Reader Poll: What’s the Best Concealer (or Combination of Products) for Dark Under-Eye Circles?

September 10th, 2014 by Karen 51 Comments

Another way to cover dark circles...
Another way to cover dark circles…

You probably already know which one I’m currently using to disguise the permanent purple half moon residents living underneath my eyes (seriously, I should charge them rent) because I regularly shout it from the rafters, but for the cheap seats in the back, it’s MAC Pro Longwear Concealer.

It’s a full-coverage liquid concealer that comes in a glass bottle, so it’s a little fragile, and it has a pump dispenser, which isn’t always easy to use (I squirt too much!).

I usually mix it with MAC Careblends Grapefruit + Chamomile Essential Oil (I do about a 50/50 ratio of each) to sheer Pro Longwear out a little, because of how pigmented it is. I love MAC Pro Longwear by itself, but for me, mixing it with the oil helps to keep it from camping in my fine lines and makes the coverage look even more natural, and not as heavy.

I love this combo, but I’m always looking for a better option…because I can’t stand Pro Longwear’s pump. If you have a recommendation for an end-all, be-all under-eye concealer that’s been rocking your world, please share. My dark circles and I beg you. 🙂

What’s your pick for the best under-eye concealer (or combination of products) for dark under-eye circles?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I don’t have a huge under eye problem but I find the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer very very natural and brightening!

At the moment I’ve been using Laura Mercier Secret Concealer. Since they extended their shade range, shade 3.7 is perfect (I was always between 3 and 4!!!). I also like Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer but lately I’ve been favouring the LM.

Karen, have you (or Tabs) ever tried Meow Cosmetics? They’re an indie brand and their Undereye Concealer is the bomb.com! And bonus – it comes in LOTS of shades, so it was easy to find my match. 🙂

I use Make Up For Ever’s Full Coverage Concealer. I have come back to it a couple of times after trying something else, though I’m still not 100% satisfied with it. For a brief time I used Bobbi Brown’s concealer and corrector which REALLY settled into my fine lines and looked just awful at the end of the day. The MUFE concealer luckily stays where I put it.

This is what I always feel T_T Especially since I’m so pale and no undereye concealer is ever really within cooee of my skintone… I like the Touche Eclat pen for brightening, but…it’s not really a concealer!

I always end up feeling too that if I use enough concealer to actually erase my dark circles, I have to cake the rest of my face with an inch thick layer of foundation to look even. Which, for me, is a big no no…

Nars Radiant Concealer has been a life changer for me!! I have panda eyes and nothing ever really covered my dark purple/green and stood crease-less all day. I apply 5 dabs under each eye in a triangle, blend with my Beauty Blender (have you seen the tiny ones BTW?!) and set with Anastasia’s banana color from her Contour Kit. Looks bright and smooth ALL day.

Bobbi Brown Corrector + Mac Mineralize Concealer is a close second.

Most days I can get away with just MAC mineralize concealer, but when I need extra strength I layer Bobbi Brown corrector underneath. The peach helps cancel out my deep blue circles.

I’ve tried many different concealers and color correctors for the darkness on my inner corners near the bridge of my nose, and right now I’m loving NYX Dark Circle Concealer – it works really well (applied with a concealer brush), and it’s a great price, so no complaints there!

I use a combo of the MAC Pro Longwear Concealer and the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind Dark Circle Eraser in the Brightening shade. Oh, and Zyrtec. Because most of my dark circle loveliness is caused by allergies. Aaaaa-choooo!! My only complaint about the MAC is that I really don’t need a full pump of product. Too much waste!

Personally, I am a big fan of MAC’S “Select Cover Up” that I apply with my 217 MAC brush to really set it and blend it easily. Due to the fact that this feels quite drying for me, I first apply Benefit’s “Fake Up” to get some moisture on those dark circles and a light coverage and after apply “Select Cover Up” to fully conceal.

My skintone is deep (caramel) and I have super dark circles. I use Dermablend Quick Fix Concealer. It comes in a stick (like lipstick) and it covers EVERYTHING. I set it with powder foundation and it lasts all day, with no settling in the creases. It also contains SPF 30 and comes in 10 shades.

I really love the Tarte maracuja creaseless concealer. I warm it up a little in my fingers and dab on, then blend out with a beauty blender or brush. Sometimes it creases a bit right away…I blend it again, set with powder and it’s perfect all day!

