What’s Nude and Covered Up at the Same Time? Your Lips When Wearing These New Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylos

August 12th, 2013 by Karen 22 Comments

Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo No. 4, a pink beige
That’s pinky beige Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylo in No. 4 smilin’ at you from Novato, California

The last time I was surrounded by this much nudity was last year’s Bay to Breakers in San Francisco, ba-dum bum!

Ha, I jest. 🙂

Well…not really. And that was a little more jarring than the nudity I’m talking about today.

Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylos
Oh, hai!

Really, though, when a dude jogs past you in nothing but tennies and a fanny pack at the crack (no pun intended) of dawn, it’s a lot to take in before your first cup of coffee.

But I digress…

These new Femme Nude Lip Stylos by Hourglass ($30 each) are a joy to play with, partly because there are so many different ways a nude lip can go wrong, and this new collection of twist-up, retractable lip pencils gets it right.

Hourglass envisioned all six Stylos working together as part of a wardrobe of nudes — nudes for minimal makeup days, nudes for when you’re feeling artsy-fartsy, and nudes for when you have a hankering for something nude and slightly dramatic.

A satin finish gives lips a sheen while ingredients like vitamin E nourish and protect yo’ pout from the elements.

The 411 on the new Hourglass Femme Nude Lip Stylos…

  • These feel like feathers on my lips, and sometimes I completely forget I’m wearing ’em.
  • They have an unscented, unflavored formula, but my basset hound-like sense of smell detects a whiff of something waxy right when they’re applied; it fades quickly, though.
  • They have a fairly limited wear time. I get about two hours of regular wear out of them if I’m sipping water or tea. Three if I’m being extra careful, not eating or drinking anything or blowing kisses at Ryan Gosling pics on my computer screen.
  • They have a lurvely satin finish. I think the sheen gives ’em some kick.
  • Opacity like whoa! Even the lightest shades, if you build them up, completely block out my natural lip color, and they do it without appearing patchy or uneven…as long as I pat the product down with a finger or press my lips together to help the lipstick settle.

Yep, these are cool — like really lightweight semi-matte lipsticks, and I think they look phenomenal with smokey eyes, especially when you layer a pink or peach gloss on top (I like MAC’s Fulfilled Plushglass, and it works with all six shades).

But really, unless you’re a makeup artist, chances are you’ll only need maybe one or two of these, since the differences between the shades are so subtle.

I don’t think you can go wrong with Nos. 4, 5 or 6. They’re the smoothest of the bunch and the easiest to wear.

PRICE: $30 each
AVAILABILITY: Available now at Hourglass counters ad Barneys New York, Bergdorf Goodman, Sephora and online
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B/B+ (considering the price, I do wish they lasted longer)

Adios, Monday!

It’s been real.

I hope your day was filled with kitty hugs and kisses. Today I’ve been getting in as much tabby time as possible, since I won’t be seeing him for a week after Tuesday…except for Skype and Face Time video chat, of course. Tabs insists on face-to-face morning meetings.

What are you up to? Doing anything fun tonight?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hmmm…. I like the look of No. 5 & 6. The others look like they would wash me out to much since they’re opaque.

Speaking of Hourglass, I got that coral combo that you were raving about after your visit to the headquarters. You were right, EPIC!

AHHHH! I was hoping you’d try it! I’m so glad you did. 😀 Have you worn it with golds/teals yet?

Love it with teal, and also with a deep forest green top that I have. I see getting a lot of use out of both items, separately and together.

I have #2 and love it! I like the whole vibe of these and wouldn’t mind to have a pinkier one like #4 too. I think they all look great on you!

Bay to Breakers always brings out the crazies. So what does that make us?

Your hair looks amazing in these pictures. Like whoa!

I am not really a nude lip wearer but was curious about these since it’s Hourglass. I like the shade N3 the best. And lol about RG kisses 😉

I love to look at nude lipsticks but have stopped buying them. They all seem to wash me out.

Hey Karen, thanks for the swatches and face shots! They’re always super helpful! You look great with the darker three, and I think those are the ones that will work better on me as well 😉

Whoa! They look amazing!! Will be heading out for one of the last shades for sure… Too bad about the wear time though! Do you feel like they get weird and patchy as they fade or it’s nothing dramatic?
Awesome review as always and my best to Tabs xx

Yeah, I really love the three last ones on you. The other ones are great as well, but I do like some colour on the lips. I’m very tempted to get one of these, they look amazing!

Nude lips literally look like the kiss of death on me but I noticed the opacity of these in your pics. You can’t see any of your lip color peeking through and they all look really good with your smokey eye. 🙂

I had forgotten about your Bay to Breakers story. That would have been very jarring, first thing in the AM. And speaking of jarring, I can’t imagine it’s too fun for a fella to run without any “support”.

5 and 6 looks super pretty! I am always a little turned off by the prices of hourglass products though 🙁

I’m not a fan of crayons but these are gorgeous! No 5 & 6 seem to be right up my alley! 🙂

I’m not a fan of nude lips but I want these! I really like the packaging as well. I do feel a lack of a warmer shade, something with a little more brown to work with deeper complexions.

I’m not really a fan of nude lip shades because they tend to wash me out, but no 5 looks very pretty!

I wanted to love these, but I just can’t do nude, especially not opaque nude. I tried these on at Sephora, and it’s a no go for me.

Funny but as I was scrolling through, I was not loving 1-3 thinking, in real life… not wearable but when I got to 4-6,I completely thought, there they are! Good looking products and you are so stunning!

Thanks for posting on these Karen. I was excited when I heard about them and saw advance pics. But, pass. They look flat and dry and really washed out. You just saved me a ton of money 🙂

Karen, I just found your blog because I googled these lipsticks – I already put your blog on bloglovin and LOVE your make-up in this post. You look gorgeous.

Would you please let me know what products you are wearing on your eyes? Would you maybe also do a tutorial on this eye make-up?

    Thank you 🙂
