What Are Some Things That Make You Feel Better When You Have a Cold?

February 5th, 2015 by Karen 40 Comments

What are some things you like when you're sick?

Tabby snuggles, hot tea with lemon and honey, Chinese food (specifically honey walnut shrimp), being babied, heavy-duty face cream (for the skin around my nose, which invariably becomes dry and sore from all the sniffling and blowing) and Lifetime movies (like William & Kate on Netflix, which I felt a little better after watching), baggy sweatpants, because seriously, who wants to wear form-fitting clothing with a runny nose?

Oh, and warm socks… I like to put Vicks VapoRub on the soles of my feet and then pull on a pair of warm socks.

Don’t ask me why. I don’t know. I just like it.

Other stuff that helps: Cold-EEZE, Emergen-C, Throat Coat tea, Ricola cough drops and an almost scaldingly hot shower before bed.

What are some things that make you feel better when you have a cold?

Your friendly neighborhood, still sniffling beauty addict,

Karen

I’m sick too! cold eeze and emergen C have helped, also love hot shower before bed, makes me sleep better. but I think what is really helping me is this CVS version of Theraflu Night time cold and cough. It has a great lemon taste and I think helps me sleep better.

Also watching VELVET on Netflix has helped tremendously, can’t wait for season 2. I have lost my appetite but Simply Orange-Mango is a nice treat with a hot meal/hot soup 🙂

    get well soon xoxo

Naps. Spicy soup (lots of times I make a big batch of Tom Kha and drink it out of a thermos). Hot tea. Netflix. Nyquil. More naps.

Mostly I sleep until I feel better. I am terrible at being a sick person. Once I am mending, I tend to make myself up until I feel pretty, and do chores, so I feel more like a person.

Hot tea with milk and sugar, tapioca pudding, homemade chicken soup (courtesy of Dear Husband), toasted sperlonga with cream cheese & more hot tea with milk and sugar. Orange juice mixed with water. Oranges.

Then there is couch time with 2 pillows, a down comforter, and scrolling through websites for makeup and clothing rewards that I will need after getting through this cold!!

    Take care, Karen!

Try to think of this “cold” period as an opportunity!

When I’m sick during the day I try to rest and drink a lot of liquids, especially warm ones. At night, I’ve become a fan of hot toddies. I’m not a huge whiskey drinker but something about the combo of warm liquid, whiskey and honey is very soothing. Hope you feel better soon!

I haven’t been sick with a flu or cold since 2013 because I take ColdFx once a day in flu season, and one every other day all year long. It works for me. But when I am sick, I like fleecy pjs, fleecy sheets & blanket and for the nose, I spend the big bucks on 3ply tissues with Lotion… makes a huge difference to the skin around the nose. I also drink loads of Ginger Ale (actually I know I’m sick when I crave it), OJ, Water and Chichen noodle soup… Cold meds, and hot toddies. 🙂

I’m convinced that kitty purrs have healing properties. 🙂 Hot tea is usually my go-to, along with with a cozy blanket and lots of sleep. Also I crave spicy food, probably to combat the lack of taste/smell. Hope you feel better soon!

Snuggling with my puppies is the number one thing I want when I am sick. Also, tangerine orange fruit popcicles, condensed chicken soup, ramen, and crappy tv shows (ancient aliens, ufo specials, unsolved mysteries).

when I have something non contagious, like a sinus infection, a hot yoga class does wonders for me. Especially in winter, when you feel like the air is cold and dry wherever you go. The yoga studio is like paradise for a couple hours a week.

When I’m sick (which i was for the last couple of days) I like to stay in bed and watch netflix with access to endless amounts of food. For a stuffy nose, I heard using a neti pot is the best thing. It looks super scary but most people swear by it.

Tinola (Filipino chicken soup) and any Korean spicy soup (like spicy tofu or kim chee stew). Bottles of Powerade (usually I force myself to drink one of those big bottles an hour to help flush stuff out). Cepacol Sore Throat spray (benzocaine, not phenol) if I have a sore throat. And hugs. And hot toddies. But don’t mix alcohol with medicine, even if it’s over-the-counter! Especially Tylenol and alcohol, which can be a deadly mix.

Hi there, this is so real you asked this question. I’m home from work have been since Monday Feb. 2, 2015 with the flu. I was also with the same symptoms for the Christmas week or two. As of right now I’m on Tamiflu and others. What makes me feel better is hot shower and put on my soft cozy pj and fuzzy socks. Laying around in my den watching some movies either lifetime or the hallmark channel or either my christian channels. I love to drink warm teas and eat chicken soap. I also love to put Vicks under feel with sock on.

Ricola, hot showers (the steam helps clear out the sinuses), kitty snuggles (mine always seems to know when I’m not feeling well), spicy food and chicken soup. Wish my Babcia (polish for grandmother) was still around to make hers.
Sending you get well vibes. Hugs.

When I have a bad cold I crave Hot & Sour soup or won ton soup from either Jennie Low or the Chinese restaurant around the corner from my house. Ice cream, juice and hot tea. And I always get weird cravings, for things I wouldn’t normally eat. If I’m really cold I put the heating pad on my lower back.

I love your blog 🙂 Sorry you’re sick! A really great soup shortcut I recently discovered is adding a pinch of curry powder and a pinch of red pepper flakes to a can of hearty chicken noodle/rice soup, like Progresso. Heat everything up till it’s boiling hot and enjoy. It truly feels healing and tastes awesome. And no effort required, cuz who wants to cook when they’re sick?

