September 12th, 2015 by Karen 370 Comments

** THE GIVEAWAY IS CLOSED **

This giveaway is closed, and the winner has been contacted (CONGRATULATIONS, LISA!!!), but check back next Saturday for another giveaway.

On your next trip to San Francisco, you can take a cable car right to the front door of the Powell Street Pro Store @maccosmetics at 45 Powell Street and then have @pinkberryswirl down the street for desert! What. A. Day. #makeup #noms #pinkberryobsession

A video posted by Karen (@karenmbb) on Sep 12, 2015 at 7:16am PDT

Good morning, sweet girl (and boys). I’m sitting here with a rumbly tummy, which I never do on Saturday mornings, because I am trying to get out of the house ASAP, and I’m running a little late.

I’m going to another one of those Sephora classes at the store down the street, this one called Correct and Conceal, which sounds right up my alley.

I hope you had a fun Friday night. Yes, I did end up playing that D&D-ish game with El Hub, and you know what? I was entertained. I did not totally hate it, and El Hub was really good at being, I guess, the game master and telling a story.

Who knew? That man surprises me every day.

My character is a 17-year-old girl named Bijou, and when I told El Hub that’s what I wanted to name her, he said, “You really want to name this girl Bijou?” and I said, “Yes, her name is Bijou.” And she has a winged cat with navy blue feathers.

Of course. Of course she does. 🙂

Prize

  • One (1) MAC eGift card containing $50 sent to the winner by email (international readers, you may opt to receive $50 sent by PayPal instead).

I used to always wear waterproof mascara thinking I needed it to keep it from smudging. I recently realized that my lids can get so oily during the day that they were dissolving the waterproof mascara making it smudge. Now I use regular, and don’t have a problem.

Best work party ever: This was about 19 years ago, but it was the party to celebrate my husband’s place of work’s 50th anniversary. At the time, it was a major employer, so it was a huge blowout. Exhibits, tons of amazing food, wine, beer, soft drinks, a bunch of freebies, and a Smokey Robinson concert for entertainment. Plus, Governor Kitzhaber nearly stepped on me. LMAO The wine made me nauseous, so I couldn’t drink any. It turned out I was pregnant with son #2.

I can’t wait to get these braces off my teeth so that I can actually wear all my lipsticks. I’ve been a little self conscious about wearing lipsticks with these hideous braces. One of my elementary school students told me, “I didn’t know that adults can wear braces.” LOL!!

When I was pregnant my Siamese cat would lie in my lap resting his chin on my baby bump and purr like crazy. I swear that my son must have somehow felt it because when he was little a purring cat would make his eyes roll and put him to sleep immediately. The cat thought that HE was my first baby. He lived to the age of 21 and has been gone for 15 years. I still miss him greatly. No other cat that I’ve had since has been anywhere close.

I’m a little bummed about my life right now. I have been a professional mua for 4 years now. This is the first fashion week that I haven’t worked FW whether at London or NYC. I tried to make a go of it in London. Unfortunately, I failed. So now I at 38 have had to move back in with my Mom and start all over again. The last couple of weeks has been pretty lonely. It’s probably doesn’t help that I’m out in the middle of nowhere and I haven’t been good with keeping up with my friends. This has been a hard transition. I hope that I find a job soon so that I can start pulling myself up again. I don’t know why I am writing this post. For some reason I felt like sharing here.

I have a love/hate relationship with waterproof mascara. Since I have long, thick lashes, waterproof mascara is the only mascara that will hold a curl on my lashes. But then I can never seem to get all of it off! It’s so annoying! Maybe I just haven’t found the right eye makeup remover yet?

I often just curl my lashes and then put on some falsies. It’s sooo much easier! Plus, who doesn’t like adding a little drama to the eyes?

    Heyyyy, Karen!
Happy Caturday! I hope you enjoyed your ‘correct & conceal’ class (& got some good freebies)!
So I’m extremely curious to know what species Bijou is… I’m partial to the elven breeds myself 🙂

So, I’ve never seen a real factual mirage when awake (as far as I know…the flat salt areas in Utah near SLC can look like lakes, but maybe they really were?), but my dreams are so realistic that they’re borderline mirages (2nd definition)..

