A Makeup and Beauty Blog giveaway
Win a $50 eGift card from Sephora

Rise and shine? Confused today am I. Talking like Yoda I am. Kind of out of it this morning I feel.

LOL! I made myself laugh… 🙂

What a busy week! Today I just want to chill out, unwind, relax, watch some brainless television, catch up on my magazines, and maybe go see that new Guillermo del Toro movie, Mama.

I love del Toro’s style. He’s one of my favorite storytellers, and dang! — that guy knows how to make some scary-@ss monsters (have you seen the trailer for this?).

Pan’s Labyrinth? A classic!

In other news, well, I have no other news. Tabs is off sleeping somewhere… I don’t see him here in the living room, so I guess he’s somewhere upstairs, probably at the spa, also known as the bathroom sink. I’m just chillin’ on the couch with my laptop.

Good luck in this weekend’s Sephora eCard giveaway. Details to enter are down below.

Talk to you soon.

What folks are saying…

“Hi Karen!!! Wow, that news definitely gets a hoo ray ray and an elephant!!! (I’ve maybe been watching too much Boardwalk Empire.) Thank you so much!!!”
-Shana

“What a lovely surprise it was to see your announcement (after completing one of many exams/papers/projects I have this crazy week)! The eCard will definitely ease expenses for this broke, beauty-obsessed college student. Thank you, Karen and Tabs!!”
-Katie

“Thanks so much, Karen. Just in case you were wondering what I got with it, I decided to go with the Clarisonic Mia–I’ve been wanting it for years now, but have never purchased it because of the price. Your eCard helped me finally buy it! I look forward to using it. Thanks again!”
-Jane

“Shut the front door! OMG Karen, you have made my day. 🙂 I’m sick in bed with the flu and this has just cheered me up immensely!!!!!!!! BTW, I’m the one that sent you that pic of my pug in a wig a few weeks back LOL! Thanks again, honestly, I’m beyond giddy right now.”
-Angel

“Thank you SO much Karen! OMG! Wishes really do come true! I can’t believe I won! You have no idea how much this will help me through the holidays. I’ve been an avid fan of your blog for the past two years. Your witty and creative entries, informative makeup information, and beautiful photos have kept me hooked. I look forward to more of it. Goodness, you’ve
seriously just made my week and it’s only Tuesday night!”
-Zharlynne

“Oh my goodness! Thank you so much Karen (and Tabs, of course)! I really appreciate this! I’d been eyeing the Anastasia brow pencil in Strawburn to match my red hair!”
-Chelsea (and Jiji the kitten and Quincy the bunny)

favorite comic book, I have my fab by genre so I cant pick one.
    1.Comedy/adventure : Archie, 2.for laughs and Dry humor : Garfield 3 .Action/supernatural : Marvel Avengers.

When I was little 6 years till 10 I used to read Barbie comic books, and for some laughs a Latin American graphic comic magazine called Condorito. and also Disney comic magazines that had duck tales etc
I always was a sucker for comic books.

I don’t buy Garfield comic books anymore I read them online along with US acres.

I decided to give Covergirl’s new outlast stay fabulous 3 in 1 liquid foundation a try, and I actually liked it! I had always thought my real name was Nikki.

But when I was in 4th grade, my mom was going through some important documents and being the nosy kid I was, I decided to snoop around.

I saw a birth certificate for a Dominique Bansil who was born the same day as me! I became excited and thought I had a long lost twin!

My mom laughed and told me that Dominique is my real name, and that Nikki is just a nickname.

I would have rather had a twin.

I just got back from a run to Sephora and MAC and definitely made too big of a dent in my bank. Bought thirteen new brushes, the new NARS powder and Mac’s Up the Amp. And that’s after ordering 13 new Inglot shadows, 3 Inglot blushes plus a twenty shadow palette and a 4 blush one.

I’ve dressed up as Columbia for Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight viewings but I’ve never been to a convention! I live vicariously through a friend who attends east coast conventions. But I just love looking at Comic Con and PAX videos every year to see the amazing things people put together. Or steampunk cosplay! I’m fairly convinced that my daughter will get all the nerd brushed off from my husband and I each Halloween for the rest of our lives. She was Luigi from Mario Bros last year and she made me put on a dress so she could call me Peach for about a week.

I love make up of course but i’m also a bath goodies and candle/tart fanatic.I have even got my son addicted to bath bombs,I’m sure his girl friends later on in life will appreciate that.LOL

The most daring look I created was not this week. It was actually back in August. I am in the military and I was in Djibouti Africa for 6 months. There is nothing really to do there during your off time. Well one bored day i was playing with makeup in 130 degree weather. I know “who does that”? I had about 2 hours before my shift. I wore a green and brown uniform there. So I decided to try and wear and green and brown make up. No big deal normally, but a no no while in uniform. The instructions states must complement the skin tone. To men that means earth tomes.lol So I walk into work and everyone had something to say. I told them that I am a women of color and every color complements my skin ton!! They had nothing else to say..

