It’s Like Kevin Bacon in That Barn Scene From Footloose…

January 30th, 2013 by Karen 124 Comments

There was a method to the madness…

My voice is kinda gravelly this morning. It sounds like I spent the whole night eating Fruity Pebbles without any milk, and a big reason is because I spent part of last night locked in my bathroom yelling into a folded towel.

I know that sounds completely insane! — but hear me out. There was a method to my madness.

I had kind of a bad day yesterday. The morning started off fine, it was cool, lunch was fine, and then somewhere around 1 or 2, things just went off the rails. First, I realized that I accidentally deleted a bunch of pics that I took. Second, I dunno, sometimes I just have really bad writing days. As with anything, some days it’s easy, and some days it’s hard. And yesterday it was hard.

By the end of the day, I was already in tears, but then I read kind of a nasty comment from a stranger criticizing pretty much my entire outlook on blogging, and how I exhibit “too much personality” (seriously?).

That pushed me over the edge… I lost my sh*t and started thinking of prison fights and the word, “shank,” as in, “to shank someone.”

LOL! I’m obviously not really going to shank anyone, but I’m just sayin’ — the word occurred to me. 🙂

I’d come unhinged, but I didn’t want to worry El Hub or cry the night away. I just needed a way to vent my feelings.

So, I grabbed my stopwatch, set it for 10 minutes, locked myself in the bathroom and told myself that I could blow my top! — and at the end of the 10 minutes, I would let it go, put it behind me, stop crying, and move on.

In the bathroom, I folded a towel, buried my face in it and cried and yelled and cursed!!

It was very much like that scene from Footloose when Kevin Bacon/Ren is doing gymnastics in the barn and roaring at the universe (“You don’t know me!!”), except much less cardiovascular.

And you know what? It worked. The funny thing is, I yelled myself out after 5 minutes. I didn’t even yell the full 10. I guess just giving myself permission to fall apart went a long way toward helping me feel better.

A good night’s sleep with your favorite stuffed animal and your cat can also help…

And if yelling into a towel doesn’t sound like your thing, you could always try writing your feelings down, typing them into a computer, dictating them into your iPhone or voice recorder, and then tearing them up or deleting the files. For me, I think it does help to get rid of it, though, whatever it is, and let it go.

I think we’re always trying to keep our composure in front of our friends and family, you know? Be strong for everyone else. But it sure can be a relief to just go apesh*t from time to time. LOL!

Anywho, just one of the little coping mechanisms I use sometimes and wanted to share. Hope things are going well on your end of the keyboard. Talk to you soon.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Glad you’re feeling better! And if it helps, I was talking about your blog with my friend and we agreed it’s your personality (and Tabs) that keeps us coming back. I have blogs I like because they’re straight up informative reviews, but seriously who else puts themselves into an entire Archie comic montage? It’s genius if you ask me (and I always assume people want to know my opinion, lol)

Hi Karen! I’m so sorry you had a bad day yesterday but I’m glad you’re in a better mood today. That stranger must have no personality to say that your blog exudes too much of it. I mean if you didn’t include your personality this would be one boring blog! I think your personality is fantastic and I enjoy coming to your blog daily to see what great and funny things you have to say.

Hands down, one of the reasons I love your blog over all others (aside from the fact that we live a stones throw away from each other) is your personal approach to makeup. You write in an openhearted and approachable manner which makes your blog a “must read” in my book. Do not change because of one “trolls” perspective, do what works for you and screw everyone else.

Long time reader… sometimes commenter.. 🙂

So sorry to hear you had a bad day yesterday! I look at your blog every day and love it. Yours is one of the two I look at frequently. One of the reasons is because I love your style and you make it so much fun! I really enjoy your personality and flare that you add to your reviews. It’s pretty awesome!!!

Hope you have a fantastic day today!

I agree with the previous comments- the fact that your original, witty and loveable personality shows through is one of the big reasons I love your blog. I’d be surprised if this stranger had done anything as accomplished as this blog, so I say put up or shut up. There is no rule about how to write a blog- it’s a very personal thing and one of the great aspects of this is the fact that there is a great variety of styles available.

