The MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinishes Sculpt and Spotlight Skin, Getting You Ready to Take the Stage

April 9th, 2013 by Karen 28 Comments

MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinish
That’s me wearing MAC’s Extra Dimension Skinfinishes in Shape the Future just below my cheekbones, and Definitely Defined above them

The three MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinishes ($30 each for a 0.31-ounce pan) round out the new MAC In Extra Dimension collection. Face and cheek duos, they have a luminous liquid-powder formula, and I’ve been alternating between two of them this week in Definitely Defined and Shape the Future.

Putting a highlighter and bronzer together in each pan takes the guesswork out of figuring out which colors go together (love that), but man! — these bronzers sure do shimmer.

The effect gets a little lost in these pics, but in real life it’s like WHOA! The other day I applied one of these as a contouring color before heading out to run errands, and I swear — I looked like a backup dancer on Beyonce’s Super Bowl performance.

DOPE if you like defined, high-contrast contouring that looks fierce on stage, but for everyday errands? Like if you just want to run into Safeway to buy bananas (B-A-N-A-N-A-S)? Mmmmmmaybe not so much.

I do like the highlighters, though. They have an effortless shine that’s very forgiving of my fine lines.

The MAC Extra Dimension Skinfinishes are available now online, but they don’t arrive on MAC counters and in stores until April 11 in North America (internationally in May).

PRICE: $30 per 0.31-ounce duo
AVAILABILITY: Available now online, and coming to North American MAC counters April 11 (internationally in May)

I own Double Defined and LOVE it, but I agree that it’s not your everyday highlighter. Or you can always use a duo fibre to apply less product. When I want a super intense shine, I apply it with my fingers! I was hoping that Definitely Defined would be more different than Superb, but they look similar?

        Hi CrystalCandy!

        How are ya? 🙂

I’m not sure what you mean by Superb…maybe you were referring to Shape the Future?

          I’m fine! You? 🙂

No, the Extra Dimension skinfinish that came out last year, Superb was one of them! Since I alreay own it, I don’t want anything too similar. 🙂

I’m good. Tired right now (it’s the end of the day here), but good. 🙂 I had a fun time swatching at the mall this afternoon…that always puts me in a good mood!

Okay, re: Superb. I have it in my hand right now and it’s peachier and slightly darker compared to the highlighter in Definitely Defined.

Ohh lucky, I wish I had great brands to swatch in my city, nothing really exciting here! Can’t wait to see what you swatched! 🙂

Thanks for the comparison, I’ll try to resist! 😛

It was YSL, Laura Mercier and Bobbi Brown. I couldn’t walk away from YSL empty handed! I picked up a gorgeous green polish (like I needed another one).

When the light is better tomorrow I’ll try to do a quick swatch for you of the two shades. 🙂

Aww thank you, that would be awesome!

Oh I love Bobbi Brown, haven’t bought anything from that brand since many months now, but I love the shimmerbricks!

No problem. I’m doing a round of swatches in a few and will include it. 🙂

So, Bobbi is my new obsession. Have you tried her Foundation Stick?! It is AMAZING. Life changing, even.

No, not yet! I’m afraid that it might not be the best choice for my oily skin though.

These might look a little too frosty to me… Shape the Future is almost like a blush/highlighter duo though! Seems pretty versatile.

      Hi Sunny,

You could definitely use it as a blush/highlighter. Your skin works well with orangey tones, yes?

They do look too frosty and I read some reviews that said they emphasize pores. That’s too bad cause Superb from Extra Dimension collection a year ago is my favorite highlighter.

How is your day? Tomorrow is my hair color appointment but I still not sure what I wanna have done …

      Hi Agata,

Yeah, I kinda wish that the sheen was toned down like the blushes. I’m wearing Blazing Haute today and it looks so natural. I guess MAC wanted something to counter balance the softness of the cheek colors.

I’m doing good today, just kinda tired right now. It’s almost 5 here and I’ve been going full speed since 7! I just got back from swatching at Nordstrom. I checked out the new YSL summer and Laura Mercier and they’re both super pretty. They’re having a beauty event in the next couple weeks where they’re offering free makeovers. I wish you lived closer so we could go together. That would be so much fun!

Have fun getting your hair done tomorrow. Are you thinking of a big change for summer?

I’m always drawn to these kind of shimmery products and then when I apply them and look in a mirror and see the sheen, it’s a YIKES moment. Even Missy will take one look and give me a “ooh, girl, NO!” expression.

Awww, you’re the sweetest. Itd be so much fun to go together and get a makeover and do some swatching 🙂 Did Nordstrdom have the new Estee Lauder gel blushes? I feel like they will be awesome.

As far as my hair I don’t want a big change because I love bright blonde color but I’m kinda bored. Maybe I will get some darker highlights? Maybe something like yours just reveresed-darker in place of your carmel ones and blonde all over…Women have such tough choices to make, lol.

I looked for them, but they didn’t have them on counter yet. I do have a sample to try and I’m pretty excited about it. I have it on the list of things to test tomorrow, woo hoo!

Re: hair. I love your current bright blonde shade; it really suits you! I think lowlights can look really cool, but maybe save them for fall? You can stay bright for summer and then transition into something darker for fall/winter. Whatever you do, don’t tell your husband, LOL! I’ve learned to just surprise El Hub, otherwise he pouts for days.

Maybe you’re right that I should save darker for the fall. And my husband doesn’t usually even notice when I get my hair done, lol. And yay for testing new products 🙂

So I’m confused. When I go to the MAC website, it says Double Definition is available, but there other 2 EDSFs are listed as “Coming Soon” – does this mean they haven’t launched yet? I love the idea of the blush/highlight combo, but I do wish these were a little less intense in finish–at least they’re not glittery.

      Hi Lisa,

Sometimes this happens. The product could’ve either sold out or they have a delay in getting it online for some reason.

Hm…definitely pretty in the pan and certainly a unique looking cheek duo but I will pass–it’s much too frosted for my liking (my pores would be BAM in your face!! :P)

I swirl both colours together and use it as a highlighter. I have Definitely Defined and Shape the Future and I think both are too shimmery to wear as blushes. Using the two colours together also dials back the shine a bit.
