12 Pans of Shimmer Shine in the Sonia Kashuk Limited Edition “Jewel of an Eye” Eye Couture Palette

August 27th, 2013 by Karen 55 Comments

Sonia Kashuk Jewel of an Eye
The current apple o’ my eye: the $19.99 Eye Couture Palette in Jewel of an Eye from Sonia Kashuk

With autumn about to make its big debut, what’s one way to stay on trend without breaking the bank?

The Sonia Kashuk Limited Edition “Jewel of an Eye” Eye Couture Palette

Perhaps you’ve already stocked up on fall staples over the summer — a chic red lipstick, a black liquid liner, a deep plum (and) or berry gloss — and are saying to yourself, “Whee!” and asking, “What else can we put in there?”

Throw some jewel-toned shadows into the mix

Ya know, for emerald, amber, amethyst and sapphire smokey eyes. All are so, SO apropos with knee-high boots, tweed blazers and snuggly, chunky knits.

Ah… I can almost hear the leaves crunching beneath my feet and Tabs whining because of how chilly it is outside (too chilly to go for his daily walk). Maybe we should get matching turtlenecks — my cat and I — because that’s what I really need — to give my neighbors another reason to think I’m a crazy cat lady. 🙂

As far as fall makeup, I suppose we could hunt and peck for jewel-toned duos and trios, or spend an arm and a leg searching for “the perfect combo,” but who has time for all that?

Try this: tell your hubby/honey/Ryan Gosling that you’ll be back in 10 minutes, because we’re going to Target to check out Sonia Kashuk’s new “Jewel of an Eye” Eye Couture Palette ($19.99).

Okay…make that 30 minutes. We both know that Target is a time warp. We’ll never get out of there in less than 15.

12 pans of shimmer

This 12-pan palette of intense, shimmery shadows pulsates with possibilities for trendy jewel-toned looks, and it’s RAD.

12 jewel-toned colors await you in the new Jewel of an Eye palette…

Craving colorful eye looks?

Sometimes I might wear just one of these shades by itself (like the dark purple shadow in the first row — my fave!), but this palette is perfect for more complicated looks and smokey eyes. There are so many great color combos here, and the shadows blend easily and last through the day with the help of an eye primer.

Jewel of an Eye is one of those palettes that just works in so many different ways. No matter which two shades I wear together, the combinations always work. I’ve even mixed and layered colors together to create custom shades, which is a lot of fun when you have an hour or two at home to just play.

Jewel of an Eye shines, and its shadows catch the light, but the shadows in Sonia’s Moroccan Dunes eye palette shine even brighter.

Any potential problems with this palette?

Just one minor one I can see: I do detect a small amount of fallout from these shadows. Not so much that it’s a deal breaker for me. Just something to keep in mind.

The final word

This is a great little palette, and seriously, I can’t believe it costs less than 20 bucks! I think it’s easily on par with products from Too Faced and Urban Decay.

Go on with yer bad self, Sonia! This jeweled palette’s a gem. 🙂

A little light reading…

Greetings and salutations on this terrific Tuesday, friend!

Got a book recommendation for ya… If you like thrillers and mysteries, check out Dark Places by Gillian Flynn.

Could. Not. Put. It. Down.

I also read Flynn’s Gone Girl earlier this year and couldn’t put that one down, either. I liked Dark Places just as much.

The book stars Libby Day. As a child, her mother and two sisters are murdered in what the media dub “The Satan Sacrifice of Kinnakee, Kansas.” Libby survives and achieves fame when she testifies that her 15-year-old brother, Ben, committed the act.

The plots weaves back and forth between the night of the crime and the present day, 25 years later. Libby is drawn back into the events of the murder when a group called the Kill Club, a group obsessed with investigating notorious crimes, finds her. The club suspects Ben’s innocence and hopes to discover proof to free him.

It’s a quick, suspenseful read — dark in some parts, so be prepared for that. All in all, though, I loved the story and the writing. Gillian Flynn’s got game.

Have you read any good books lately?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Love Sonia Kashuk, especially that Moroccan Dunes palette. I need to get some more of her palettes in general – they are affordable, and the colors are easy to wear but vibrant. I think her palettes are also good for work – they add a pop of color without making the eyes look too runway or artsy for work/professional environments (as much as I love Urban Decay, only some of what I own by them is professional-appropriate).

      Hi Katherine,

Yeah, Moroccan Dunes is one of my all-time Sonia faves, hands down. Totally Chanel-esque.

Have you tried her 12-pan matte palette? I have that one too and it’s great. It works really well with this one.

I have been fighting the urge to buy this for over a month. It is so pretty in the package, but i was suspicious of the quality. I already bought the new SK brush set with the magenta bristles, and they are so nice. Looks like i will be picking this up tomorrow!!

Oh, Karen, how you tempt us! I would love to pick this up, however, I am talking myself out of it due to the fact that I had to have UD Smoked last fall and have never been brave enough to do a jewel toned smoky with it, though I adore all those colors! Please do a FOTD jewel toned edition tutorial to help the color-shy combat our fall fears. Color for eyes is a huge fall trend, if we believe the September fashion bibles.

      Hi Lorraine,

YOU CAN DO IT! Have you tried wearing a single shade on your lid and sweeping a matte neutral brown or beige into the crease? That’s the easiest (and least scary) way I can think of.

Ooh, awesome. Speaking of, are you going to see City of Bones? It was pounded in the reviews. Seems like Hollywood has a very hard time translating popular YA books into movies. Hunger Games was probably the exception, though I know there are a lot of people who love the Twilight movies, too.

I wanted to see Elysium but I know you weren’t thrilled with it. At this point, it might be another Netflix (thank goodness for that service!). 🙂

I really liked all of Gillian Flynn’s books. I am a serial reader. If I find an author I like I will read all of the books. 🙂

If you liked Gone Girl you might like “Before I Go to Sleep” by SJ Watson. It has a similar darkness to it (but completely different story)

I also really like Jonathan Tropper, particularly his books “How to Talk to a Widower” and “This is Where I Leave You”. I actually liked all of his books. Funny (Laugh at loud funny), endearing and heartbreaking.
