Olay Body Wash Plus Tone Enriching Ribbons: Um, Where’s the Shimmer?

February 28th, 2009 by Karen 28 Comments

olay body wash plus tone enriching ribbons

I hesitate when it comes to trying shimmery body products because walking around with sparkly skin holds no appeal to me, but my curiosity won out when I picked up Olay Body Wash Plus with Tone Enriching Ribbons ($5).

Olay claims the product contains things called mica minerals to add “tone enriching” shimmer to skin while delivering “deep moisture.” My skin always feels drier than shredded wheat, so I gave it a try.

I’d half hoped wondered if the shimmer would leave me looking like I’d just come home from a rave circa 1992.

gold-finger-1

Since the product’s big selling point is the shimmer, I expected to see some on my skin, but no such luck. I couldn’t see even the faintest glow — no glitter, no shimmer, nada.

I wanted to make sure it wasn’t due to my darker skin tone, so I had El Hub, who’s lighter than I am, give it a try.

Same thing. I couldn’t see any difference on his skin, either (although I give thanks every time something prompts El Hub to clean).

At least the product delivers well on its deep moisture promise. Most other $5 drugstore body washes make my skin feel tight and look ashy, but Tone Enriching Ribbons hydrates well enough to soothe even the driest spots on my legs and elbows. That alone makes it worth the $5 price.

Use: Works well as a hydrating body wash but doesn’t deliver on the shimmer

I should add that I really dig the fragrance. It leaves my skin smelling like Fruit Stripe gum!

Homework and hijinks

Remember the assignment for my journalism class that I mentioned the other day, the one where I’m supposed to write a mock celebrity obituary? Well, I’m leaning toward Joaquin “Hot Mess” Phoenix.

joaquin phoneix before he lost his mind was hot

joaquin phoenix looking scraggly as all hell

It could have a hip hop spin to go with Joaquin’s new career as a hip hop superstar, or maybe some of Joaquin’s associates could say a few words.

Other than doing some homework I may hit the gym in a little while, but that’s about it for me. I hope you’re having a good one. 🙂

Karen

You adopted my hot mess moniker for Joaquin. That guy needs a serious makeover *rolls eyes*

I forgot all about fruit stripe gum! That is some yummy stuff. Not sure I want to smell like it though. Do you have any other tricks for getting husbands to clean? HaHa.

Hi Karen! You should try the olay body wash with radiance ribbons! It leaves shimmer behind, but it is pretty subtle. My hubby uses it when he’s out of his stuff and I tease him about the sparkles 🙂

MAN fruit stripes were the SHIT! *memories*

I love Ivory body wash. I have the worst skin and it moisturizes like a dream. Give it a shot, its way cheap.

I used the non-shimmer Olay w/ribbons body wash (it’s in a pink bottle) and I really liked it. It was moisturizing and the scent was pretty.

I am so sad that this is what has become of JP. I really had the hots for him, and now I can’t believe this is even the same man! 🙁

supposedly JP’s look and demeanor is for a documentary he’s been shooting. when he appeared on the dave letterman show he was acting all weird but at the end leaned into dave and let him know what was up. JP also laughs at some of his own jokes secretly during the interview. no need to worry, he’s still hot underneath all that fuzz! haha

also, i use st. ive’s “whipped silk” body wash. it’s pretty cheap, smells good and leaves my skin feeling super soft.

In december I bought the Philosophy Snow bodylotion, they promised a very light golden sprakle after using it. Uhmmmm… I was Yellow! There was a sparkle ideed, but who wants a yellow one? (however the fragance was lovely 🙂

I like the Olay Body Washes with the various kinds of ribbons, I’m a big fan of the moisture they give, and also the smell. My personal favourite is the one with the Shea Butter Ribbons and it’s also my favourite colour 🙂

I once used Caress Glowing Touch body wash and I enjoyed the almost citrus smell to it, but I actually liked the fact that it didn’t deposit actual shimmer to my skin. But yeah, I guess what’s the point of this one if you could use the other ‘flavours’ in this Olay line and get the same results?

As soon as I saw this I knew it wouldn’t work. It’s a body WASH. So any shimmer is going down the drain! I’m going to review it anyway:)

Karen, I wonder about how the ‘shimmer’ is supposed to stay on if its being deployed in a Body wash? I mean, wouldn’t it just wash off? LOL. Either way, $5 isn’t a bad bet for anything.

I’m new to the blog, and a full time MBA student myself (just landed myself a part time job at the Chanel counter though–score!) What are you studying?

I too am wary of shimmer, but I really want a lotion that leaves my legs all shiny and gleaming like a runway model’s! I can take or leave body washes in general… but I sure have a lot of them! 😛

Personally, I’m not a big fan of the glimmer type lotions. I prefer just a normal one that has a good fragrance to it! I buy all of mine online for a lot cheaper than retail. Here’s a link to where I get my stuff if you are interested:

    hi, karen–

maybe the next time i visit my mom in oregon, i’ll pick up some of this olay stuff. my skin gets much drier there than it does here in honolulu.

as for getting our men to wash themselves, this is my trick: sniff near him, wrinkle my face, and say one word: sourdough.

that gets the sweets to blink and bathe within four hours. what is it with boys and their reluctance to shower sometimes??!!

    Hi Sherry,

The Fruit Stripe smell is pretty subtle. It’s nice — wants me to bust out a pack, LOL!

I wish I had the magic trick to getting husbands to clean. I’ll never understand why boys are so gross.

    Hi Tiffany,

I like subtle shimmer, so I’ll go looking for it. Hopefully I can find it on sale soon. 🙂

That’s too cute that your sweetie rocks the subtle shimmer when he runs out of his stuff, awww.

    Hi SarahPuffy,

I know! I remember the purple ones being my favorite.

It’s been a minute since I’ve used any Ivory products. I am always looking for good moisturizers so thanks for the recommendation!

    Hi Mishel,

Ah, interesting! I will have to watch that interview again and see if I can catch those things.

Thanks for mentioning Whipped Silk –’tis good stuff. I like to use it during the summertime, when my skin is a little less dry. I like how it sinks in so quickly.

    Hi Lesley,

Oh, I haven’t tried the Shea Butter Flavor. I sometimes find the buttery smells overwhelming, but Olay handles fragrance so well usually so I’ll have to give it a sniff next time I go to the store. 🙂

    Hi Carrie,

Congrats on your new Chanel gig! That’s so exciting. Any thoughts on the summer stuff yet? I haven’t seen it, but I’m anxiously waiting. 🙂

I finished undergrad ten years ago and just recently started taking a journalism class as a refresher course (and to help sort out the whole with the “what do I want to be when I grow up” thing). What year are you in your MBA studies?

Nuxe makes a shimmery body oil that works great! It’s kinda pricy, but it’s fun for the summer. 🙂

    Hi Nai,

You are lucky that works! I swear El Hub wears his stinkiness with pride…

One thing I miss about Hawaii: the fact that I don’t have to use heavy moisturizer on my legs, even in the winter. 🙂

Wow, you couldn’t see the shimmer? O.o

When I use it, I get little sparkly specs all over. I am super pale though, which may have something to do with it being visable. It does wear off after a while though.

I really like this tone enhancing wash. It has done wonders for my skin which has a habit of becoming inflamed and red easily. 🙂

Hi. ive been using the olay ribbons body wash collection for quite a few months now, and they all work great. i love the green one, it leaves shine and moisturizes. the blue one is the least great. but with the tone enriching one, i think it works. i see the shimmer and my skins is actually a bit less pale (im fair). But i still think the green is the best
