For a Plush Pout, Call 1-800-NARS Velvet Lip Liner

August 20th, 2014 by Karen 18 Comments

NARS Nihiwatu Velvet Lip Liner
Wearing the new NARS Velvet Lip Liner in Nihiwatu ($24)

Ooh! shiny…

But not shiny like the sparkling mega twinkle of Ryan Gosling’s smile. More like the shiny finish of a classic Chanel flap bag — ideally one in black leather with gold hardware (that’s a hint, El Hub, in case we win the $160 million Mega Millions jackpot this week).

Um…please excuse my crazy hair and lack of makeup today, LOL! I literally put this face on in five minutes before snapping these pics (it’s a long story, but it has to do with tomorrow and a certain long-running American cartoon).

Thanks to a slight sheen, these new $24 NARS Velvet Lip Liners (which are awesomely named after beaches!) pop in a way that matte lip liners don’t. The velvety finish reflects just enough light to be eye-catching. Because of it, you could probably even wear them alone and skip lipstick altogether if you wanted a long-wearing lip color that you didn’t have to touch up throughout the day.

And thanks to the smooth, lightweight formula, they don’t kick up any flakes on my troubled lips, either, which are still recovering from that frickin’ kayak trip two weeks ago. They feel gentler than a nose tap from my favorite plus-size tabby. 🙂

You know how with some lip liners it feels like you made out with a thick layer of dry, one-week-old pie crust?

Yeah…these don’t feel at all like that.

Of the 12 shades, I like peachy pink nude Waimea, hot pink Costa Smeralda and red Nihiwatu (up there at the top) the most. They’re the ones I’m wearing here.

So here is my makeup confession: I don’t own a single lip liner in my collection. These might change that though. Costa Smeralda looks so pretty on you.

Making out with a one week old dry pie crust? Really, Karen…what do you do in your spare time? 😛

I’ve been testing the waters of two types of products I am unfamiliar with – pigments and lip liners. The launch of Velvet Lip Liners came at a really good time!

Apparently I spend it thinking of weird things, haha! 🙂

Lipliner changed my life when I started wearing it about a year ago. I bought 5 colors from Urban Decay because I liked their selection and had read good things. I might have to try a couple of these!

Karen, is this the Laura Mercier foundation you recently reviewed? I think you look great and I think your looks cute back! But please lmk what you’re wearing on your face, eyes, and cheeks.

      Hi Amanda,

Yes it is. I LOVE THAT FOUNDATION. It is a game changer!

I’m really not wearing much in these pics at all. Here’s a quick list…

      MAC Brun Eye Shadow (brows)
MAC Prep + Prime Natural Radiance (all over face primer)
Laura Mercier Smooth Finish Flawless Fluide Foundation
MAC Pro Longwear Concealer mixed with MAC Care Blends Essential Oils in Grapefruit + Camomile (under eyes)
NARS Matte Multiple in Mauritanie (apples of cheeks)
NARS Multiple in Laguna (bridge of nose, upper cheekbones…if you’re lighter than me, this will look more like a bronzer on you)
Hourglass 1.5MM liner (upper water line)
Giorgio Armani Black Ecstasy Mascara (upper and lower lashes)

I seriously banged this out in 5 minutes. Super easy!

So nice to see other people use weird metaphors! Makes me feel at home, and you know, not an oddball writer nut 😀
These look perfect. I’m a lipstick addict but I’ve been looking for a long lasting colour that doesn’t pull a Sahara number on my lips. These look kind of perfect!
I wonder if they still stay with lip balm underneath?

I like the finish of the NARS Velvet stuff, too. I have one of their Velvet Gloss lip pencils and I don’t love the color but I do like the formula. And thanks for making me want to go to Hawaii even more. Jumping off that rock looks AWESOME!!!

The Sheer Matte foundation was both my first NARS product AND my first Sephora purchase. I just hit pan on my 3rd Laguna bronzer! NARS is my first true love, and I love that they (he? lol) continues to release high quality products.

Thank you for this lovely review! Tell me, do any of these liners seem like they would go well with Nars Volga lipstick?
Lanikai, perhaps? or Mirihi Island Beach?