I had horrible luck with the Nars creamy concealer…it didn’t go on smoothly for me and looked patchy near the inner corners of my eyes, even if I put eye cream on just before! I’ve also heard good things about the It Cosmetices bye bye undereye.

My favorite combo now is Nars Radiate creamy concealer I use two colors ,Caramel and Amande together. I stopped using any kind of setting powder cause it emphasized fine lines under my eyes. I went into a MAC store a while ago trying to get a good concealer. After a lot of tries I got 2 pro longwear concealers NW40( too dark) and NC42(too light) they look ok together. I agree the pump puts out way too much product!! Being a WOC I struggle with getting the right shade of concealer, unfortunately I have a makeup bag full of concealers I can’t wear!Still looking for the holy grail!

I never found a concealer that I liked (especially at its pricepoints), so I tend to use foundation that’s a shade lighter. I use the Pixi foundation at the moment — it’s creamy, full coverage, and very moisturizing — and stays all day!

Givenchy Mister Light. I am a machinist, so my makeup has some tough conditions to stand up to. Not to mention, I work night shift so under-eye circles are a constant companion. This pen works for me and my skintone. When I work a hard twelve hour shift it lasts about eight.

It cosmetics bye bye under eye or tarte creaseless. Both have a correcting and brightening effect which is a must have for this tired mamas eyes. I like Mac Pro long wear but it’s just not enough (maybe when the kids are older:). Amazing cosmetics is good but I find the it and tarte ones a touch drier and less prone to creasing.

The concealer combo that’s worked best for me so far is applying Benefit’s Boi-ing and setting it with the Bare Minerals Broad Spectrum Concealer. The powder makes it look more natural & prevents creases.

And I’m not sure if I picked the wrong shade, but the Maybelline Instant Age Rewind actually made my dark circles look worse!

For me, the concealer(s) I use all depends on how out of hand my under eye area happens to be that day (I always have some amount of circles, though, as they’re inherited for me). On any regular day? I prep w/ smash box’s under eye moisturizing concealer (wait a few mins) and then go in with 3 of the Nars Radiant Creamy concealers (biscuit to cancel out the bluest areas, honey over that and on the majority of the under eye area, and custard near the lashing for extra brightening). I set w/ a little fan brush and clinique’s almost powder.

For particularly rough mornings, I’ll prep with benefit’s It’s Potent eye cream first (let that hang out a sec), do my Nars routine, and then follow that with dabs of Benefit’s erase paste where needed. On rough days I set w/ Ben nye’s yellow (I think it’s called banana) powder, using a little fan.

I LOVE the EL Double Wear concealer. It doesn’t crease at all and their color range is fantastic. If my circles are super bad, I’ll throw some Chantecaille concealer (the one in the jar) just at the bottom of the circles, to blend in with the rest of my skin. I also happen to like to LM under eye concealer that Karen didn’t have such a great experience with – but I find that the tiniest drop with cover under both eyes with super full coverage and it doesn’t crease for me. HG.

Mac prep and prime vibrancy eye and prolongwear concealer on top of it. Most of the time that is enough, but when I need more coverage, then MAC studio finish orange corrector underneath the concealer does the job!

Both do a really good job and are best applied with a flat firm synthetic brush.

Anything heavier I’ve tried (including Mac Studio Finish) looks cakey and gets into fine lines.

I’ve tried nars radiant, but it’s too thick and looks dry on me. bobbi brown is too thick and creamy and never seems to set. my current regimen is the tarina tarantino brightening eye pen followed by the tiniest dot of smashbox high def. i don’t even squeeze it out of the tube, just tap my finger on the tip itself. after eye makeup is done, i set with MAC Pro shaping powder in accentuate, which is just the right shade of pale peach to work on my fair warm complexion.

The only concealer I am 60% satisfied with is makeup forever, I love it because it looks insanely natural. I recently tried Mac pro long wear and I think I will be a big fan because it is the only one so far doesn’t crease within the first two hours XD ..that’s awesome..

I use the Posh Impish Eyes for under eye circles. It’s a de-puffing serum that has caffeine and some other ingredients in it. I really love it because I can actually see a difference immediately without a concealer. I haven’t found a concealer that I really love yet but it is something I am constantly on the hunt for.