I just found your blog and I know I will return to it again and again. Your cat is beyond gorgeous!

I’m wondering if you have an email newsletter that I can subscribe to? I didn’t notice one. Anyway, it’s a very attractive blog and I know I’m going to love it.

I may be one of your older readers (67). I can easily spend way more time in Sephora and Ulta than I should. The reason I am interested in make-up (more now than ever before) is because most of my life I just wore very little, and what I did put on was just the usual – nothing too elaborate. Now I am curious about how to maintain, if not a youth glow, then a healthy and well-rested and vibrant appearance – not too much to ask I hope!

So… I just enjoy watching tutorials, learning what’s new, seeing how products might work for me, and experimenting. I am blessed with very good skin (IMHO) so I try to make the most of it. And the clerks at Ulta are getting better about not ignoring their older customers. Seriously, I remember one time about 5-6 yrs ago when I went into Ulta, no one approached me to help or greet me. I thought about it and wondered if they thought I wouldn’t spend much money. But lately – for ex., I was just in Ulta yesterday at the Benefit brow bar – it has been a better experience: welcoming and helpful. As for Sephora, they have always had great customer service. And the department stores are good too – sometimes too good; they can be a little pushy. Enough about that!

So thanks for being there, keep up the good work, and keep those product reviews coming!

I’m only half way through my first prolongwear concealer, but I just can’t bear to be without it. When I first got it I didn’t like it, in fact if just sat in one of my makeup drawers untouched for quite sometime. I decided to try it again a few weeks ago and I love it now. I had oily skin and acne prone skin my whole life but now my skin cleared up and MAT Velvet by MUFE keeps it shine free. Since everything is shine free, Now I want the dewy look!! Oily skin doesn’t give you dewy, it gives you yucky. I wanted shine in all the right places so I purchased Mr. Bright. I would always feel like a movie star wearing the products. One person at the mall asked me if I was a model. Thank you random citizen.

“What was your most daring makeup look this week? What was the last drugstore beauty product you purchased, and how did it work out?”

Two-in-one, my drugstore purchase was Maybelline Eyestudio in Caffeine Rush (as expected from the name, beautiful mocha and cream colors). My most daring makeup look was to layer all five colors in the set and it was beautiful! The color payoff was wonderful–much more pigment and saturation than you usually get with a drugstore brand. A little went a long way! I also made sure to use primer, so the look stayed all day and into the night with no fallout, yay!

The last drugstore beauty item I bought were two Milani Infinite Liquid Eye Liners in Everlast (black) and Forever (a golden bronze). I wanted the light green, but it looks like they don’t make it anymore. In fact, it looks like they may have revamped the liners because all the ones in the display had “NEW” stickers on them, they discontinued a few of the colors, & the constancy looks much thinker than what I’ve seen mentioned online. I was hoping these would be a good cheaper liquid liner to practice with, instead of the UD 24/7 one that came with the last UD Box of Shadows.

DS beauty item: I recently picked up Revlon Photo Ready BB Cream SPF 30. I LOVE IT! Dewy finish, the lightest shade matched me perfectly (I’m usually one up from the lightest shade, but only 3 shades were available.) Lightish/sheer coverage.

The last thing that I have bought from the drugstores was the eyeshadow palette from Wet n Wild in Comfort Zone. The colors are pretty rich, and the price was great (buy one get 50% off). The palette is great to work with, and it is what I like to take on trips since they are so cheap, and easy to replace.

So I recently just bought the Maybellone Dream Smooth Moouse in the shade 240 Natural Beige and I really like it. The only problem is, when I put it on, it looks great, but when I take a picture with it, it looks SO WHITE!!!! It confuses me. I have a really hard time trying to match my skin with the right shade of foundation. And it’s especially hard at a drugstore because you can’t actually try it on. Also, I’ve been trying to contour my face, but I don’t think I’m doing it right. I guess I will just have to watch more YouTube videos, haha.

Is it wrong that I might maybe have 3 Sephora orders enroute already…

I ALMOST made it all of January without ordering…but my birthday is soon so it was time to fail. Then UD released those $!@# Oz palettes so there was orders #1/2. (You have to split them up to get more perks, rights?) And Sephora got the UD Smoked pencils back in stock in their sale section and I was going to get them on UD.com but happy to start building points at Sephora for VIB next year. So that was order #3.

Yeah. 4 orders in 2+ weeks. I. Have. PROBLEMS.

So…I promise I will make NO orders (except that Smashbox one) in February/March. No matter what… UNLESS – I get that $50 gift card. Then all bets are off.

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog

Welcome to Makeup and Beauty Blog! My name is Karen, and I’m a freelance writer obsessed with makeup.

Makeup and Beauty Blog features daily product reviews, makeup tips and beauty news — like an interactive version of a monthly print magazine, except with occasional pictures of my cat.
