Good morning, glory! I hope you slept well. I woke up a little earlier than usual today, and it feels a bit like Christmas morning, because I’m going to Sephora to take one of their free makeup classes. For fun. This one’s called Daytime Smoky Eyes (I noticed that they also have a Correct and Conceal class, which I might take later if I like this one), and when I talked to the girl yesterday to reserve my seat, she said, “You can bring coffee if you want to,” to which I said, “Hallelujah!” 🙂

Although mine will be decaf, but still…I’ll pretend it’s real coffee.

So I’m off! Have a great day today, and good luck in the giveaway. I’ll talk to you soon.

Prize

  • One (1) MAC eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

Hi there! I recently decided to start a beauty blog and your blog was one of the biggest reasons why! I love the way you review items…it doesn’t seem staged, it just seems like you’re talking to friends. And I am trying to get over my fear of posting photos of myself, so seeing you post real photos, not ones where you’re doing the same serious face in them all, is such a great example for me!

Keep doing what you’re doing, and thanks for being a great influence for inspired bloggers like me!

I have two rescue cats and a dog and out of the three the tiger-striped cat is definitely the most vocal. She cries when I wont give her canned food, she yells at the door to the upstairs when she isnt in the mood to be downstairs again and she does this little sad meow when she wants me to pet her. She is the weirdest, she shoves her head into my armpit when she is getting cuddles lol.

    Hello Karen, and happy Caturday!
Yes, indeed my cat is so vocal, may it be in the morning, or during the night, nothing stops her… what made me call her Adele. Yes, she has the same voice, nature create miracles sometimes!
Talking about cats, my favorite poem is Le Chat by Baudelaire ( a beautiful comparison of a cat with an intriguing lady ), I think you might find good translations online.
Last, I am definitely a visual learner, and I bet no one have ever seen anything similar to my writing drafts, which consist in words, crosses, arrows, unidentified signs etc.

As someone who is preparing for exams right now, I’m very aware of being a visual learner which kind of sucks because the courses are too broad to summarise/graph 😀 (which is legitimately the best way to learn economics, seriously!)

Also, the first mac product I got was lipstick (I’m still not sure how that even happened), ‘Spice it up’, I think it was, and it spiraled from there 😀

Enjoy the class and the coffee, Karen. 🙂

I have a very vocal cat. He’s got a strong, round, yowl-y voice. I joke about enrolling him in opera classes at the Sorbonne; my husband’s pretty sure the neighbors think we torture him.

On the plus side, he’s really good about telling us exactly what he wants! … All the time. Has your cat ever woken you up before dawn because he decided there wasn’t enough ice in his water bowl, or because his food bowl had the audacity to be less than half full? That’s pretty much my life right now.

When I first started going to M.A.C. cosmetics, which was about a year ago, I started off buying two products.

    1. Blush all day pro long wear blush.
    2. Angel lipstick

My friends kept telling me to start going to mac because they had amazing products. So I took it to the test and tried it. I instantly fell involve with the blush. Till this day I own 3 of them. And the lipstick was amazing in my opinion. Believe it or not, I am wearing the lipstick and the blush right this instant.

If I win the $50 M.A.C. gift card, I would spend it on the new eye shadow X 15: Warm neutral palette. One of my friends has the same palette but the darker shade and I have tried it and it is truly an amazing purchase for the price of $48.

I am sorry I wrote so much for this contest.

My dog is very vocal. He loves to talk. And if he isn’t making noise he is “speaking” with his eyes. He has that puppy face and will kinda raise his eyebrows and tilt his head-usually to beg for a treat. He will also sit by his treat drawer and raise his paw (he thinks if he shakes it means an automatic treat).

Karen you have to update us on how the Sephora class went! I’ve wanted to go but am skeptical because I’m a MAC lemming. There’s something about MAC’s technique and the way they put color together that I don’t find anywhere else. What did you think of the class?

    Is your pet very vocal?
I had a Fred (orange tabby) that talked my ear off and was after me constantly for lap time and massages. I absolutely adored that cat. Wilma (white calico with rust and black spots) only deigns to acknowledge or speak to me when she wants something but she does show me her hiney quite a bit. She thinks it’s a gift, apparently. Sammie (snowshoe) is adorably quirky and we call him “an odd little dude”; he’ll break into conversation at 3 in the morning or walk around the house talking to the furniture and headbutting everything (the couch, my legs, the dog, the cabinets, corners) and he doesn’t really meow, it’s more of a guttural “MMMMMMRRRRREHHHHHH”. Sometimes it’s a question, sometimes it’s a statement. He’s got a great purr.

