The Fabulously Disco Divalicious MAC Antonio Lopez Collection’s Eye and Face Palettes Will Draw You In

August 27th, 2013 by Karen 42 Comments

MAC Antonio Lopez: 6 Eyes/Bronze and Face/Coral

I am a girl. I am a girl with dreams.

Makeup dreams.

BIG, BOLD makeup dreams. Dreams of getting all dolled up exactly like the gal on this new MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes palette, and then going to Petco to buy kitty litter.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes
Haaay, gurl, haaay!

SO FABULOUSLY DISCO DIVALICIOUS.

Let’s see… I think I have a blue scarf around here somewhere, and some black earrings, and I’m thinking I could probably imitate the hair. Maybe.

Oh, but that crazy-@ss earring?! I’ll definitely have to improv that, since something tells me I probably wouldn’t be able to find it (easily) at Claire’s.

The makeup, though, I’ve got that covered, boo-boo, thanks to the MAC Antonio Lopez collection’s mix of eye, lip and cheek palettes.

A bevy of pretty palettes

The new collection struts into North American MAC stores, onto counters and online September 12, and arrives at international locales the same month (international babes, you might want to swing by your local counter to ask your fave MAC artist for a firm date).

Soooo…who IS this dude?

First thing I thought when I saw these palettes was, “Oh, hell yes!” The second thing was, “Who is Antonio Lopez?”

Antonio Lopez (February 11, 1943 — March 17, 1987) was a world-renowned fashion illustrator who’s work appeared in many top-tier glossies like Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle, as well as the style pages of papers like The New York Times. In addition to his artwork, he’s known for discovering many famous models, too, including Grace Jones and Jerry Hall.

The new MAC Antonio Lopez collection features some of his drawings, with each of the palettes decorated with one of his muses (MAC calls the ladies “Antonio’s Girls”).

MAC Antonio Lopez collection
Hello, ladies!

An afternoon with Antonio

This afternoon I told Tabs that I could only work a half day because I had a prior engagement with three eyeshadow palettes and the two face palettes. He grumbled and bit my nose. 🙂

Then, I crossed my fingers, did a disco dance (the Hustle, IF you must know), and hoped to find just as much beauty inside these palettes as out.

What did I find?

Well, the one eye palette I felt kind of “eh” about at first, Teal, turned out to be much more interesting than I thought.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes/Teal Palette

The first time I saw its colors, they didn’t quite make sense to me, but after I started buffing and blending, the mix of bright blue and green played well with the smokier olive, black, gray and light violet shades.

Now if I could only get rid of the fallout… Thank goodness, there’s only a little. If I were forced, cruelly, to choose just one of these three eye palettes to get down with, I’d choose Teal quicker than you could say “boogie-oogie-oogie.”
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+/A-

As for fallout issues with the other two eye palettes, Violet and Bronze, nope. None.

MAC Antonio Lopez 6 Eyes/Bronze Palette

Violet’s pink and purple give it a foxy ’80s vibe, and I think that bottom row of gray, silver and black should satisfy my lust for smokey eyes (kind of reminds me of Prism by Hourglass). The cream shade in the upper right-hand corner, though? Not that inspiring, but I appreciate the contrast.

Bronze is like the sensible sister who, if pressured to have another a kamakazi, ends up dancing on top of a table, LOL!

I was really looking forward to Bronze because you know I lurves me my neutrals, especially the sassy pink and coral.

I love the idea of those shades contrasting with the gold, brown, taupe and cream, and I almost shed a glittery tear as I realized that the nuances in some of the colors are somewhat lost on my skin tone. Next time I think I’ll wet my brush head first before applying to coax out more intensity. If you’re a lighter lass than NC42, I don’t think the pigment would be an issue. This one’s both pretty and practical.

The collection also features two face palettes that, like Transformers, are more than meets the eye. Open the compact and BAM! — a blush and highlighter. Then slide the pan to the right to reveal a bronzer underneath.

