How To Do a Basic Brown Smokey Eye

February 24th, 2014 by Karen 33 Comments

Please ignore the Christmas decorations behind my shoulder, LOL! I filmed this back in December before Christmas but then got too carried away with the holidays to prepare it.

I still wanted to finish it, though, because it’s a staple look of mine that I wear all year round, perfect for just about any occasion from work things to movie dates to running errands around town.

I make little tweaks to it all the time, but this time I paired the eyes with nude cheeks and lips. You could always opt for more dramatic colors to brighten it up.

Here’s the final look…

There are some steps and layering involved, but I’m sure you can do it. If you haven’t tried something like this before, it just takes a little practice.

Full list of products mentioned in the video…

  • MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance
  • MAC Face & Body Foundation in C5
  • NARS Pure Radiant Concealers in Ginger and Caramel (I mix these two together to create a custom shade)
  • MAC Brun Eye Shadow
  • NARS Pro-Prime Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base
  • MAC Bamboo Eye Shadow
  • Dolce & Gabbana No. 10 Chocolate Crayon Intense Eyeliner
  • NARS Coconut Grove
  • MAC Mulch Eye Shadow
  • NARS Galapagos
  • MAC A Natural Flirt (you could also use something like MAC Shroom or Ricepaper)
  • MAC Smolder Eye Kohl
  • MAC Prep + Prime in Bright Forecast
  • MAC Pro Longwear Concealer
  • MAC Lightsweep Shaping Powder
  • MAC Costa Riche Eye Kohl
  • Clarins Be Long Mascara
  • Chanel Natural Finish Loose Powder
  • MAC Mineralize Skinfinish in Give Me Sun
  • MAC Autoerotique Mineralize Blush
  • MAC Fairly Precious Mineralize Skinfinish
  • MAC Close Contact Lipstick
  • MAC Overspiced Lipglass
  • Sigma E54 Medium Sweeper
  • Sigma F35 Tapered Highlighter is the brush similar to the MAC one I used to set the concealer with Lightsweep

And here’s that brow tutorial I mentioned…

I hope you enjoy. Thank you so much for watching. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

      Hi Arianne,

Okay, you want to know something funny? He always has this weird knack of making a fuss the moment a video camera or a mic gets turned on. It’s like he has a sixth sense for grabbing attention. He’s divalicious that way. 🙂

IMO, once a makeup wearer gets their own customized smokey brown eye look on point, they’re ready for anything, dressed up or down. Nars Galapagos e/s is my first Nars e/s and still my Nars favorite (tied with Taj Mahal).

      Hi Erica,

Gotta love Galapagos. Do you ever wear it wet? It’s super pretty, especially as a liner.

      Happy Monday, btw!

Thank you so much for both of these videos! I used the brow one today to try doing my brows for the very first time 🙂 Came out looking good!

The smoky eye is lovely – I really like brown smokey eyes, as you can kind of get away with them during the day as well! Well, maybe not on my vampire skintone, but I like them anyway 🙂

I recently splurged on the NARS And God Created Woman set. It’s my first time playing with Galapagos and Coconut Grove. My face can’t handle the intensity that you can pull off, but with those two colors, I can create a smoky eye “light.”

so that is how to get your super blended, amazeballs eye looks. i will have to try this sometimes. i will probably need a whole hour to do this but if i can get half the look that you got, it’d be worth it.

I appreciate the video but the thing that struck me the most was how long it was and how long you must be spending on your look. A blended brown eyeshadow is also my go-to look for daytime (if I wear makeup) and… I see you blending, and blending, and blending. I do my best but I can tell if something looks bad on me, it’s because I didn’t blend enough. This proves it. You look good because you blend. I am also astonished by the number of products you use (makeup and brushes). I acknowledge that you look perfect afterwards, but there’s no way in hell I’m ever going to use blush, bronzer, and highlighter on a normal day. I am not that glamorous I guess. Don’t get me wrong Karen, your beauty blog is my favorite. You’re relatable, you live in the bay (I used to), you have brown hair and eyes like me. But this video was a real eye opener. I will never be glamorous during the day if this performance indicates what it takes… cause I don’t got it.

Hi Karen – just wanted to say how much I loved your tutorial. I have tried, unsuccessfully the smokey eyed look and ended up looking like I had done a couple of rounds with Mike Tyson! I’m looking forward to trying this one and the effect looks beautiful on you.
