Outfit of the Day Vol. 14: An Outerwear Epiphany Sparked by a Bellatrix Blazer and Starring a Pair of AG Jeans

May 9th, 2013 by Karen 19 Comments

ag jeans, bellatrix blazer and poverty flats bag
Get the look: Bellatrix Lace Print Blazer, AG Denim Leggings,
Michael Kors Braided Chain Platforms (no longer available, but here’s something similar), Old Navy Tank, Chain earrings, Poverty Flats Satchel, Tiffany Interlocking Circles Bangle

I know it’s almost summer and all, but jackets and blazers are where it’s at, man. This was a recent revelation, by the way. For years and years, I pretty much ignored ’em, mostly because I thought, “Why bother when you’re just going to take them off as soon as you get inside? Get a cute shirt instead!”

My outlook changed when I realized that they’re one of the quickest ways to not look like a total schlub.

My new philosophy as it pertains to outerwear? I like. Pull on a plain top, like this black tank from Old Navy ($7.50!), a pair of jeans, and a cute jacket or blazer for a simple, fairly stylish look.

This getup here has been my office uniform lately, as Tabs insists upon a professional dress code (strictly enforced). 🙂

Oh! — if you’re on the market for a new pair of skinny jeans, I think these ones by AG are so bomb. Earlier this year I walked into a Nordies and awkwardly asked a sales associate to point me toward the closest things to Pajama Jeans…and they handed me these dove gray skinnies.

We’ve been attached at the hip ever since.

And if you happen to be vertically challenged (said the girl barely an inch over five feet tall), they’re great because they don’t have to be hemmed.

In other news, what are you wearing today? Did you dress up or go casual?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I LOVE your jeans and that blazer! I was in a uniform for volunteering today, and tonight I am in exercise attire in hopes that after I finish eating, I will magically want to do my CrossFit and interval workout since my tummy isn’t hurting anymore.

Jeans, nice shoes (whether they are flats, heels, or boots) and a blazer can dress up any look in a heartbeat. I have a khaki military style blazer by Nine West that I found in TJ Maxx years ago and it goes with jeans and dresses so well. I will also wear my suit blazers with jeans and I am on the hunt for more cute but neutral blazers to have a few more options. I find Forever 21 has always had cheap blazers and jackets that look adorable and dress up even the rattiest of jeans.

How are you liking CrossFit? There’s a gym in my town and it looks intense! I’m kinda intrigued and frightened at the same time, LOL.

I’m looking for more blazers, too. If I find any cute neutral ones I’ll let ya know. 🙂

I do it at home because I don’t want to pay up to $200 a month (and martial arts is already at $140 a month for all 3 classes – fighter training, which is like CrossFit in a way, Muay Thai, and Jiu Jitsu, which I need to get back into). I love CrossFit, though. I can get a full body workout done in 15 minutes that is challenging and works every body part. I get my CrossFit workouts off the official website and off Pinterest. If CrossFit was much cheaper, I’d join a gym for the workouts. Around here in MD, we also have SoldierFit, which is boot camp style workouts with some CrossFit in there. I will be looking into signing up for that in June, once everything this month (half marathon excitement, working the extra shifts, and wedding stuff) dies down.

My basic outfit formula is skinnies + plain top + flowy cardigan. I have a harder time with blazers because I’d have to get them tailored to fit me.

    I love the handbag!

      Hi Chelsea,

I was thinking the other day that I need more cardigans in my life. I like the idea of having a few lightweight long ones with pockets (for cat treats, of course) to wear with skinny jeans. 🙂 Maybe in bright colors, too!

      Is it Friday yet? LOL

Great look Karen! I see you bought the Poverty Flats bag from DSW that you mentioned earlier this week – it goes perfectly with your outfit 🙂

P.S. What kind/barrel size of curling iron do you use?

This is super cute and very put together. 🙂 I generally only wear blazers for very professional work gigs because we’re an extremely casual office (running shorts and a v-neck Under Armour T today). I think a nicely tailored blazer shapes and hides all kinds of things – I look at least 10 lbs lighter when I wear mine. 🙂

I totally need the bag and blazer-STAT! I need to lose some weight before I go outside in my skinny jeans though.

I love your look of the day! I used to wear blazers to work all the time a few years ago and then got lazy and switched to cardigans, but there’s nothing like a stylish blazer to really bring a look together 🙂

    Sweet outfit! Love the jacket.

I dressed casually today. Top with birds, black pants, and pink Guess sandals.