What’s the first mac product you ever used?
I can’t remember but I remember I was using Ultima II at the time, and went in for a makeover from MAC on a whim and was so in love with what they did to my face that I bought everything from the makeover. I know I WAY OVERUSED the studio fix pressed powder compact and went through those like they were going out of style.

Are you more of a visual learner or an auditory learner?
Great question. Visual – I don’t know if I started that way but I think since information is given in a more visual manner these days, I’ve acclimated. I don’t know if you can switch modalities like that but I feel like at one point I preferred auditory. I think we are all primary kinesthetic learners and have a secondary, complimentary preference.

Short and sweet or verbose and detailed?
Trick question!! I was going to say short and sweet but it depends on the context and or conversation. If it’s an interesting topic for all involved and we’re all listening and then discussing, I don’t mind someone being verbose and detailed because I like that kind of in depth conversation. But if it’s just a drama update or superficial crap, keep it short and sweet. The trick to a conversation, I think, is you have to be interesting and interested.

Okay, side note: Passing through a common work area the other day, I heard someone repeating over and over again, “Oh my God, that’s so funny. Seriously, that’s hilarious. Totally funny. You are so funny.” But they didn’t laugh. It’s like they had facebook or instagram brain and were just commenting but they weren’t engaged, you know? Maybe whatever was said wasn’t that funny but I don’t think so because most of the others were laughing, and not the polite, canned laughter either – it was sincere belly laughing. Maybe that person was just a mirthless s.o.b. and immune to humor. Maybe they are just too cool to genuinely belly laugh over something. But probably the other person didn’t think it was funny because they just wanted everyone to shut up so they could say what they had been waiting to say the whole time. It seems like there is always one narcissist in every conversation. From an observation standpoint, it was just odd.

You have inspired me to think about taking one of those classes — as long as I can bring coffee! Do let us know how it is!

MAC was the first brand of cosmetics I used — the first lipstick they put on me was hug me and I still have one in that color. But now I do not wear such nude-y tones, I am all for orange and red. I need to get me Lady Danger. I am also eyeing the new viva glam coming out — right in my orange red wheel house :).

With coffee, I can soapbox for hours about anything, without, I am short and sweet.

He knows our schedule, and if we don’t get up on time, he meows very loud to get us up 🙂 He will also pick up his “da bird” toy in his mouth, and meow at the same time telling us he wants to play. What fun questions. My first Mac product was a lipstick a friend passed on over a year ago. My next purchase was painterly paint pot – which I’ve never used. I bought it bc. I was new to makeup and heard it was great. But learning more about makeup, I really don’t need it. My skin is dry – and even toned -so I can use Elf, Fergie wet and wild, or too faced primer and they work great. And I hadn’t realized that in addition to solid priming, paint pots were to cover up uneven skin tones. My skin tone is even. I really don’t need it – although I’ll try it someday.

Only last month did I buy Mac products I’m loving. At a Cosmetic outlet center, I bought a couple of blushes and lipsticks. I just love the shades. I’ve been on a quest to find lip colors I can pull off – and tried so many that were too stark, dark, or bold on me. The Mac shades were special. Love them.

I don’t really remember the first MAC item I ever purchased because I purchased several items together -but I believed I got a lipstick, a paint pot eyeshadow, and several brushes. It was a hefty purchase, but it was worth it because until this day I am using the brushes. They are a good investment!

I had a VERY VOCAL pet, a chinchilla, La Femme Nikita, yeah, I know, very appropriate because she was the most opinionated being -not human – I had the pleasure to meet. Every time I will take her out of her cage at night to run around, she will proceed to “accomodate” her behind to pee on the carpet, I will say “don’t do it!” She will look at me with crazy eyes, BARK at me, turn, stand on her rear feet, and PEE IN MY GENERAL DIRECTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You will probably won’t believe this, but this is a real story. Even if I didn’t say a thing but look with accusing eyes she will do it! Why she waited until she was out of the cage is still a mystery to me. She was a migogynist too, as she only peed on women, never on men. She died, and I miss her. I had another chinchilla, Penelope, and she was sweet. La Femme Nikita was a bi%^&*, yeah, her personality was over the top.