I have fallen in “quick sand” on the beach in baja twice (before you climb up the dune to get to the ocean), & that was extremely gross! When I finally got out both times, I was covered in this black, tar/oil-looking substance. It was very scary. They say that you can tell where the quicksand patches are because they have a ton of salt as a top layer..

Product(s) I’m lusting after—Viva Glam V lipstick or Tropic Tonic, MAC’s Look in a Box—Basic or Advanced Brush Kit, & a Mineralize Skin Finish in Natural (the list could go on & on & on, but you did say “lusting”..MAC is unfortunately very good at making you lust for their products!)

Hope you have a great Sunday!

I love my local Walgreens’ makeup and beauty sections with a deep, slow burning passion.

I used to work at a restaurant on Sunday evenings, which worked with my M-F schedule as a student (despite clashing with my early Monday morning classes, but sacrifices had to be made). After a long evening of customer service and tidying up, my post-work ritual would consist of scarfing down cookies and iced lattes on my drive over to the Walgreens on the way home. I’m not sure what it was about the store that would re-energize me– the fluorescent lights? the orderly displays, as compared to the disarray I was amid only hours before?– but I know that part of it was the makeup aisle. My minimum wage lifestyle dictated the order in which I browsed, which was actually the reverse order from pharmacy to door (Wet n’ Wild, Rimmel, Revlon, Maybelline).

Yes, many of those purchases were influenced by the fuzzy thoughts of a brain being charged up with a late night caffeine rush, and the desire to just feel pretty after working all day. But it was through this weekly visitation, scrutinization, and purchase of the products of various drugstore brands that I learned which products work best for me (blue-tone reds, washable mascara, and marker/brush tip eyeliner) and which don’t (peach/pink-tone nudes, blue nail polish, frost finish lipstick).

Thanks for reading Karen! Love your blog!

I am in need of a new paint pot in painterly. I have a problem with it drying out my eyelids but if I use a moisturizer with a little argan oil added to it. It is just the right amount to keep my lids from looking crinkly. Painterly is the perfect eye base for my pale skin.

Something I’m lusting after: Kat von D eye shadows. I bought her Get the Look set which came with two eyeshadow trios and two mini eyeliners that were on sale at sephora and I love it is much! I want more eyeshadows!
I’m also lusting after atelier cologne samples that come with beautiful postcards. I check up on the sephora samples page often to see if there is anything I like, especially atelier cologne samples. I only wear waterproof mascara on special occasions. I love how it holds a curl, but it takes a long process with many steps to get it off my lashes. It’s like chunky glitter nailpolish, real pretty, but such a drama to remove, and so I only use it when the effect is worth the aftermath.

I hardly ever wear waterproof mascara. I don’t like how stiff it makes my lashes feel or how hard it is to take off. It feels like it takes too much of my real lashes with it. Now that I’m thinking of it, I don’t wear waterproof anything! I should find some eyeliner that is, though, because I inherited a “leaky eye” from my mom. For some reason, both of our left eyes water all the time.

I am LOVING Tarte’s Lights, Camera, Lashes mascara. I also use Latisse, which is BOMB. Using those together, my lashes are looking better than ever. I get compliments all the time! FYI- Lights, Camera, Lashes is only $10.50 today– Ulta’s Beauty Steal. I stocked up!

A product I’m currently lusting after… a good primer, setting powder, and setting spray! I suppose that’s really three, but recently I’ve been having issues with getting my foundation to look natural AND stay put. I hate a powdery look but without it my face will melt off by the end of the day, especially as a med student! I’ve heard that the Hourglass mineral primer is to die for, and I’d love to try that, as well as the MUFE Setting Powder and maybe the UD sprays? And of course, I couldn’t end a wish list without Charlotte Tilbury — student debt sucks.

I’m a lip product person: Bite lipsticks, Lipstick Queen lipsticks (the blue jean one, Medieval, Bête Noire, etc.), Burt’s Bees Sweet Violet, countless Etsy lip balms… My obsession is out of hand, but it could always be worse… Right? Right! Oh yea, RMS Luminizer. Not lips, but glowy skin is my jam too.

