Ask MBB: Gel or Liquid Outlines for Cat Eyeliner?

March 7th, 2014 by Karen 16 Comments

Still clawing and scratching for a way to work more MRRRROW into your huntress cat eyeliner looks? Today might meow your day. 🙂

This is the first installment in a new video series I’m starting called Ask MBB. If you have a question you’d like to see answered in an upcoming installment (of course, Tabs will help), drop it down below in the comments here or on YouTube.

Today’s installment tackles a question about cat liner technique and when to use a gel or liquid to build out your look.

Products mentioned…

  • MAC Fluidline in Blacktrack
  • NARS Eye Paint in Black Valley
  • L’Oreal Infallible Gel Lacquer Liner in Blackest Black

I hope you find it useful. Thank you for watching!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

With little lid space and semi-deep set eyes I’m never able to pull off a cat eye quite right. Maybe I just need to see a professional!

I’d love to see a tutorial on cat-liner for different eye-types! I’m sure there’s probably one out there, but it just occurred to me when reading this post…

I like cat liner, preferably with liquid, but it’s not something I do particularly often, for some reason.

This is such a great idea, Karen!

This is probably a super basic question, but I’ll ask anyway because I’m curious! How long do you wait to apply your foundation after applying moisturizer and facial primer? I really want to add primer to my daily makeup routine (just bought Mac Prep+Prime Skin Base Visage), but I don’t have a lot of time to get ready in the mornings, so I’m wondering if I’ll even have time to add primer.

Thanks for all of your wonderful blog posts, Karen! I always look forward to reading them!

Love this! I don’t do a lot of cat flicks as I don’t think it’s a great match for my eye shape, but for liner in general I do prefer the control of gel liner over liquids. I totally agree that liquids are less forgiving! Thanks for this, I really enjoy hearing you talk about makeup issues/questions.

Liquid liner is just easier to glide into that cat eye quick and easy. Gel and pencil are good for smudging or just simple lining for me at least;)

I prefer gel. Most liquid liner brushes are too flimsy for me. Gel is the easiest formula for me to work with when it comes to doing a cat eye

Gel eye-liners are way convenient than liquid liners!

I love Tabs’s comments! I don’t do cat eyes as often as I used to, and I used to use liquid pretty much exclusively. However, you do run into the problem of it being less forgiving, definitely. My hands have gotten shaky because of a medication I take, so now gel can definitely be better.

I am trying to figure out which is a good liquid liner to use that is both good and affordable. I currently am using pencil with varying degrees of success. Any one have suggestions? Let me know, I’d appreciate the help.

I use both!Liquid liner by Marc Jacobs, and the Sephora brand, which I love. They have reformulated the Sephora brand, recently, and I don’t like it anymore, so I bought the Marc Jacobs liquid and pencil that is a gel liner.
I have to say that the gel pencil is absolutely the best! It is super black,smudge-proof, and long lasting. I use UD eye primer, so I am sure that helps!

I can’t do a cat’s eye either. But, my FAVORITE eyeliner is Urban Decay 24/7. I have it in A LOT of colors, and want more, more, more! They glide on so creamy and then become budgeproof. Even swimming! Nothing removes them other than oil base remover! Which I have a ton of too, since I use waterproof mascara, lipstains, and waterproof foundations (Revon Colorstay is my favorite, although I use Estee Lauder Dual Wear and Covergirl too!)

I find liquid quicker and easier as you just have to do a quick flick then glide so it takes less than a minute for each eye.
