Have You Ever Stopped Someone on the Street to Ask About Their Makeup or Hair?

Makeup, hair, clothes, bags, shoes, earrings — all. The. Time.

If someone’s workin’ something and it catches my eye, I have no qualms about walking up to them and asking (politely, of course) for the scoop, be it what color of lipstick they’re wearing or where they got their hair done.

And even guys are fair game. A few months ago at the movies with El Hub, the guy ringing up my popcorn had the most enviable, perfectly manscaped brows, so I complimented him and asked where he got them done (also said he should tip them extra next time because they do great work, LOL!).

What about you? Have you ever stopped someone on the street to ask about their makeup or hair (or any other aspect of their look)?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I can totally see you doing that. 🙂 I’ve done it a couple of times and also asked people if I could take their picture if I particularly liked their hair style or hair color. A picture is worth 1000 (badly explained) words for a stylist!

That’s genius! I never thought to ask to take someone’s picture. Are they usually into it?

      Happy Tuesday. 🙂

Happy Wednesday! HAHA! Darn our time difference!

I think my results are skewed because, both times, I was at hair shows so the gals were really happy to pose. It probably feels like an extra big compliment to be at a show dedicated to hair and have someone think yours is picture worthy. 🙂

People on the street might be a little more wary but, you’re not a creeper, so I think you could pull it off. HAHA!

I have absolutely no problem with asking about something I find particularly attractive, but since I don’t want to come across as a crazed stalker, I’ll usually start with a general comment like, “That’s a gorgeous lipstick you’re wearing.” If the person seems open to my gambit, I’ll then ask what it is and where she got it. I find the vast majority of people appreciate the compliment and interest.

Oh, totally. I find that telling someone they look great always brings a smile to their face. It’s a nice thing to do and I like putting out that good energy into the universe, you know?

Hope you’re having a nice week so far. How’s your day going?

I am usually she with strangers so I usually don’t ask but it happened a few times, I asked a few girls about their hair color and where they got it done.

I have definitely admired stranges from afar, but haven’t actually talked to them. I’ve had strangers compliment me on things a couple of times before, and I think its so nice. I’ll have to remember to do that for others b/c hopefully it brightens their day. 🙂

I’ve never done that 🙂 People would probably pepperspray your ass if you did that here, lol. During my holiday in the US I noticed that people there are so much more open and spontaneous.

I do that all the time – generally for footwear, bags, lipstick. Honestly, sometimes I ask them because I genuinely like the product and want to know (to buy)….and sometimes its just to make them feel good! You see someone in a cafe looking a little sad, and you compliment them on their choice of dressing or accessorizing and see the smile spread on their face…its a fab feeling!

But haven’t ever tried it with guys! Nope!

Absolutely if the moment and atmosphere seems right. I like to give and get compliments and I’m always on the lookout for a good hairstylist!

I’ve done it several times! I approach them and say I’m sorry to bother you, but I really like X (hair, lipstick, shoes whatever) Would you mind telling me where you got them? I’ve yet to have anyone be offended or think I’m stalking them or whatever – they have all been very gracious and flattered! 🙂

Haha, “Manscaped”. I love it! I compliment people more on their clothing or jewelry than makeup or hair. Lipstick, though, is something I never hesitate to ask about– mainly because I usually want the shade for myself!

I definitely have – although some people are a bit nicer about it than others. I use to have long hair about midway down my back (until sadly I chopped about 4 inches off). One day I had it lazily clipped up and I was asked where I bought my hair because the lady wanted to buy some. It was awkward convincing her it was real – I’m not sure if I should have taken that as a compliment or not! lol

Yes and I’ve also shoe-stalked someone and then found the shoes online without having to ask them!!!

I’ll do it for shoes, lipstick, and clothes if it seems safe and I’m not going to get stabbed. 🙂

Never stopped anyone about their makeup but have stopped plenty of women and asked who cut their hair.

If I see someone with great hair, makeup or fashion I make a point to compliment them. Here in the UK it seems taboo to compliment a complete stranger but the smiles I get are worth it.

As a woman I think we should go out of our way to support each other more, it’s too easy to catty and bitchy!

I haven’t asked where did they get …. but I will give out compliments on outfits, accessories and makeup. the huge smile that I get in return is fantastic.

Hi Karen, well I’ve never stopped anyone about their makeup, BUT I always stop people about their fashion/style/outfit! Well, I do it because I shoot for a small magazine for their street look section.
It’s pretty fun 🙂 I like people who stand out from the crowd!
(drop me a line if anyone of you reading the comments would like to be featured, why not?)

But I’d be really shy to ask abt lipstick color or so, just because I don’t want to be annoying. I do make compliments though if I really like the hair/style or I just spot a beautiful person.
    Cheers!

yes! if someone looks approachable and really amazing, i will say something quickly and move on. “great shoes!”, “fantastic hair today”, “love the eyes!” they don’t need to know me and it doesn’t have to be a big deal but a little acknowledgement is nice. =)

Yes, I have 🙂 Very politely and trying not to invade other’s people space but yes 🙂 Usually a scoop on a nail polish or a bracelet or shoes 🙂