I am a college student, and definitely more of a visual learner. I could never survive finals based on lecture recordings and notes alone. I seek out documentary videos and Khan Academy videos on the relevant topics so the material will sink in better and make studying less tedious. I still use the recordings and notes – but I don’t remember the material well if I use them alone. I also like professors that use a lot of visual presentations (e.g. PowerPoints with a lot of pictures instead of just text)

Happy weekend, Karen! I wish that I could always be a sweet and short spoken person–that’s actually a trait I really admire, because being able to condense your thoughts can make it easier (and faster) to be understood by your audience. Especially these days, when everything is all about instant gratification; taking too long to “get to the point” almost guarantees that some folks are gonna check out early…
But alas, as much as I’d like not to be, I’m sure this long-winded reply tells you exactly what type of person I am 😉

My cat, Bailey, used to be very quiet, but she has become quite vocal in the last few years. She’s 11 now (and currently curled up asleep next to me) and she’s decided she needs to get her way ALL the time! My husband gives her part of a can of cat food when we come in from work, so she goes crazy if he comes in and doesn’t immediately feed her. When she’s irritated with something you’re doing (or not doing), she grunts. It’s the most hilarious and unexpected sound. She puts her whole body into it to – you see the grunt go through her! I think she might have learned that from me, as I often grunt when I’m irritated (or sleepy). She’s horrid when she knows we are up, but haven’t come out of the bedroom (we have a baby gate up (though no babies!) because she was having accidents in the bedroom, so she isn’t allowed in anymore). Relentless yowling until you either come out or throw something close enough to scare her off. And she is adamant that she should get combed or brushed anytime you are combing or brushing your hair. So, every morning and every evening I have to either brush her or fight her off because she will not quit until she gets her way!!

And that’s just the cat – don’t get me started on how vocal the guinea pigs are!!

Hi Karen! I’m a do-it-myself learner usually, I like to figure it out on my own by trial and error, but if thats not possible, listening helps. Like when I learned to surf, it was trial and error and watching others. When I learned to play guitar, it was trial and error and guidebooks. And when I learned to speak french it was all by listening to lessons on CD. So I’m a multi-layered learner! haha 🙂

I almost died when I read your first question – asking if my cat is vocal is like asking if one needs oxygen to survive! My cat is SO vocal sometimes we have to give her “time outs” in the bathroom so we can concentrate at the task at hand, though we can still hear her meowing through the door. She’s a black cat, but her chattiness makes me think she may be part siamese. Her non stop meowing sprees can be really annoying but we love her for who she is. Meows and all!

I have two babies, one cat, one dog. The cat Lily is only vocal when she needs to alert us to an emergency, like empty water dish or low-level crunchies, or maybe we haven’t noticed that it is time for wet food. The dog is a rescue chihuahua that apparently spent 3 years in a puppy mill, so she doesn’t bark at all. In 6 years with us, she has barked about a dozen times, but she always finds ways to make her wishes known. She is spoiled rotten, they both are, but that is what happens when you love your babies. 🙂

She can meow normally when she’s scared or mad. Sometimes she even growls when she really really wants outside or doesn’t want you to take her off your lap. She would never hurt a fly and when she growls I know she would never bite, she’s just letting us know she really really reallllyy wants something at that moment.

I have to put a little coat of Vaseline on my lips at all times because I can’t stand how they feel dry without them. I use lipstick on top of my layer of Vaseline, but I hate how it somewhat mutes the lipstick. I guess I need to find a color that is crazy-bold so it will still pop over the Vaseline.

To continue from last weekend’s post, oh yes my cat is very vocal. To the point where my SIL is weirded out by her. And I kid you not, my cat likes to FaceTime. I’ll be FT’ing with my mom and she will come sauntering in the shot, tail high and meowing sweetly as if to say “Oh hi there!” I’ve never had a cat like her and couldn’t imagine life without her.

