For me, Aveda is one of those stores that’s like Jupiter’s gravity. It draws me in! There’s one at the Corte Madera mall by my house, and my nose compels me to walk in whenever I’m there, just to smell the shampoos and conditioners.
The ladies who work there are always so nice, too. “Can I get you a cup of tea or help you find a product?” And I’m like, “Nope! I’m just here to sniff the shampoos…”
LOL! They must get that a lot. 🙂 I don’t see how someone could not walk into an Aveda store, though. They’re so herbal and earthy and refreshing and just so, so good to my nose. My favorite of their fragrances is Shampure, which just so happens to be the scent behind their new Shampure Dry Shampoo.
Shampure is their signature calming scent, and it’s filled with 25 flower and plant essences, like lemon verbena and lavender (the bottle says that the ingredients are “99.8% naturally derived”). Ahh… It’s like a relaxing Sunday afternoon at the spa.
So because of the scent, of course I had to try the new dry shampoo. A 2-oz. bottle costs $30, and it’s on shelves at Aveda salons, spas and stores (it’s also available online). Also, hello! — dry shampoo junkie right here. I use them four or five times a week.
First things first, the packaging.
Hmm… It works like a squishy bottle of baby powder, and the product is a non-aerosol powder, so you tip the bottle upside down, then bring it right side up, then squeeze, and the powder puffs out in a mist.
Now, I’m clumsy, so that might have something to do with it, but I have a hard time using the bottle. Compared to my current dry shampoo obsession (and one of THE BEST dry shampoos in the history of the world), Living Proof Perfect Hair Day Dry Shampoo, which comes in an aerosol spray, this one’s difficult to use. The powder comes out in puffs and doesn’t naturally disperse over a wide area, which means that I have to position the dispenser right up close to my scalp, and even then, I end up with a white powdery residue on my dark hair, which then takes forever and a day to brush out (although it does eventually get to where it’s basically invisible).
Probably also because of how easy it is to over-apply, it also leaves my roots feeling a little inflexible.
I’ve given it a few tries to see if practice would make the bottle easier to use, but it really hasn’t.
I LOVE the Shampure scent, the natural ingredients, and the powder seems to do a pretty good job absorbing oil and “hiding” dirt, but a larger 4-oz. bottle of Living Proof Perfect Hair Day costs $22.
Aveda Shampure Dry Shampoo has wonderful ingredients and a great scent, so it might come down to how you feel about the bottle.

Hmm might have to skip that one… I love most/all of aveda’s other products though! Do you ever find that dry shampoo dries your hair out? I read somewhere that it does because of all the alcohol, which sort of defeats the purpose of not washing it!

I haven’t really experienced that any dryness with dry shampoo, but maybe that’s because I don’t really have that issue in my roots, which is where I mostly use it. I do tend to get some dryness on my ends but I think that’s mostly because my hair is dyed and I do heat styling once a week.
I usually love Aveda’s hair products, too, by the way. And weirdly enough I also like their tea. Have you tried it? SO YUMMY!

I LOVE the Aveda tea, it’s the most delicious tea ever IMO.
I am so curious about that Aveda Dry Shampoo, can’t wait to try it! I use LUSH’s Dry Shampoo almost every day, and it comes in a non-aerosol bottle as well. I just put the powder into the palm if my left hand, than grab it between my fingers and work it into my roots while holding my head upside down. I do this over the bath tube because powder gets a little around you.
That works pretty well. I think it depends on what you use it for. I don’t get so much volume in my roots that way, but I get a cleaner and fresher feeling in my roots, when it’s the day after wshing my hair. (I don’t wash it daily because my scalp would freak out otherwise, and my hair would totally dry out because if so much blowdrying.)
Hmmm it’s a bit too pricey to have such an annoying packaging… You know I discovered the wonders of dry shampoo through your blog Karen? Before I thought it was just a quick fix for oily hair when you don’t have time to wash!
TGIF! I love Aveda, too. I had some of their Rosemary Mint shampoo/conditioner in the past, and it was such a treat. Bummer about the packaging – their options are probably limited by avoiding aerosol. Still, you’d most likely have to be hard-core to choose it over the convenience of Living Proof’s. 🙂
The Living Proof one is SO GOOD. I’m totally stocking up on it during the Sephora VIB sale. 😀
I go to an Aveda salon and while I do enjoy the scent while I’m there, it’s a little pungent on my head, especially if it’s windy haha. I will confess to washing it again the next day just to get rid of it. I can only take it in small quantities. ? I am sort of tempted to try that Sephora kit of dry shampoos that has the Living Proof along with the b&b powder. I’ve heard good things about several options in the kit!
Everybody has been saying good things about the Living Proof dry shampoo. I’m going to buy it during the Sephora VIB too! Aveda products have a good reputation but I haven’t used any of them yet.
I am the exact same! I HAVE to go into an Aveda store just for the smell!! I also only go to their salons because I love their products that much!
Bummer this didn’t work out but did you know that at some stores, they can actually create a perfume for you with the scent of one of their products you love?!
My first ever dry shampoo was the “No Drought” by LUSH, and it is a no-aerosol, too. While I love the effect it has on my hair, it is such a hassle to use compared to sprays… But the upside is: it is almost impossible to finish! y bottle is still half full, and I have been using it on and off for more than three years!
I bought the Living Proof dry shampoo after you recommended it and I.freaking.LOVE.it!!! So, so good!
I love the scent too but it sounds to inconvenient and hard to work with. Even if you do smell glorious after.

I work as a stylist at an Aveda salon. The dry shampoo was one of the most hotly coveted items to launch for the company…so much so retail arrived before we had it to use on guests behind the chair. The packaging and design are what they are as Aveda wanted it to be the greenest packaging available. It’s non aerosol so no proplellents, alcohol, butane etc. Best method of application is to tip the bottle upside down, then right side up and gently squeeze. I would hold about 8 incest away from the scalp to avoid powder marks. I’m personally a fan as I found other dry shampoos would give me stiff roots whereas this “melts” in as it is a true powder. Hope that helps some of you out 🙂
I love this stuff and couldn’t wait to get it! I do agree with Steph’s comment by tipping the bottle upside down. I use this by the root of my bangs as they tend to get oily and it sure helps. Also love the scent of it.

All products that I have ever tried from Aveda smell gorgeous- but the Shampoos and Conditioners seem not to agree with my coarse thick hair. But the leave in treatments are heaven! 😉
