A Winter Skin Care Tip: This Small Switch to Your Shower Game Could Turn You Into a Big Softie

December 16th, 2014 by Karen 21 Comments

When the bathroom floor is cold, and you’re literally freezing your butt off, bring your body moisturizer or body oil with you into the shower.

Stick it on a shelf, and do your shower thing. Then, when you’re done, towel off and moisturize before you even step out of the shower.

Then shake your fist at the horrible hobgoblin who decided not to install central heating in your apartment! 🙂

7 Heavy-Hitting Hydrators

7 heavy-hitting hydrators to take into your shower

  1. Philosophy Amazing Grace Whipped Body Creme, from the Amazing Grace Fine Perfume Jumbo Layering Set ($75): Feminine, flirty and marvelously moisturizing, it leaves skin smelling faintly of muguet flowers (lily of the valley), bergamot and musk. Available now online.
  2. L’Occitane Shea Butter Whipped Body Cream ($24): A light but highly moisturizing mousse that absorbs quicker than you can say, “Yes, I would LOVE to take home that chunky orange baby tabby.” 🙂 Available now online.
  3. Laura Mercier Golden Honey Musk Souffle Body Creme, from the Body & Bath Duet ($50): Quench your skin’s thirst while Indulging your senses with this warm and cozy blend of fragrant honey and amber. Available now online.
  4. Avene Body Oil ($24): A thick, rich mineral oil-based body oil with an earthy, peachy scent. Available now online.
  5. Tata Harper Revitalizing Body Oil ($90): It’s nice to see pronounceable words, like sunflower oil, grape seed and olive oil, at the top of this pricey, moisturizing product’s ingredient list. Available now online.
  6. Neutrogena Body Oil Fragrance Free ($9.99): Defeat dry skin without destroying your budget with this fast-absorbing fragrance-free favorite of mine. Available now online.
  7. Amlactin Alpha-Hydroxy Therapy Moisturizing Body Lotion ($18.99): An exfoliating lotion containing 12% lactic acid. I picked it up at Costco about a month ago, and my love for it grows stronger every day! I use it on my whole body, and I think it does a great job, but it really keeps my elbows, knees and feet feeling fabulously soft. Available now online.

Karen

I am a big fan of the Neutrogena Body oil. Stick it in a spray bottle with a few drops of a favorite perfume, or essential oil (I use tea tree or tea rose), and spray it on after the shower. It is the only thing that keeps me from looking like I need to molt.

I am really bad about moisturizing my body. I will have to invest in that Neutrogena oil and really keep it in the shower.

The skin on my face (forehead and nose in particular) has been super dry too. Any recommendations for a great moisturizer (that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg)?

I have already used up my pot of L’Occitane whipped body cream! I really hope they’ll make it permanent, because it’s really nice! Have you tried the whipped hand cream? Great stuff!

      Hi Sunny,

I have. It’s in my purse right meow! I’m kind of a hand cream hoarder, LOL!

      Happy Tuesday!

Oh yes, I do everything possible to not get out of the shower until I’m firmly wrapped up in my robe. 🙂 I have small rack hanging from the top of the door and I keep my lotion in there all the time. The Neutrogena Body Oil is a favorite of mine!

I love in-shower moisturizers for that purpose, especially the one from Lush (Rose´s Argan Body Conditioner). If you can stand the smell, it is a lazy girls dream.

I love using olive oil in the shower but I want to try that Neutrogena one now. A peach scent would be nice

I will try that tip. Even tho I let the steam build up in the bathroom and I have central heating the bills are so high, I keep the temp relatively low. I’m in love with a brand that’s not too far from you, I think: 80 Acres McEvoy Ranch. I love their blood orange body butter as well as their hand cream 🙂

I’m a big fan of the Oil of Olay in shower lotion. It’s hard enough getting out of the shower in the morning when it’s cold outside never mind waiting for anything to absorb. It’s so moisturizing that it lasts even after showering the following day. The scent reminds me of Crabtree & Evelyn La Source for some reason.

Back a few years ago, Alba made a version of their Emollient Body Lotion with 10% aha/bha. I loved that stuff because it was essentially organic Amlactin.

They don’t make it any more sadly. I haven’t been able to find Amlactin anywhere so here is hoping Costco will let me order it without a membership!

For me I find I get the most hydrating out of Sibu body cream and Weleda Sea Buckthorn body wash. For the price, you get a lot of bang. The combo is never greasy, they both smell glorious, and they really make skin younger looking over time. If anything gets chapped to the point of cracking or bloody, I put on organic coconut oil then follow up the next day with those products. Weleda Skin Food is also perfect as a pre-weather treatment. Anytime I put it on my hands pre snow, I never have any problems not wearing gloves other than cold fingers 🙂

O’Keeffe’s Working Hands and Corn Huskers lotion are my two moisturizer staples right now. Not the most glamorous of products but they keep my hands and feet from cracking, splitting, and bleeding during the winter months.

My current body cream is Vanicream. Also a huge fan of Eucerin calming crème and its store brand equivalents. I’m prone to itchy skin and eczema, so anything to help with that!

I’m a big fan of the Amlactin too. I discovered it a few years ago when my podiatrist recommended it to me for my dry feet and ankles.

Isn’t that a terrible feeling in the morning? Throwing open the shower curtain and getting that blast of (relatively) cold air? Hate it. And then if you try to keep the bathroom heated like a greenhouse, you’re surrounded by dense fog that can only be cleared from the mirror by quite a bit of blow drying. 🙂 I’m definitely itching to try Amlactin, but we don’t have a Costco so I’ll have to check some online options. See what I did there? Itching… 😉

I can’t believe how expensive some of these are! $90 for a body oil? It better come with a brand new bathroom 😀

Amalactin is great! I discovered it last winter. I wash my hands too much because of my job. So I used to get cracks on my fingers that were so painful and took way to long to heal. But if I put Amalactin on my hands before bed, my skin doesn’t crack and if I have cracks they heal very quickly. Even if it stings going on, just wait it will do it’s job.

That L’Occitane Shea butter sounds good! Right now, I use coconut oil from neck down and it is great! I keep some in a jar and put the jar in warm water and it melts right away. Use the unrefined for a coconut smell.

I always dry off before I get out of the shower properly, LOL! I can’t stand stepping out into the freezing cold in Winter… T_T I’ve never taken my body butters in there with me though – it’s a great idea!