Yesterday I cried mid-downward dog on my yoga mat! I was doing a Jillian video (new to me) and just couldn’t get it. So I stopped, got into downward dog, stared at the floor, and cried. Then I got up, scanned the DVD back and tried again. Kudos for finding a way to let it out that worked for you 🙂 I get how you don’t want to worry your husband or spend all night dwelling on it. For the record, your blog rocks as everyone who comments on this post will attest. We keep reading because your injection of “personality” is just one component of a damn fine piece of art. I love your writing, Karen, and I read your blog precisely *for* your personality. You seem like such a smart, warm, funny person, and this comes through in your writing… what’s not to like! After all, it’s easy to find reviews of new products online, but what keeps me coming back to your site is your voice, and the care you take with your writing (and, okay, not gonna lie, the gratuitous Tabs pics).

Karen, everyone has better and worse days, it’s normal and it’s ok to melt sometimes but as far as that comment someone made about your blog, you shouldn’t care. I know it was hurtful but then read all those comments that your readers leave you and how much we all appreciate what you do. I think the main reason why you’re my favorite blogger is because you are like no one else, you don’t just write about make up, you share personal, creative, funny stories and that’s what makes you so unique and lovable! I hope today you’re feeling better. Sending a lot of positive thoughts and hugs your way!

People are rude! Just let it roll off your back. Your personality helps people relate to you and makes your site standout among a sea of blogs – besides, if people want the bare bone facts without opinions or personality, websites offer cut-and-dry descriptions of their products. Keep up the good work and don’t let the haters bring you down 🙂

I hate to say this, but sounds like the hater may be jealous of your success. Your wit, your talent at design and photoshop funny, your light-hearted approach to a sometimes-takes-itself-way-too-seriously beauty industry that sums up the “personality” this hater refers to. and I would like to call it your Talent. your writing and editing Skills- which would be the envy of many a magazine editor, By the Way(I am 100% sure you have your pick of offers but choose to be your own boss-i mean, work for Tabs instead- KUDos to you!). “Personality” is a bit condencending, if you ask me-the success of your blog is due to SO much more than that! Don’t let the haters get you down. There are always going to be jerks who want to tell you that you shouldn’t take your job seriously- I am a Stay-home parent for the past several years, so I have heard it all. Listen to your heart, not the ignorant, jealous mean girls or guys. We love your blog!!!! please don’t change a thing!

Personally, I can’t wait until I get me a whole lotta haters and then I can say I really made it! :0 Seriously though, if that critism held true, you would not be the top beauty blog on the internet. It takes a LOT of courage to put yourself out there in any form, but especially in a blog form. Please focus on all of the people who appreciate what you do, in the exact way you do it, rather than on this one person who radiates ugliness from the inside out. Keep doing you, girl. I can also attest that yelling gets it out. I was ready to hose my neighbors dog’s because of hours of non stop barking. Instead I stood on something and yelled at them while they barked at me. Just wanted to continue the stream of positive feedback you’re getting!

Sometimes there are indeed bad days — but don’t ever listen to strangers who hate 🙂 It’s just ALWAYS bad news.

I regularly come to your blog (okay, daily) and while I am a confessed beauty addict and a dog lady, only your blog makes me actually laugh out loud (nod to Tabs). Also, you’re always so positive and personal that it often feels like I’m checking into the blog of a friend. Anyway, kudos to you lady for raising the beauty blogging bar (and as an aside to that mean stranger: HELLO?! beauty is more than just makeup)

I love your idea of screaming into a towel with a set timer — I’m definitely going to try that one during one of my bad days. Adding to this, I suggest after going apes**t cooking something for yourself or buying one thing to continue making yourself feel better! Because if we can’t make ourselves feel better, no one can. Rock on, woman.

