigments — MAC traditionalists may really like these.

And then there are the Pearlmatte Face Powders… LOVE THEM! Just so we’re clear, when I’m running away from the zombies, you’ll find me clutching one of these in my palm (instead of a machete). A girl needs her highlighters, even in the apocalypse.

The Pearlmatte’s also have the added bonus of a built-in blush. See the hearts in each of the pans down below? They’re actually MAC Blushes, and they’re surrounded by MAC Beauty Powders.

As for the eye palettes, I’ve noticed this trend with MAC Eye Shadows over the past couple of years where when you put your finger in some of the pans to swatch the shadows, they feel very hard. I don’t know why, but these seem a little softer to me.

Without further ado, let’s get on with it, shall we? Come meet Archie’s Girls. 🙂

I freaking love it! I originally had zero interest in it since it seemed like a strange collaboration, but I started looking into it once I realized it was going to be the big spring collection. I’ve been trying to find information on it for awhile now, and you answered my prayers! I’m definitely checking this out and making a list. Your blog is SUCH a big help, so thank you so much!

MAC seems to find ways to make offbeat collaborations work, don’t they? 🙂 You know what really surprised me? The Betty palette! Not sure if you’re a brown eyeshadow kinda girl, but the lighter tan, Caramel Sundae, could easily be a workhorse shade. What’s your makeup style? Are you more into bold colors?

My makeup style = whatever I can make work. I love bold colors and neutrals depending on what I’m in the mood for. I’ve been wanting to see that Betty palette for awhile since it seemed like it would make a gorgeous neutral eye that isn’t just brown/bronze based. You totally sold me on it. The Veronica palette looks awesome, too. Do you like all those purples together?

The Betty palette is gonna be a sleeper hit, I think. I didn’t think I could work it, but it turned out to be really wearable. And you’re right, it’s nice to have a neutral palette that isn’t a straight-up Naked dupe.

So, the Veronica palette. It’s A LOT of purple. Of course you don’t have to put it all on at once (I did for this look just to see if I could get away with it). I’d probably mix it in with something like Caramel Sundae or Soba to keep it balanced in real life. But if you want a really bold, really purple eye, shoot, GO FOR IT! 🙂

The Pearlglides are great if you like rich, dark liners for the lash lines. Are you looking for something that you can wear on the water lines as well? Because you can’t really do that with these because of the glitter. If you need a water line rec lemme know…

Karen, you did an awesome job with this. I’m on the Veronica side for the lippies, particularly Feelin’ So Good and Boyfriend Stealer.

Also, I’ve been meaning to tell you that it’s warmed up to -5. When I got up yesterday, the thermometer read -20. One of the boys said, “well, zero is 36 degrees, so it’s not THAT bad”. I explained that 32 degrees F was 0 C, but that I’m talking 20 below zero F. So, 52 degrees under freezing. Even he (who’s lived his whole life here) looked horrified. HAHA! I hope that makes you feel warmer. 🙂

      Hi Kim,

Great choices — the Lipglass and Lipstick would look GREAT together.

So, I can’t even begin to comprehend the intensity of being that cold. I saw something on the news yesterday where they had a reporter from East Coast throw a cup of water into the air, and it like, instantly turned into snow. Then they showed him taking a frozen banana and using it as a hammer. LOL! I might have to put on a tank top and shorts right now… Okay, maybe not. 🙂

The upside is that it’s supposed to be in the 40s next week. That’s the thing about the Northeast; the weather keeps us on our toes! 🙂

You have the best site in the completely saturated beauty blog market 🙂 I was thinking I’d pick up a few things from this launch, but now that I see the swatches I know I’m going to splurge. Betty’s my girl 😉 THANKS for all that you do. You’re an amazing writer and your creativity is so inspiring!

Thanks so much for this post! So well-done 🙂

OMG I am SO glad I read about this collection on your blog first! I am LOL with all the tongue in cheek craziness and esp the Archie avatar of you and tabs on your banner! Only you would be brave enough to don wigs and cartoon yourself out for our amusement. I have to say, the feminist in me cringes when companies promote cosmetics with a juvenile or cartoon theme(hello kitty and betty boop, I am looking at you!) or with dueling archetypes like GLinda and theodora or Betty and Veronica. I have to wonder since none of the Mac loving youngsters have probably heard of Archie comics, if they are aiming at the wallets of gen X. Anyway, feminist politics definitely color my opinion of collections like this, so I am glad you could help me look on the lighter side! Fantastic post!

