What’s One Type of Makeup Look You Don’t Wear Often (or Ever)?

December 5th, 2013 by Karen 39 Comments

MAC Viva Glam Nicki 2 Lipstick
Wearing Viva Glam Nicki 2 Lipstick

Hmm…

How ’bout opaque, pastel pink lips? I hardly ever wear ’em. Actually…I never wear them, but that’s not because I don’t want to. They can look very striking and beautiful, especially on darker skin tones.

Buuuut,, I just can’t pull it off. Maybe I’m not high fashion enough.

A lot of the gals I see wearing pastel pink lips look like they just stepped off the pages of a magazine, but I feel like they make me look too cartoony, you know? Like a little girl who snuck into her my mother’s makeup bag and smeared pale pink lipstick all over her face, doh!

Plus, this one time when I was wearing MAC’s Viva Glam Nicki 2 Lipstick (an opaque cool-toned pinkish violet) and answered the door, the UPS guy said I looked like Lil’ Kim…and I’m pretty sure he was referring to the Kim way, way after the Crush on You era.

But heck, who knows? Maybe opaque pastel pink lips will be the next big thing to have a moment, like rose gold is having now, and everyone will be wearing them. I’ll just have to climb aboard the bandwagon and go with the flow.

You never know. 🙂

Your turn, buddy. What’s one type of makeup look you don’t wear often (or ever)? Spill those beans in the comments!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. Help me out here, babe. I’m trying to think of more video ideas. What kinds of videos would you like to see?

Well hello there Karen Minaj 😉 I never wear pale pastel or neon lipstick either. I also don’t often wear a very pronounced eyeliner wing. Or bronzer.

I never wear false eyelashes, not because I don’t want to but because I don’t know how to apply them.

As far as video ideas, how about a make up tutorial using Naked3?

Lmao @ Karen Minaj! Honestly, not too many people could pull off VGN2 off alone. Including me lol. I’m not the biggest fan of red lippies. It took me years to get comfortable with red lipsticks and I’ll probably never wear red gloss lol

    Hey there,

I love these new videos you are doing! Can I request a video of you putting on your makeup or a ‘Get Ready With Me Video’? I always like to see how others apply makeup and what their routine is.

    Love your posts!

I never line my waterlines. I know it looks fantastic on many gals and guys (and you, Karen!), but with my ultra fair coloring, it feels too harsh.

Good point! I don’t do that either. It just feels bad on my eyes and makes them look very round and buggy O_O

      hehe ^_^

I don’t wear lipstick very often at all. Really, I’m a lip balm person. Lipstick just doesn’t fit into that equation.

I rarely wear red or dark lipstick colors. It feels a bit too overdressed for my every day life. I’m very much a neutrals gal when it comes to lip color.

    Ideas for videos…

    – Since it’s nearing Christmas, maybe a gift guide for guys? Possibly with skin care or shaving products he might not necessarily buy for himself. My husband loves the shaving products from Lab Series and Anthony.

    – Basic, easy products to purchase for someone who is just getting started with makeup.

    – Favorite, holy grail products you’ve purchased multiple times.

    – How to win the battle against cat hair. 🙂 Just kidding, that battle is never won! However, I would love see Tabs make an appearance. Perhaps a “day in the life” video of an international kitty model. I’m guessing there is a lot of beauty sleep involved!

I won’t do nude lips. I know everyone loves that with a smokey eye, but I am just looking like death when I try to do it. Not a good look. Videos? I would love some tutorials, please! Gradients, blending tips, how to do a perfect cat eye flick/wing, false eyelash application and removal for beginners. ANything eye makeup related, tutorial wise. Also a holiday gifting pick video would be good. Especially guy gifts or beauty gifts for the makeup shy/beginner. If any of the counters will let you film, I’d love to see an on location video segment someday. The Bobbi Brown seminar would have made a great one, or the Nars boutique opening.

Hmmm… I’d have to say smoky eyes and dark colors on my waterline. It just doesn’t look right with fair skin and invisi-lashes.

