Massive Monday Flower Power and Monstrous Deck Garden Progress!

March 17th, 2014 by Karen 20 Comments

I can’t believe I’m saying this right now because it’s Home Depot we’re talking about, and El Hub can spend hours — HOURS! — looking at PVC pipes and 2x4s (seriously, that man can contemplate nails and power tools for DAYS), but last weekend I had so much fun at Home Depot.

First, I actually found a like-minded makeup-loving gal working there who wanted to talk about makeup. I was posting up in the power tools section babysitting El Hub’s cart when one of the sales associates walked by and complimented me on my shoes (I was wearing Tom’s flats).

The shoes led to makeup because, of course, all roads inevitably lead to makeup, LOL! And we chatted about blush for a while in the shadow of the circular saws…

Funny. 🙂

Then I wandered into the lawn and garden department, which was off the hook! It was like a country-sized botanical garden in a fairytale movie. There must have been tens of thousands of different plants.

I ended up with a cart filled with foliage (and, yes, El Hub got some lumber) for the garden on my deck.

I can’t wait to go back…

Here’s part of what I have on the deck so far. There’s a little more stuff on the other side, but I still have a ways to go… Gotta get some more cages for more tomatoes and more edible plants.

Any suggestions? I want plants that produce a lot of food.

My parents have a little garden in their backyard and the highest yielding plant is easily zucchini. My mom always complains to me that she’s sick of eating zucchini!

You take the most beautiful nature pics! It’s nice that you found someone to keep you company in Home Depot because that store is such a snorefest

    Hi Karen,

It looks beautiful. Get some courgettes (zucchini?). They’re really easy to grow in a pot and they produce loads 🙂

Such beautiful flowers! Go ahead and plant zucchini or summer squash(those are yellow). You’ll have lots of good eatin’ and probably get to know your neighbors better because you’ll have a lot to share!

Looks great! You can plant pretty much anything you like in a pot/planter. My mom plants a huge garden every summer with all kinds of veggies. How about some romaine or kale for a salad?

hey! try planting some herbs (i dunno what kinds are good for california), all of the ones i’ve planted up in canada, like mint and parsley, have had fantastic yields and are like, impossible, to kill!

Maybe an eggplant or two? most people don’t eat a lot of eggplant, but they are so pretty, and just one or two of them would probably keep you supplied! I’m SO looking forward to spring this year… It was a coldish, *dry* winter here, and if we don’t get some rain this spring, it’s gonna be a hot, *dry* spring/summer…. On the plus side, I have daffodils coming up and some little crocus that are actually BLOOMING! YAY!!!

wow the flowers are so pretty! i have large yard with some fruits, right now it’s avocado harvest time. been eating avocado shakes and making guacamoles…

another that we can’t live without is our scatter of chili bushes, the small hot thai-chili types. they breed like rabbits, in 3 months you’ll have your own stash, and they are pretty when ripe red/orange…

How pretty! It looks healthy and gorgeous. Have any of you ever tried growing cherry tomatoes? Talk about prolific! There’s nothing better than eating a handful of just picked cherry tomatoes warm from the sun. They produce loads!

Home Depot has some great flowers. Those are pretty pics! I just got an orchid in the Pantone Orchid color from Home Depot, and so far it’s doing well. You would probably like an orchid! Home Depot is dangerous for me…I always come out with something from there!

Zucchini for sure. They are easy to grow and you are likely have to produce way more than you want to eat.

Japanese Eggplant, but it can be finicky to grow. I have never frown them in a container which is another factor, but they produce like crazy if you get them going.

    Sweet peppers.