Technology! We haz it! 🙂

Slide the top layer over to reveal the bronzer underneath! Face/Pink on the left and Face/Coral on the right.

Sorry, I’m a little cray right now. Must eat soon.

So, Face/Coral (officially, that’s its name) leans warm while Face/Pink leans cool, with Coral being the darker of the two.

MAC Antonio Lopez Face/Coral
Face/Coral

I’m crushing on Face/Coral ’cause I like the way it looks with my post-vacation tan. The coral blush is brighter and more intense (so it shows up easily on my skin) than its counterpart in the other palette, and the peachy gold highlighter feels RyGos smooth. The bronzer — it reminds me of my beloved NARS Laguna, but without the shimmer. You bettah rock this if you wear warm colors well.
MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: A

MAC Antonio Lopez Face/Pink
Face/Pink

I like Face/Pink, too, although the bronze-ish highlighter feels a little chunkier than I’d like. The pink blush is maybe also a tad too sheer for me, as is the bronzer, but I can totally see lighter lovelies twerkin’ this one. MAKEUP AND BEAUTY BLOG RATING: B+

Two things before I forget — I kind of wish that 1) MAC had also included another option for gals NC44 and up, since both Pink and Coral may not register well on darker skin tones; and 2) I had a unicorn to teleport me to McDonald’s right now, ’cause I’m hella hungry.

ooooh! i’m not keen on eye shadow, but the packaging art reminds me of the 80’s paintings of that chic. ugh, i can’t remember her name! tried googling it, and it’s something similar to a patrick nagel painting.

i’ll remember her name tomorrow, while doing the dishes. LoL.

i love LOVE those gold earrings! every time you wear them, i get motivated to find something similar when i’m out (window) shopping.

the looks you created where you’re wearing the grey top, and the orange top, are lovely! i’m a simple girl, so i can appreciate the green-teal-ish look, but i like the ones i mentioned 🙂

i need to get to a MAC counter, stat!

Those gold earrings are from Nordstrom from a few years back. If I ever find similar ones I’ll let you know!

Nice review! I don’t think the violet and the bronze palette are all that unique. The teal is more unique but the pigmentation should be flawless for that prize. I won’t be purchasing the face either since they can’t beat the blushes that I own in Tarte

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. I think those palettes might still be good for gals just starting out their collections. If I was a makeup newbie I would love to have palettes like these with cute packaging.

In the pic of the bronze palette the eyeshadows almost look blue on your eyes, but when I look at the bronze swatches I don’t see anything even resembling a blue shade. That’s odd.

Thanks for the review, K-Dawg! I have been lusting after teal eyes and coral face from this collection ever since I found out about it, and your review just solidified my wants/needs (same thing, right?) I also think I’m gonna go for that bright pink lip palette. I’m a sucker for limited editions and palettes, so MAC really knows how to empty my wallet!

Thanks for the amazing looks and photography Karen. I was tempted by the Teal palette but I have way too many teal eyeshadows that are not getting enough love so I will probably skip the palette. I completely agree that there should be another face palette for NC44 girls upwards. I don’t think the two face palettes will show up on me.

But, what I’m really interested in is: What gorgeous lipstick are you wearing??!?! 🙂

Naturally the most appealing shadows for me are the bronze, but they look a tad too frosty (for me). I’m interested to see your lip review because the reds in the center of your collection pic look awesome. This might finally be the season that I try a red lip. If it’s sheer. HAHA!

On a side note, I didn’t even recognize young Karl until I read the caption. And your first Antonio’s drawing reminded me immediately of Duran Duran’s Rio cover. I know it’s not that similar but it was screaming 80s to me. 🙂

HAHA! Totally. I think everyone I knew was crazy about Duran Duran. I still love their videos. I’m sure if I was seeing them for the first time, I’d have a different reaction but they’re very nostalgic. If you haven’t lately, check out Hungry Like the Wolf. Part of me wants to bust out laughing but I can’t because I remember how awesome I thought it was at the time. 🙂