“….except much less cardiovascular” LOL! That’s gonna to be my new credo.
Too much personality? Wha…..?!!? I read an article on blogging and dealing with nasty commenters (among other things). The article was on xojane.com and was written by Lisa Lampinelli. If you don’t know her she’s a comedienne dubbed the “queen of mean” (http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/lisa-lampanelli-drops-the-persona-and-for-the-first-time-gets-really-real-about-internet-commenters). Really raunchy but very funny. I’d have thought that she’d have skin like elephant hide but she says that she never reads comments about her writing or her shows because if it’s good she’ll get a big ego and she’s not going to change the way she writes or does comedy over a few negative comments. Philosophically I know there’s a difference between someone’s stage and “real” personas, but I was surprised to see that someone like her gets a bit down from the opinions of others.
I’m glad the towel-in-the-bathroom worked for you! And remember that it doesn’t take a very big set of brass ones to write trash about other people on the interwebz. Under the cloak of anonymity everyone’s a gd critic!

I’ve never understood comments like that on blogs. If you don’t like something just don’t read it. How hard is that? As many others have said your personality is part of why I read your blog. If I was only looking for factual reviews I would probably stick more to blogs where the swatches are on a skintone similar to my own casper-like one:)

Please don’t let some dipshit douche cause you to doubt yourself; the internet is a perfect venue for hateful people to put down others without reprisal. Karen, you are so incredibly awesome. I really hate that some joyless harpy contributed to your bad day. You don’t deserve that kind of garbage, and maybe if that person is so averse to kickass, fun personalities, he or she can GTFO instead of hanging around and trying to tear others down. That’s my two cents!

Anyway, I know we’ve never met, so I figure it’s probably weird to say it, but I totally love you and wish we could be best friends! Anybody can snap a picture or two of a lipstick and write a few dry words about texture/quality/whatever, but it takes someone pretty darn special to do what you do. Every time I read one of your posts, whether it’s about makeup or cutie-pie Tabs or anything at all, I feel like I’m going on a big, glamorous adventure with my best girlfriend, the kind I know is going to make my face hurt from laughing and smiling too much. You make everything so fun and I just love you so much.

Glad you are feeling better 🙂 You are amazing, and I’m grateful that you share your life with us. Exercise has become my outlet. Martial arts has made me much more calm ironically, and when work isn’t hellish like it is this week, I practice it pretty regularly. My biggest issue lately has been finding out that people I thought were good people really aren’t. I spent hours listening to this one person’s constant issues with everything and then it’s like she disappeared. I was always the one to keep in contact and see if she was ok, but she’s proven to me that she is not a good friend and I’d even say not a good person after enough interactions with her to judge this. My problem is that I care about everyone and want to see the best from them, and I get upset when I’ve put a lot of time into someone but they don’t even care enough to be civil. That’s my venting for today. You are an amazing person, and it’s humbling to see that you go through bad moments, too.

This actually made me very angry. I understand that people are entitled to their own opinions but, too often, they thoughtlessly criticize others (especially on the internet). It’s easy to say “don’t let that stuff bother you”, but I just wanted to let you know that *I* am bothered for you. Not only do I think it was very rude of the stranger, I also think that he/she is totally wrong. Maybe I’m not the majority, but I read your blog – one of very, very few that I read regularly and the only one I comment on – because of your personality. I even developed a (not really very large) interest in makeup based on your recs. But you could be writing about anything and I’d still be reading. That’s the truth. I hope you keep blogging just the way you are now, as long as you’re happy doing it. If others don’t like it, Eff them. Sorry, I mean, they don’t have to read. 🙂 You hang in there – you always make me smile or laugh and I hope you never change! <3

Oh, Karen. YOU are my inspiration for beauty blogging. I love that you put so much effort and personality into every post. These many comments should keep you goin’ versus that one lousy comment. Cheers to you!!

P.S. Everyone have their bad moments. I had mine just last night, too. 😛

Karen, I feel you…we’ve all had days like this when everything just seems to be going downhill. Hang in there. And, btw, thanks for the tip. This might come in handy someday (I do hope not in the near future, though. Hehe!) What I like about you is your personality, the fact that we both appreciate anything about the ’80s, we have almost the same skin tone and Tabs (I don’t have any cats, though I do have 6 dogs). You have a lot of people who loves you and we’re all behind you, so don’t mind them haters. :))
