How Do You Feel About False Lashes, and Do You Have Any Application Tricks?

October 3rd, 2013 by Karen 23 Comments

I love false lashes, but because they take me forever and a day to apply, I definitely don’t wear them as often as I’d like.

What usually holds me back is time, and that’s my biggest tip. Unless you’re a false fringe expert who normally blazes through the process in 5 minutes or less, I think you have to budget extra time — in my case, at least 10 minutes — to fix things when/if they go wrong.

Sometimes it’s a last-minute decision, too, which I don’t recommend. I’ll finish an elaborate eyeshadow look on my lids and think, “False lashes would totally take this look to the next level!” So I’ll give it a try, thinking it’ll only take a few minutes.

Nope. No can do. I have to work slowly, and not under pressure from the clock. I usually need at least 10, preferably 15 minutes total, to put on a single pair, and that’s assuming everything goes according to plan.

My best tip/trick? It’s from a makeup artist friend who once suggested that I skip curling my lashes before applying falsies (thank you, Courtney!). Apparently, it’s a little easier to set false lashes on uncurled, straight lashes than on curled lashes.

Who knew?!

But if you absolutely must curl your natural lashes beforehand, just curl the tips. That way the rest of the lash shaft stays straight.

How do you feel about false lashes? Do you “go there” often? And what are your favorite false fringe tips?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hey Karen, this picture is awesome. Would you share what eyeshadow you’re wearing here?

As far as false lashes it’s still something I have never tried and it scares me to death! And I don’t even think I’d be able to put them on.

    Love your look, Karen!

I, too, am struggling with eyelash application. I seldom wear them but the easiest way I do it is to apply thin layer of eyelash glue. I follow the usual advice “wait-for-20-30-seconds-to-be-tacky”. If this fails, I retouch the glue with the Revlon Precision Lash Adhesive. Definitely the best one I tried!

I’ve only used false lashes once (for a photo shoot). They’re pretty high-maintenance for everyday, but I might splurge on a pair if I ever need to attend a fancy event/celebration! Or maybe for Halloween, if my costume calls for it. I get distracted by the lashes display at Sephora quite often, lol… 🙂 They’re so pretty, but generally not for me.
One thing I did learn from the one experience I had with false lashes – make sure you keep some glue handy when you’re out and about. A wayward strand of eyelashes poking out of your eyelid is NOT a good look.

I want the deets on the other makeup used in this look, too – especially the lips! The whole thing is killer.

It always confuses me when people say they have a hard time putting them on! Maybe I just don’t remember if it did used to be hard for me or not. But I do wear them everyday.
I’d say for tips, well the not curling your eyelashes helps, and really I don’t know what else! It’s always come naturally to me!

try using the single eye lashes. they are amazing and its so much quicker and more natural than strip lashes! now they also sell clusters or 3 singles. its so much easier! love your site!

I never wear them. I suck at applying that, and I also don’t like taking them off again. I always feel like it hurts my poor sensitive eyelids and lashes…

I don’t use them too often, ’cause sometimes I just CAN’T put them properly and it ruins my eye makeup. AND I’ve found that Santhilea Magnetic Mascara gives me a more natural look. But I still love falsies.. 😉
    Love, Gisele.

I love the single lashes, so much easier and better looking than a strip lash!! I use tweezers so its easy to navigate. Key is just let your glue dry a minute before blinking. I like to fan them. The best thing is now they sell lash trios which make it even faster! they are great. <3 Alison

I had individual lashes put on for an event once – JUST ONCE! Never again unless I have something good to remove them with. Oh what a mess I had, and the pain of getting them off – I’m fortunate enough to still have some lashes.

THat said, I keep buying the darn things in hopes of trying them. LIke you mentioned, you really need to budget extra time, maybe I’ll get a pair on this Halloween.

Please do not let Tabs get into them…^..^

I used to think I couldn’t apply falsies, that it was my lack of skill and practice – I’d thus far only tried cheap ones by H&M and Depend. Less than a year ago, though, I found Ardell lashes, and that made all the difference. They are light and flexible, so I’ll just bend them ’round a brush to make them softer, and create a shape that follows my eye better, apply DUO lash glue, and unless I’m having a bad day I just push them in place.
It takes less than half the amount of time it used to take me to apply ’em other brands, and while I always keep a tube of glue handy, I hardly ever have to repair any damage during the day.

I do love falsies because I have really small, stick straight lashes. I use the korean falsies because I think they look better with my asian eyes. I get them at the beauty counter at the korean grocery store (Darkness or Holika Holika)- super inexpensive. And 2 things that have helped in putting them on – I started using the Revlon lash glue that doesn’t have latex, so it doesn’t irritate my eyes as much and the applicator is a little brush, so easier to apply a thin even layer of the glue for less goopiness and better hold. The second thing that helped is I also bought some lash tweezers from Sephora – I don’t know about you, but my eyes freak out at the thought of anything pointy coming towards them. the lash Sephora lash tweezers have like C shaped ends that hold the whole lash strip for good control and no eyeball fits.

Application tip? Don’t. I hate applying false lashes but I’m with you, there are so many times when falsies would take my look to the next level. i seriously do hate them, though!

I love false eyelashes but I hate how long to take to put on. My other concern is about its affects on my eyes. I know they are safe but in the long run how safe is the glue so close to your eyes? What about all the tugging you so to your eyelids when putting them on and taking them off?

I use false lashes a few times a week. I don’t wear makeup everyday. I don’t know why, but it is quite easy for me. Not any longer than just using mascara (3-4 coats). My best tips…I do like to curl my lashes first. I apply mascara to them after the lashes are applied. I let the glue dry at least half way before applying. I put a little extra glue at the ends, because that is where they usually loosen up, if they do.

I would love to wear falsies, but I am so terrible at putting them on. I’ve bought some really cheap ones from E.L.F. to practice, practice, practice!

I haven’t tried using false eye lashes but I think it’s worth a try. Maybe use it for couple of conference, parties, conventions, etc. I’ve heard that most women use false eye lashes and give their eye strong and charming effect!