I may be the only one that isnt truly impressed, judging from other pictures I’ve seen of the lipstick tubes I expected them to be bolder (well Veronica’s line)….Daddy’s little girl reminds me a little of “up the amp” judging from the swatches….I do like ronnie red and bright betty though just not super impressed :/. Thank you very much for the post though the color story was long over due and you saved me money 🙂

Luv this! It seems like Mac and UB are on the same wavelength regarding dueling personalities! I must say I will probably buying bits and pieces from both collections. This is why I love cosmetics and the freedom to choose to put on cosmetics. I can be Betty one day, then be Veronica the next, or be a bit of both!

Oh wow. I hadn’t expected to get much from this collection, especially from the Betty side, but there’s SO much that I want. While I love the ice cream colours of the Betty palette, I think I’ll mainly be concentrating my limited budget (sigh) on the face and lip products: the lipsticks in Daddy’s Little Girl, Betty Bright, and Ronnie Red; the lipgloss in Strawberry Malt; and both of the blushes and beauty powders. Oh dear, that’s a massively long list as it is! MAC is clearly trying to bankrupt me this spring. I was just about prepared for the Strength lipsticks (which are released here at the beginning of next month), but now they come along with this collection AND Shell Pearl beauty powder in the Year of the Snake collection… I guess I’ll be living on baked beans until the summer, then. 😉

    Thanks for the great pics.

I was thinking on Bright Betty but I’m afraid it might be too similar to Watch Me Simmer, another bright coral shade. What do you think?? If it’s too close I’m gonna have to change it 🙁

Your creativity and layout and overall fun with this post actually made me want the products more than the actual products themselves. Putting yourself in the comics – pure genius! True advertising at its best since the whole point is to make us want to see ourselves in that light. And I don’t mean that in a negative way, you should be in advertising. Absolutely fabulous. So excited for this collection. Thank you Karen for the swatches! I’m definitely picking up Daddy’s Girl and Ronnie Red, and probably Prom Princess blush. I’m definitely a Veronica.

    Hi Karen!

I love your blog! Thank you for showing all of the swatches it has really helped me narrow down what I want to get 🙂 I am a split between Betty and Veronica (too many beautiful colors!) Do you know what time they are going to launch on the website January 30th?

    Thank you!

Hi Karen! I’m thinking of picking up a Pearlmatte Powder but I don’t know which one would suit me better. I have NC20 skin. Any suggestions?

Hi Karen! OMG! I cannot wait to get a hold of Veronica lippies! Quick question though.. Is the brush set worth it? I never had MAC brushes and I wanted to be sure cuz it’s a bit pricey. 🙂 Thank you! Love your site btw! GO GIRRL!

The new Maybelline Vivid lipstick in “hot plum” looks VERY similar to the Veronica lipstick in “daddy’s little girl”, which is now sold out on the website.

I’m so excited to get this collection! I ordered practically everything on the Betty side. I’ll always be a Betty! But could they have gotten a creepier looking Archie?? ewww

What do you think of the brush kit? I was going to buy a 168 but the counter was out. If the set is as good as the full size, this is a better deal! I’ve heard sets aren’t as good as the single brushes though…

Thanks for this post! So helpful, you don’t even realize!
If you had to choose between the two (Boyfriend Stealer lipstick and Feelin’ So Good lip glass), which one would you choose and why?
I’m sure they would look so good together, but I’m afraid I can only get one or the other.
    Thanks so much! xoxo

Hi Karen! I don’t comment very often, but this is an incredible post – I love your creativity with the wigs, comic strips, and photographing products on the comic book pages! Plus, this is just such a fun collaboration. My cousin and I went down to MAC right after school today to check it out and LOVED it! I ended up getting 2 lipsticks in Betty Bright and Daddy’s Little Girl. So I guess I’m a Betty and a Veronica! The lipsticks are gorgeous – I originaly wasn’t even going to get Daddy’s Little Girl but it looked so pretty on that I couldn’t resist! Thank you so much for your photos, swatches, and creativity!

    Hi! Lovely Pictures, very creative!
    Are the brushes good?
Did you like the nail polishes? I really want to get Pep Pep Pep but not if the formula sucks! Also, have you found any dupes for them?
Sorry for the million questions ! (:

I super loved Daddy’s little Girl and ronnie’s blush:)

Karen, this is the best of the best post you’ve made on a new MAC Collection! I believe MAC really went out of their way to create this new Spring Collection because I haven’t seen anything with Archie on it for over 20 years. I’m a true Veronica Fan but I’m digging Betty this time around.
