Lychee or Dragon Eggs? Hard To Tell…

August 11th, 2014 by Karen 15 Comments

For real though, this site is two, maybe three posts away from being renamed “Makeup and Food Blog,” or “Makeup and All of the Things My Goat-Like Stomach Likes to Consume.”

That second one rolls off the tongue better, methinks…

Today, it’s lychee. 🙂 I picked these up from Trader Joe’s yesterday.

If you haven’t had a lychee before, it’s a sweet pitted fruit with a crusty dragon skin-like outer shell.

The fleshy fruit tastes like a cross between a watermelon and a peach to me. Just peel, plop one in your mouth, and spit out the seed.

I could seriously eat these things all day long…especially when they’re cold.

Have you ever had lychee before? How about lychee shave ice or ice cream?

I love lychees! Can’t say the same about peeling them because of the rough skin (and my sensitive eczema fingers) but once I get the hubs on peeling duty, it’s a good day! haha

    Hi Karen,

I love the smell of lychees!

The difference between lychees and dragon eyes is their skin texture: lychees have bumpy skin and dragon eyes/longans have a smooth skin 🙂

My mom loves lychees but the first time she brought some home I didn’t feel like trying them but when I tried them, I loved them! They are also great in cocktails!

Wow – those are some big lychees! I’ve only had them in restaurants when they’ve been pre-peeled (which I’m totally not complaining about). They’re yummy but they taste, to me, like a cross between fruit and a green olive. There was a bit of tang in the ones I had. 🙂

Lychee martinis are the best form of lychee in my opinion!!

I love lychees! Haven’t had lychee in awhile though.
I saw them in my local TJ a couple of weeks ago, but noped out of it. I couldn’t bear paying $4 (or is it $5?) for such a measly amount of lychees. Asian prices had spoiled me :p

Hi Karen! Lychees are so yummy! Ever had lychee wine or lychee liquor? I love it (and I barely drink alcohol)!

      Hi ScarlieC,

I never have! Is it sweet? I love a good sweet white wine, especially when it’s chilled.

To me, they’re a little funky tasting, lol. I tried lychee ice cream when I was in China Town in NYC, and it was a memorable experience (and not necessarily in a great way).

      Hi Lauren,

I guess they can taste kinda funky at first. The fresh ones are much better than canned or the kind you get in ice cream…you have to try one! Who knows, you might like it more than the ice cream.

Lychee love!! I go to Kauai every year & buy them fresh from the farmers markets. I ate so many this year it was nuts!! I was able to try a couple different types this year. Amazing fruit.