Aww feel better Karen! I was super sick right after the holidays, and some things that helped me through it were heavy duty lip balm (I always thought that Bite Beauty Agave lip mask was a little over-hyped but it has saved my lips this winter), some wool socks, tea (I’ve been loving Hazelnut Truffle tea from Tea Forte), and some good video games/tv shows to help me through the entertainment portion. ^_^

Grog. That’s a hot beverage containing rhum and a grandma kind of “remedy”. There are as many recipes as there are grandmas, but usually it goes like that: hot water, rhum, lemon juice, honey, cinnamon, cloves, and some people add a few black pepper corns.

It usually alleviates the sinus pain and pressure for me. The good thing is that even if it doesn’t work, it still tasted delicious and it usually sends you to sleep 😛

Lazying around the house sipping tea and a couple of chocolates– from sofa to bed and back to sofa.
Watching a whole season of Project Runway or Top Chef or even Sex and the City (between naps) reruns wearing nightgown and fuzzy socks for the entire day.

Attempting to catch up with the growing stacks of magazines you don’t usually have time to read.

A fresh box of the extra -soft -with- lotion Kleenex in every room.
No boss to call to check up on you.
Hubby bringing home Pho without you having to call and ask him to!
Sounds good, I may feel a cold coming on soon too!

    Hope you feel better soon!

Karen – I hope you feel better soon! I was sick over the holidays and I remember being in bed in my robe, PJ’s, and socks for a combined total of about 22 hours, and the other 2 hours of the day I would eat, go to the bathroom, and cuddle with my puppy. Lots of sleep definitely helped, plus Jack Black lip balm and Kiehl’s moisturizer! I took DayQuil+NyQuil, and I remember sending my husband out to get hot&sour soup, Chinese food, and different kids of fruit.

I close the drain in the shower, sprinkle in some lavender scented epsom salt, and take a very warm shower. When I get out, I let the water drain and the bathroom is like a warm, lavender scented steam room. I also wrap up in my sweats, drink a hot cup of tea with lemon, honey, a cough drop, and a splash of rum (or whatever dark liquor you may have at home), and take a tylenol. Then, I binge watch TLC or QVC or something that doesn’t require heavy thinking. If I’m really congested, I rub Vick’s vapor rub on my forehead and wear a ski hat.

It’s so funny because when I have a cold (like right now), I also put Vicks on the soles of my feet before I put on warm socks! It helps me sleep well throughout the night when I’m sick.

The best thing that makes me feel better, though, is Korean food. Kimchi, especially Kimchi soup, really helps clear clogged nose. It also warms me up real good. 🙂 For the honey and lemon tea, I also put a bit of ginger and it helps!

Homemade chicken noodle soup (just broth and thin spaghetti – no chunks of chicken or veggies), tea with honey, comfy blankets and TV or a book depending on the level of headache. 🙂 I’m going to opt for jammies over even baggy sweatpants. Something fleece or flannel. HAHA! Oh, and definitely a shower. There’s nothing worse than feeling sick AND grubby. Yuck.

Of course, the workout makes me feel physically better the next day if I catch it before I’m actually full-on sick. Otherwise, the above does the emotional trick. 🙂

I found a recipe online for a “Miracle Winter Tea” Remedy. 1 cup honey, 1 medium lemon and a ginger root about the same size as the lemon. The measurements were not exact. Slice the lemon and roughly chop the ginger and place them inside a mason jar then pour the honey over the lemon and ginger. After letting the lemon and ginger flavors infuse with the honey overnight then you can add a couple scoops to a cup and pour hot water over it to enjoy. If you are feeling adventurous I would try a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and a few shakes of cayenne pepper. The cayenne pepper has natural anti-inflammatory properties that can help with a sore throat.

It’s very soothing and it was a great comfort. I also used ColdEeze. Vick’s VapoRub was a nice relief as well. I love Ricola but I found that Hall’s worked better. Something about the menthol truly opened my sinus and soothed my throat.

I’m sorry you are feeling under the weather. I am just getting over a horrendous cold (congestion and cough). I take something called Total VR-X from Nutri-West. It’s a formulation of: Vit A, Vit C, Zinc, Selenium and Echinacea, l-lysine, olive leaf (powder), american elder (flower), astragalus root, american elder (fruit),glycerol monolaurate, goldenseal root, olive leaf extract. I find that if I take it early enough I may not even get sick. If I take it after I’m already sick it seems to kick my cold in the butt so I get over it more quickly.
Feel good foods: my dear hub makes the best chicken soup and I have to agree with everyone here that spicy foods are great.
The Boosh seems to know when I’m not feeling well so she checks on me and gives me a well placed head butt nuzzle.
I also love laying around in baggy sweats with a comforter and watch some dopey old chick flick. or a classic comedy. Anything that I don’t have to pay too much attention to but makes me laugh.
DCT from blistex has been slathered on my parched pout because I ended up with a fever blister and they look awful with lipstick…ugh.
I hope everyone feels like a million SOON! Let’s all say a prayer for each other to heal quickly! Love and soft tissues to the nose.

My chiropractor turned me on to it and I googled it and found it online. If you decide to try it, I hope it works for you. I really don’t respond well to the generic drugs my insurance kind of forces me to take so I try holistic whenever I can. I also believe in eating as healthy as possible for the long haul. 🙂

I like a nice hot honey and lemon drink, homemade, and a shot of Jack Daniels, neat. A hot water bottle and my kindle in bed. I ‘have’ to have my Vicks nasal spray as I can’t bear to be blocked up, panic literally ensures if I can’t breathe through my nose.
