What Was the Last DIY or Homemade Hair, Makeup or Beauty Product You Made and Used?

August 18th, 2014 by Karen 19 Comments

Remember how I said my lips were painfully windburned and chapped from that four-hour marathon kayaking mis-adventure on Lake Tahoe a little over a week ago? Well, I made a homemade sugar and olive oil lip scrub for them last weekend, and yay! — now they’re almost back to normal.

I mixed a little olive oil and some granulated sugar into a thick paste. (I didn’t really pay attention to how much I used of each. I pretty much just eyeballed it.) Then I rubbed that on my lips.

Sometimes when I do this I use an old toothbrush to buff the paste on my lips like an exfoliator.

But this time I just used my fingers…

It works great! And it’s super cheap, too. Plus, if you want to, you can lick the leftovers off your lips instead of rinsing, LOL!

I’m just sayin… 🙂

How about you? What was the last DIY or homemade hair, makeup or beauty product you made and used? (I would not turn down any recipes if you have them.)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I do the same sugar scrub, except I use coconut oil. Yummy!

I have a few things. Body scrubs – both sugar and salt scrubs made with olive oil and/or coconut. I also have some lip scrub that I made and use both on my face and on my lips. It lives in the shower. My favorite has to be the toner I made. This stuff truly works!!! I especially love it made with homemade rose water instead of regular water. http://shwinandshwin.blogspot.com/2010/10/skin-brightening-toner.html?m=1

Gram flour + pinch of turmeric + tea spoon milk to make a paste and scrubbed my face! exfoliation – check, antibacterial – check, glow – check!

That sounds like a homemade version of Lush’s lip scrub. I’ll have to try it out. I make a tightening anti aging facemask using turmeric. I can’t remember the exact ingredients as it’s been a while. There’s a post on it over on my blog.

I made a very similar lip scrub a few months back, except that I also added honey. Not sure of it’s purpose, but I know honey is a natural humectant so I believe it increases the moisture retention. Works like a charm.

Also, for Christmas I gave out mason jars with homemade citrus sugar scrubs. I also made the mason jar that held the scrub into a mini lamp using ribbon, mini lamp shades, & tea lights. What can I say? I’m a DIY’er.

    To be honest, I don’t think I’ve ever DIY’ed anything beauty-related…

I do the same thing for my hands when they get horribly dry. The last mixture I did though was probably witch hazel, coconut oil, and water as a makeup remover.

My 7 year old daughter and I made crayon lipstick last weekend – it was a complete success!!! Today we are making hand scrub with sugar and dish detergent as 1st day of school teacher gifts.

I take coconut oil that is still firm and whip it with a mixer for a few minutes so it gets light and airy, them I use that as a moisturizer. Smells great and works great!

I don’t think I’ve ever done a DIY treatment but I like the sound of your sugar scrub. Do you think we could get the same results with sugar cookie dough? 😉

I mix coconut oil with a few drops of lavender oil, peppermint oil, rosemary oil, and sometimes teatree oil for a pre-wash hair mask that I apply from root to tip. I just need to make sure. Rinse it out thoroughly!

After I take off my nail polish, I like to mix together olive oil and salt and rub the mixture all over my hands to exfoliate and smooth them. It feels good, too – the way your feet feel when you walk on sand at the beach!

I use straight up olive oil as nail treatment/cuticle oil most days!

Its been a while since I did something like this! Going to try a lip/body scrub tonight. And I’m going to add a bit of ground cinnamon in it too 😛 Love the scent of cinnamon!

I tend to make my own face oils, I think it is really fun to tweak the formula so that it is PERFECT for me – there always tends to be something that is a bit off with the ones you buy (also cray cray expensive IMO)

Last one I made which was pretty darn good was a mix of sweet almond, jojoba, argan, vitamin E and some lemon and ceder

I make a lot of DIY products. Most of it is skincare – masks with certain clays and oils. Also, vitamin c masks using ascorbic acid powder and certain oils. I currently have some dry spots so last night I did my super hydrating mask with plain Greek yogurt and organic raw honey. I’ve also made my own hair oil treatments, and cream shadows and blushes.

I like to mix coconut oil and Jamaican black castor oil as a pre-poo treatment for my hair. It’s a really great mix too! It makes my hair shiny and super soft
