I’ve Got the Blues… I’ve Got the Clarins Ultramarine Eye Pencil Blues

February 18th, 2009 by Karen 35 Comments

Eons ago in chemistry lab, I learned the hard way (don’t touch fire!) that the hottest part of a flame burns blue.

Wouldn’t you know it? — the same holds true for the Clarins Ultramarine Eye Pencil ($23, new for spring 2009).

Ultramarine’s dark, shimmery sapphire blue put me into a trance. It applies with lots of pigment, gliding along the skin and depositing a rich blue line with barely any tugging at the skin.

It’s not waterproof, but it wears well along the lash line. On me it starts to smudge a little after six hours.

It even works great layered beneath powder eyeshadows. I tried pairing it with a mix of the violet, teal and pink shades from the Clarins Nature Temptations Palette for a psychedelic duo chrome effect that flashed from pink to green to teal to blue. 🙂

Clarins Ultramarine Eye Pencil Blues

Price: $23
Use: A shimmery sapphire blue eyeliner
Makeup and Beauty Blog Rating: A

Ultramarine’s not inexpensive for a liner, but I think the color and durability make it worth the price.

Remember how I was looking for new workout music last week? You guys left me some great suggestions.

Here’s one of the tunes I came across… What do you think? It starts off kinda slow but picks up after about a minute (LOL! It’s 10 minutes long!).

Speaking of dancing, I’ve got hip hop class tonight. What are you up to?

Karen

Gorge! But I can’t wear eyeliner that’s not waterproof. It’s too risky you know?

    Wow, that’s a gorgeous shade!
I wish I could wear blue liners, but they make my stone grey-blue peepers look really odd.
    /sighs
I’m stuck using browns and blacks.
It looks great on you Karen!

    Hi Arianne,

I hear ya. This does pretty well for a non-waterproof eyeliner. In general I find Clarins liners to have pretty good staying power.

Have you ever tried Lancome’s Le Stylo Waterproof? It’s really great!

    Hi Kailey,

    Thanks! 🙂

Don’t despair — there are some really fantastic browns out there! Do you have MAC Fluidline in Graphic Brown? It’s this super gorge shimmery brown that would probably make your eyes *pop*.

This is BEE-YOU-TEE-FUL! I use my deep truth Mac shadow as a liner to achieve a similar look.

Thanks! Oh, I bet Deep Truth as liner looks so pretty! Do you apply it wet or dry?

    Hi Indian Girl,

Yeah, the Clarins pencils are quite pricy. I like their colors and textures though… plus they last a long time. 🙂

I don’t have that, actually, but I’ll certainly look into it!
I use Bobbi Brown eyeliner pots in sepia ink at the moment, and also Lancome eyeshadow in Guest List as
    a shadow liner =]

OH this is perfect timing, I was just thinking I wanted to buy a blue eyeliner … I have brown eyes like you and I think blue would look hot! I’ll have to check this one out; was going to look at MAC first! 🙂

Looks great 🙂 I went to a gig of a local Swedish band last night (Twiggy Frostbite, they’re really cool) and tonight I’m going to the ballet, I got free tickets from the university’s international office 🙂

wow, i love this blue color. I’m really looking for one with shimmer and highly pigmented like this–do you happen to know of one that has really good staying power? I’d be even willing to go down a notch in terms of color if it stays put really well. I have horrible luck with things giving me the ol’ raccoon eyes, within a few hours of wearing!
    I probably should workout tonight also….we’ll see… 🙂

    Hi Tanya,

I don’t have a lot of blues, but Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencils stay really well and apply with loads of super shimmer.

Here’s a blue that’s slightly more teal that I like called Flipside.

    Hope this helps. 🙂

Haven’t tried any til today – tried out some from MAC today (Blooz, was it?!) but instead I ended up buying a green eyeliner! Think it suited me more 😛

    Hi Karen,

I just got back from my Aerobics class! It’s great, on Thursdays we focus on muscle endurance and do weights–which is something I can never get myself to do on my own so yeah 😉

This blue eyeliner is totally awesome! But alas, I’m too much of a neutrals kind of girl for it =/

Just wanted to let you know that I’ve fallen in love with Clinique’s High Impact Curling Mascara! It’s like a bigger, more volumized grown up sister of Lash Power, which I loooove! 😀

Hope you’re doing well! Isn’t it great that we’re getting a break from all the dreary weather lately?

It was a modern production but I really liked it. It was by the Cullberg company, they’re really good. You can check out their website here:http://www.cullbergballet.se/EN/Home

That’s cool, but I’d rather have my Urban Decay 24/7 liner in Deviant!
Same awesome color, but it lasts all day and it’s less expensive!

    Hi Lesley,

Your aerobics class sounds like fun. I don’t like doing weights by myself, either. It’s so much more fun when you’re in a class, right?

Even if you’re a neutrals girl there’s always room for a lil’ blue. 😉 How about a really dark navy blue liner? It practically functions as black, but might be fun for days when you want to mix it up!

I am glad you like that Clinique mascara. Isn’t it amazing how it keeps the curl lifted all day long?

Anyway, I’m so happy the sun is finally out. It’s nice to a break from the rain. Now if we could just fast forward to spring already!

I know! For a long time I always thought of it as kinda stuffy, but they make some really sexy colors.

Hmm, I wonder if they’re gonna bring the Teal Terror mascara back for summer… *crosses fingers*

    Hi Karen B.,

Thank you for sharing that! I loved that first sequence they did in that video. I’m not a modern kinda girl, but I can certainly appreciate the technical aspect to it. I’ve tried it before and my body just won’t do it, LOL. 🙂