I never wear lip gloss. I don’t like the way it looks on me, I hate the way it feels… just no. I’ll probably lose my beauty junkie street cred for that.

I also don’t like wearing anything too opaque on my lips, except a red lip once in a great while. I have a freckle I kind of like on my lips, so I’d rather wear sheer things – tinted balm, stains, sheer lippies…

I don’t do really dark eyes either. It doesn’t look right on me.

    I don’t:

    – wear pastel/very light pink lip color, it makes my teeth look yellow 😛

    – line my waterline, it makes my eyes look small and beady, that in turn makes my mouth and nose look HUGE. Not a good look I’m going for LOL.

    – wear very light pastel colored eyeshadow. It makes me look sick and washed out! I can pull it off it is paired with a darker shadow, like if the pastel is only on the inner corners, or right in the middle of my lid, but if I wear it all over, EW.

    -pale blue-toned pink lipticks
    -concealer nude lips
-an eyeshadow look made out of multiple bright colors (lsd trip on my eyelids, kind of)
-really bright or dark lips (these ones I do like, but I only wear them on occasion, because I would feel uncomfortable in them at the university or work)

I don’t do bright/hot fuschia lips very often. I just think my lip size combined with my skin tone makes those violently-blue-pinks look kinda tacky on me. I have nothing against the color, but if I’m going to make a statement on my lips, I’ll choose true reds, hot mid-tonal pinks, or vampy plums! Also, I don’t fill in my lower waterlines much anymore. It was ALL I did in my teens, but now I see how it closes up my eyes. So if I attempt it at all, I’m very delicate about it. What else… blue shadows. I have blue eyes, and while I still enjoy the pure artistry of incorporating a blue shadow or liner every now and then (even if it means less of a pop for my own peepers), I mostly avoid it. I don’t want to look silly or clowny! The Sabbath liner by UD is an exception- it’s so perfectly deep navy and matte that I have no reservations about it at all.

I never wear a smokey eye look. Not because I don’t like it, on the contrary, but I haven’t mastered it yet. Here’s hoping I can acquire that skill bc I have the perfect nude Lipton compliment that look. I’d love makeup tutorials on how you apply your makeup. It ALWAYS looks great ☺️

HAHA Nikki Minaj was my first thought as well! 😀

As for what I don’t wear, hmm… big makeup n00b here (beyond my old five minute a day slap on some eye liner & mascara look, that is) so lots of looks I’ve not been brave enough to try quite yet. 😉

I would love to see a video of how you store all your makeup & such. I’ve enrolled to several subscription beauty boxes and those items, along with all my recent purchases, and the assorted samples that come with each, are becoming a bit of a jumbled pile. (Never let it be said I go into a new project halfheartedly!! LOL)

I so wish I could pull off peachy corals and pinky corals, like MAC Vegas Volt.
I never ever wear light lips, as in Nicki Viva Glam 2. Saw it at the MAC store and didnt even bother to swatch it. I also never wear super dark lips, to be honest I’ve never tried it out, I always forget to buy a dark lip color and end up buying something bright. Darkest I’ve gone is MAC Dubonnet.

After becoming more adventurous with my beauty routine, there’s not much I won’t try at least once! I still don’t feel mega confidant in bright lip colors because my lips are pretty big and they look kinda loco (to me) in electric/neon colors. I second the Get Ready With Me video! I’d love to see your regular, every day makeup routine for those runs to Trader Joe’s! And I wouldn’t be mad if Tabs had a cameo. 🙂

A very bright lipstick. I have really fleshy lips, and those lipsticks make them look bigger 🙁 too bad, because I would love some bright coral o fuchsia lips.

ALSO: ultra-thin eyebrows. I haaaaaaaaate the look. It also makes my big eyes look bigger ._. (everything in my face is too big, it seems)

I’m very pale but my lips are red naturally. Pale colors on my lips make me look washed out, and sometimes the color of my lips will shine through… Not a nice look, haha.
I mostly go for colors that create a contrast with my skin color! 🙂