Today I snuggled ALL THE KITTIES! I went shopping at our local hardware and they have a store cat who wanted me to carry her, so I did of course. Then I went to a friend’s for a BBQ and snuggled his two cats. Then I went home and snuggled my own two kitties. So a pretty good day was had! 🙂

Sadly allergic to dogs and cats (especially 🙁 ) so can’t comment on their vocal levels. But give me a Claritin and I’m a good pet aunt to those that cohabit with my friends.
My MAC collection has come full-circle. I remember when it was first launched and we all ran to have their MUAs do their magic with us. While the lipsticks mostly spoiled and had to be tossed over the years since, I’ve kept virtually all the powders and liners. It’s amazing how many have remained standards. And last year, a MAC MUA suggested I try a lipstick that was going to be a hot color that season: Dubonnet, something I’d worn so many years back. Bought it right away and still love it.

    Hello,

My cats are oh so very vocal. “We want to go out,” is the biggest concern they voice. They do not have an outdoor kitty commend centre, so I must accompany them while they are on harnesses, so it isn’t just an ‘open the door’ kind of thing. I can sometimes distract them with treats or attentions!

What’s the first mac product you ever used? I wanted to get my makeup done for my wedding, but the makeup artists around here wanted $150 and I just couldn’t stomach that for ONE day. So I went to Nordstrom and had a MAC makeover and bought everything they used. I think I spent $130 but I had all the products to show for it.

The first MAC product I ever bought and used is the Mineralize cream foundation. I found out later that it’s not really the thing to use on oily skin so I went back to try the studio fix powder foundation but I’ve somehow figured I prefer using liquid. Any recommendations within the MAC line for liquid foundation? I’ve looked into the Face and Body but the SA said it’s not the best for oily skin either?

A favorite poem of mine, as childish as it might be, is “The Garden” by Shel Silverstein. It’s about a farmer who grows jewels and gems instead of fruits and veggies, like pink pearl berries and gold pears. At the end, he stops and dreams about just having a peach. As a child I loved the descriptiveness and mental imagery, and as an adult I love the underlying message.

My first Mac experience was actually a haul. I got a matchmaster foundation, a mineralize skinfinish natural, a prolongwear concealer, a lipglass (I think it was snob), and an oil control lotion. My favorite of the bunch to this day is MSN! I remember this cause I still have all of them. I don’t think it was more than three years ago!

Oh, yes, my pets are vocal. We have 3 parrots, Jezebel (African Senegal), Pedro (White Capped Pionus), and Zeus (Congo African Grey). Jezebel tends to have “fits,” where she flaps her wings and screeches. Zeus chastises her and says, “Jezebel! Jezebel parrot! That is ENOUGH! That is NOT necessary!” If we are eating, Pedro will start begging and say, “Pedro eat! Pedro eat!” Zeus never fails to reply with, “Pedro shut up, Pedro shut up!” We do not teach these phrases, they actually think in abstract concepts and put them together themselves, which is what makes it so funny!

The class is tomorrow night and I’m working. I’ll just keep watching for the next one. I walked into my first class with my coffee. Hi Karen I actually write poetry and like this one I wrote recently, I hope you read it!!!!!

    Mother Nature takes her toll
On complex creatures with gentle souls
She sends them rain when they seek solace
Her stars shine so bright it leaves them Aweless
Rays beam the brightest when they’re down
And shines their warmth upon their frowns
She opens their third eye so they might see
The striking beauty in a rugged tree
They look more closely and discover
That her roots connect us to each other

I’m also a cat lady and makeup & poetry obsessed! Love your blog and envy your complexion. Coveting many MAC items and keeping my fingers crossed 🙂

Hi, I have recently come across your site and your contest, so am giving it a try. This is my year for all things makeup. The first product I got from MAC (this year)was Preferred Pink Lip Palette. It was an impulsive buy. Though one I don’t regret. My interest in all things make up surfaced this year. And I was told I had to try MAC. So I went to get one of Cosmo/ Twig/ Mehr lipsticks which I had heard so much about. But they didn’t look me. And then I tried my hands on the palette. The MUA convinced me of mix match among the colors and I bought it. At first I wasn’t sure I’d use Violetta, but that is actually my color to go after a mix with Please me.

I am not a poetry person but one which has stayed with me is the poem ” Agneepath” by Hrivanshrai Bachchan, an Indian poet. Second to it comes “The Apple Tree” by William Blake. I love the way a human life is captured in both these poems. One is about rising, the other about falling.