I always do an image search and when I see your face I go straight to your blog because I love your reviews. They are honest and straightforward. You have helped me pull the trigger or the plug on tons of products as a fellow cosmetic junkie. It’s so fun to be female. Let me retract that, it’s fun to wear makeup.
My lucky number is 7 and 11. It’s my daughters birth weight. I empathize with pregnancy tummy, I’ve been told it was an indicator of a healthy pregnancy. I don’t know if that’s true.
My everyday waterproof product is eyeliner because of watery eyes?.

-Hardly ever. I like the idea of waterproof makeup but it can be so difficult to remove at the end of the day that I don’t always think it’s worth it.

A boring yet necessary beauty essential?
    -Sunscreen

A product you’re currently lusting after?
-I’m dying to buy YSL Tint in Oil in #5! I tried a sample of it and I fell in love. It’s just so expensive! I think I’ll buy it next month as a birthday present to myself.

Your post on Tabs almost had me tearing up. We just adopted a puppy 3/31/15. We took him, Buddy, and our dog Sara -adopted in 2008 @ 6 months- for a check up. As we left, they gave us paperwork on “Caring for your Senior dog.” What!?!? Well, my Sara is more active, less cranky and happier we adopted our pup Buddy. She is also more of a doggy. She was a little cat-like. 😉

Best work party ever? – Retail, when we would stay after hours and just drink and chill together 🙂
How often do you wear waterproof makeup? Every day. It’s a necessity.
A boring yet necessary beauty essential? Mascara. I know, it sounds silly. But my lashes are straight, short, and not particularly voluminious. And mascara is boring because it never does anything to change that. I guess it’s exciting because I always try every new one that comes out, but in the end it is the same old boring lashes.
Have you ever seen a mirage? Yes, in Vegas. When we had a very long walk ahead of us and it was so, so hot.
What are your lucky numbers? 13 😀

Best work party ever? One year when I was a bartender at a restaurant, the employee party was the most awesome ever. At least what I remember of it. We bartenders kinda snuck off to one of the side bars and doctored our drinks a little. “What? No, we’re drinking ICED tea. Really.” All night long.

How often do you wear waterproof makeup? Only mascara. Always. As a former contact wearer and current eye-rubber I couldn’t wear anything else.

A boring yet necessary beauty essential?

Have you ever seen a mirage? No.

What are your lucky numbers? What? So you can steal them and win the lotto?! No way! 😉

Hey beautiful mama! I don’t have a lucky number because I’ve never noticed a pattern of luck when it comes to numbers or maybe I’m just not superstitious at all. I have an auntie who refuses to wear anything red (or maroon or fuschia or any other shade in the family of red) because she says it’s her unlucky color. She just ends up having a bad day when she wears red!

Lately I’ve been thinking a lot about how cosmetic corporations like to sell the same products under different labels and at different prices. For example, the new MAC Studio Waterweight Foundation (which I’m LOVING) and the Smashbox BB Water are literally the exact same formula, except MAC offers more shades and is $10 cheaper… What is that?! Like, how did Estée Lauder think it was a good idea to do that? I guess this is why I never went into business.

The most fun work party I’ve ever attended was when I was in college I worked at a funeral home and at least once a year our boss would ask us if he rented a cabin on a nearby lake for all of us to go and cook out, play games, etc would we like it. Of course we said yes and he rented the cabin with numerous bedrooms so none of us had to drive home if we partook of adult beverages. It was just so fun. I hope u have had a great day and have a great evening.

I started the week with a consultation at my local Bobbi Brown counter (a pre-order for 20% discount with Goodwill donation).I walked away with radiant skin, undereye area well covered, a new art stick, lipstick, and blush. I love when you can work with a makeup artist and leave with a natural, radiant look and products that you’ll absolutely love & use. We looked at eye palettes but they just didn’t suit me. I didn’t feel pressured to buy ‘the latest’ or a certain amount…goodness knows I should be a shareholder for all I own. I’m still tickled about my consultation – what a great way to start off the week! Hope you had a great class at Sephora!
