How To Get Big, Bouncy Curls

January 8th, 2014 by Karen 17 Comments

I’ve gotten a few requests for a video on the curly hairstyle I wear a lot in pics, so here goes.

Best (or at least my favorite) part about this style is that it’s easy. All you really need is a curling iron and some hairspray (and a sense of adventure!).

OOH! And get this: after you curl your hair, you can probably keep the same style for a couple (or few) days if you don’t wash your mop.

It’s the ultimate in lazy girl hairstyling. 🙂

Products mentioned in the video

  • Revlon Perfect Heat Styling Iron 1-1/2″ ($16)
  • Pureology Colour Stylist Fortifying Heat Spray ($26)
  • Tresemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray ($5)
  • Pantene Pro-V Touchable Non-Aerosol Hairspray Flexible Hold ($4)

Thank you for watching! Hope you’re having a great night.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. That’s NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Yu on my lips, in case you were wondering.

Oh Karen honey…love you, love your videos! Sadly, the only way my hair will ever have bounce is if I got my DNA rearranged. Both of my parents had thin, skimpy hair and so do I. Go figure?! I loved them both, miss them lots, and maybe I need to remember that I got lots of good from them whenever I complain about my hair. In the meantime, you go on wit your bad self and rock the curls for us both! 🙂

You have THE most gorgeous, thick, strong, glossy hair. So jealous!

Perfect timing, I just bought a curling iron that size because my hair is long again for the first time since 2005 (https://scontent-b-atl.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/1470352_10100895540756523_278066035_n.jpg is a photo from Thanksgiving when I dyed it pink). I used hot rollers when I wanted this look as a teen, but they’re a pain. I can’t wait to try the little tips you gave. Though my hair certainly won’t hold this look for days (it will hold tighter curls that way).

Thank you for doing that tutorial Karen, I was one of the people who requested it. I have the same iron sitting in my closet because I don’t know how to use it. I will have to take it out, watch your video and try to curl my hair along. We will see how it goes!
Btw, that lipstick looks gorgeous on you!

Ooooh bouuuncy! Those curls really look fabulous. But while I’m glad this works for you, I am pretty sure I could never get my hair to look like that. My hair lacks density and volume for that, and the power to hold curl 🙁

Thanks for the tutorial! (: Unfortunately, my hair does not hold a curl (just like my darn eyelashes). I’ve used hot rollers, curling irons, and even had it done at salons for special occasions, but it always, always falls flat within a few hours. Boo. I have heard from others also, that dirty hair does hold a curl better, I just can’t bring myself to not wash my hair everyday lol. Perhaps someday!

Your hair is gorgeous! Mine is so flat and, unfortunately, it never holds a curl. 🙁

Heh, if I want a curl to stay in my hair for more than 30 seconds, I’d have to use something industrial that’s probably banned in 50 countries. And even then it’d only last for a minute!

My hair is resolutely straight – it has the suggestion of a ‘wave’ in it in the sense that it isn’t poker straight, but the wavelength is pretty long!

FINALLY! I saw one of your videos. You do GREAT! I hope you see this because I almost bought you a pair of leggings today at Target. THey had freakin’ flying cats all over them. I stopped in my tracks and said, “Karen would LERVE these” LMAO. Good thing I don’t have your address or we’d all need pics.

You are so smashingly beautiful! I love how you “picture” a person to act then are totally surprised to hear them talk, etc. That was my “ah ha!” moment for you when I watched the video. lol.

during the recession, I lost my job and after over a year I lost hope, had a Britney moment and chopped off my hair. I finally have grown my hair mid-back and look forward to making it look “pretty”. my favorite stain is the Strawberry Sugar BTW!

Your hair is gorgeous! Natural and curled. Just curious, is it okay to pair a warm blush with a cool toned lip? It looks like that’s what you’ve done but I feel like I’m blush blind, can’t tell if the blush is warm or cool toned once buffed into the skin. Only asking because I love macs girl about town but I love warm blushes, I feel cool blushes look wonky on me lol.

Karen, you are the most like able beauty blogger! You are hilarious, witty, and helpful. And you love cats. ok, gush over 🙂 This is basically how I do my hair every few days. I like how it holds up, since I only wash twice per week.

Thanks Karen for this amazing tutorial! Guess results depend on your hair type as well, my curls can hold for up to 3 days after styling!

    P.S: love your blog’s design!!!

I love that curling iron! I use it to give my chin length hair tons of bounce and volume. And since my hair is really delicate, it’s great that it has so many heat settings.