I remember you posting earlier “does it feel weird to wear makeup around other people who don’t wear makeup” or something along those lines. My answer is “HELL YES!” I love make…LOVE makeup, but being around people who don’t wear makeup makes me at times feel like I’m too invested in makeup when I shouldn’t be?? Funny thing is before I started wearing makeup, it felt like everyone around me wore makeup and I was the only one who didn’t. Now that I am obsessed with makeup, no one I know wears it to the extent that I do, which is so disheartening. Everyone I know who doesn’t wear makeup says something along the lines of, “I don’t have the time to put on makeup”, which breaks my heart because putting on makeup is the best part of my day! Ha. I don’t think I’ll ever stop wearing makeup (I love it too much) but it does suck that more people don’t see how awesome it is and how fun it can be. It makes me feel pretty wearing makeup and well “why the hell shouldn’t I feel pretty?!?” Haha. Anyways…yeah I feel weird a lot of the time wearing makeup around people who don’t. =\

What’s the first mac product you ever used?

The first MAC experience I had was the day before my wedding reception. I was new to makeup and I started my makeup obsession with the Urban decay NAKED1 palette. I didn’t have anything for my lips. I wanted to learn and try MAC. I went to Times Square shop and was so excited to get the full treatment. She scrubbed my lips and taught me how to line, how to fill the lines, and made my lips perfect. The first Product I ever used was Angel lipstick. I purchased the Angel lipstick and she encouraged me to buy the liner and a lipglass as well. It was my wedding reception so I did.

Now I am obsessed with MAC and would feel so happy to be treated with a giftcard, but I will also cheer on whoever gets it. Lucky ladies to be considered. <3 Thank you-Cody

There is a super friendly cat living in our cul-de-sac who refuses to live in or even enter a house, but who demands food and attention from everyone he sees. When he gets hungry he’ll sit outside the door and meow for food as loud as he can!

Short and sweet or verbose and detailed? Kind of both. When I have the context, I want it to be short and sweet. Hey ya, come to the point!
When I do not know what the thing is, I want it to be verbose and detailed.

Is your pet very vocal?- My mom’s dog is extremely vocal (and has a bit of a Napoleon complex). I want you to pet me? BARK! Let’s play? BARK! That man I can see from this window standing on his own property…how dare he be so close to my humans! BARK BARK BARK! That piece of dust in the air?…well you get the idea lol!

I find myself always trying to prepare for emergencies. I keep a backpack with spare clothes, shoes, and small toiletry bag in the back of my car at all times. People find this weird thinking I’m trying to hide something.

Is your pet very vocal? One is, one isn’t. I think the one that isn’t is starting to learn from the one that is though.

What’s your favorite poem? Tyger Tyger, by Dylan Thomas.

What’s the first mac product you ever used? This liquid glitter eyeliner. It might have been counterfeit though, because I bought it off ebay. It had huge chunks of glitter in a thin base and I only wore it once because it cracked and fell off my eyes.

Are you more of a visual learner or an auditory learner? It depends. I like to be able to ask questions, although I feel that’s being frowned on more and more.

Something surprising you keep in your car? Does a trunk full of recycling count?

Short and sweet or verbose and detailed? Short and sweet. I’ve been told I’m a little abrupt.

One of my 4 dogs, Charlie, is totally vocal! I just had to put medicine in his ear for mites (bleuch) and I heard a whole symphony of sounds:
    Don’t touch my ears!
    I’m scared, no…don’t.
Hey, that feels kind of good.
NO! I was wrong. I hate it!
    I’m sorry I scratched you…
Please stop, if you love me you’d stop!
I love you Mommy, let’s never do this again, Ok?

And in Charlie’s honor, if I won this I’d get some Haute Dog lippies (I’ve got my eye on Rare Breed.)

Hi karen, hope you are having a great week. I took the plunge and got the beauty blender! Should be here tomorrow. Also took a dive and got KVD Lolita, my friends love it. Another order I made was for some Colourpop Ultra Matte lip colors and 2 Lippie Stix (lipsticks). Cant wait to try all these. I am not much of a lip color person so hopefully these will motivate me to wear lip products more.

Hi Karen! I hope that you are doing well. My cat Custard is very vocal. When he is being mischievous and gets scolded, he will actually back talk, like a child. He is my little blue eyed monster of a Munchkin breed. But I wouldn’t have it any other way.

The kid I mentor got a bogus charge against him thrown out today, and the ridiculous prosecutor who was pushing it got told in no uncertain terms by the judge that she was wasting his time and IT WAS AWESOME. And now the kid can go back to college without this hanging over his head. Yay!
