Rise and shine, pal o’ mine! What an eventful week… I know I’ve been kind of incomunicado, but I wanted to spend some holiday time with my in-laws, and then yesterday was my first day using my new gestational diabetes gizmo/blood testing thingamabob.

In other words, it was a busy week!

Yup, I was diagnosed with that gestational diabetes stuff. 🙁 It’s pretty common and hopefully temporary. Most of the time it goes away after delivery, but for now I have to prick a finger, test a little drop of blood and log the results in my doctor diary four times per day — once in the morning after getting up, and then once again after each meal.

I mean…it’s not my idea of a party, and I still get anxiety when I have to poke myself with the needle, but you gotta do what you gotta do, ya know? High blood sugar can cause complications later, so if I have to test my blood, watch what I eat even more closely (What!? No more TJ’s dark chocolate stars this year! THE HORROR!) and exercise a little more, it’s done.

In other news…well, I don’t really have any other news. 🙂 Tabs is doing well. He’s almost finished with his Christmas shopping, and he’s been loving life lately because El Hub has been taking him for early morning walks outside while it’s still dark, so he gets to use his cool cat eyes…

Other than that, we’re just chugging along. I hope you are too.

Oh! So much new MAC-ness to talk about, especially new lip products. I’ve been a lip product testing machine! Stay tuned for deets next week.

Karen, Sorry to hear about the diabetes! My mom (also named Karen!) had diabetes when she was pregnant with me too, but it went away when I was born. She likes to say that she then got a whole new set of problems…. Hope you feel better and keep your spirits up! It sure would be hard at the holidays. Maybe buy a few extra boxes of Chocolate stars and save them for once the baby is here and you can eat as much as you want again!

Karen, so sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes! Yes, it does almost always go away after delivery, and I know you’ll take good care of yourself and baby girl, but sorry you have to deal with it!

I’m not old fashioned about most things, but there are a few little things that I’m funny about — like, I can’t stand to let my hair elastic show, always have to wrap it if I’m leaving the apartment. Never mind that, when I was growing up, no adult woman, let alone one my age, would ever wear a pony tail or braid — those styles were strictly for children! or maybe going hiking, or to the beach or the gym, although no one went to the gym back then — there weren’t any gyms to go to other than body-building gyms for guys. How times have changed!

I’ve got problem spelling ‘chunk’, for example: chunk of meat. But I often pronoun it as “chunch”, which doesn’t mean anything and my bf thinks it’s cute. Instead of making fun of me, he and I actually make it up as a new word for everything such as “I’ve got some cool chunches at the store today”. It’s just sweet to me:)

I’m definitely old fashioned or “old soul” my friends joke that I am the grandma of the group. Golden girls is definitely a classic show I’ve watched since I was 10 years old. I think I’m Old fashioned because of the influence of so many romance novels I’ve read over the years as well.

Hey Karen! I had gestational diabetes too. It did suck, but I was able to get through it without having to take any medications and I didn’t have any complications due to it. My daughter was born without diabetes. I was very carb sensitive, so I was doing a version of the Atkins diet during my last trimester. I was eating a lot of almonds, canned chicken, canned tuna, apples with low sugar peanut butter, and cole slaw. (The kind that is pre chopped in the bag? I’d mix it with olive oil and a can of tuna.)

    Don’t despair.

That sucks that you have it! I can make a few suggestions!

Stick to non carb heavy snacks like nuts and jerky. Maybe protein bars that are low sugar, I get some from TJ’s that are pretty good called Power Crunch. Hard Boiled Eggs are perfect.

Make your dinner protein and veggies only. If you want carbs, eat them in the day.

Try steel cut oats if your a fan of cereals in the AM.

Cut out juice for tea. Get more La Croix waters.

Cut out all white carbs and as many processed foods as possible.

For fruit, stick to apples, pears, and berries. They have the most fiber and least sugar.

What’s your favorite era of makeup?

Had to say but I just watched a little short on Chinese makeup through the years on Bella Sugar, and the 40’s really stuck out to me!

Would you say you’re old fashioned?

On very few things, yes. The rest, I’m pretty much anything goes!

Do you have any new year’s resolutions?

Yeah, the usual ones and then I’m going to add one about my phone. I need to be more present instead of checking my social media while watching tv or movies at home.

    Something you wish lasted longer?
LOL… So many things. Fall and Christmas are two I can safely say!

Make up a word — any word — and tell me what it means.

Can’t do this one… The Grammar Nazi is in full effect this morning.

Something you wouldn’t do in a million years?

That’s hard to say. I’m pretty sure I’d never walk a tight rope over the Grand Canyon.

A lot of times when clothes shopping the petites are made for tiny short people. What about the curvy & fat short people huh??? Also congrats to you

So sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes. I was tested through each of my four pregnancies but was negative. Years later I have Type 2 diabetes. I am on metformin and the lowest dose so no problem. I rarely check my levels as I am so well controlled. I am sure you will be fine but so good that they found it. My last baby was 9 lbs 2 oz. so I guess it was no surprise to later be diagnosed.

And I wish I could have a lipstick that would stay longer!!

Karen, I’m so sorry to hear about your gestational diabetes diagnosis, I understand the difficulty of a restricted diet but just think of the wonderful prize at the end.

Reminds me of when a friend of mine was given a restricted diet because she was borderline diabetic during her pregnancy, the doctor told her that she could not eat sugar and that included rice, she said “no rice, what do you mean no rice, I’m Puerto Rican!”

Sorry to hear about the gestational diabetes, Karen! I feel bad sometimes because I’ve been pretty terrible about moderation with this pregnancy yet sugar and blood pressure have been perfect. Lucky, I guess. Same thing first time around. Due date is tomorrow, nothing happening as of yet but since Colin was a week late, I’m not antsy. We’re still kind of scattered in the prep department and still haven’t given a ton of thought to a name, sigh.

Recorded three videos today and that lack of moderation is really showing, man my face gets chunky with all this weight I’ve gained! Not sure how long of a break I’ll be taking from YouTube but not like it’s paying the bills. 🙂

Fave era of makeup has to be ’40s and ’50s. Betty Grable, Marilyn Monroe, Lauren Bacall, Rita Hayworth glam cannot be beat. I wish I could do as much with as little- think of the limitations they had in makeup technology and products/brands available and what they were able to do with it!!! and it wasn’t just the starlets of the day who had the look down. look at photographs in family albums from the day and be amazed by all the regular women who knew their way around a pot of rouge and false lashes!!!

    Hey Karen,

Happy Saturday (hey Tabs). My prayers to you during your pregnancy love and this gestational diabetes thing. You sound like you’ve got in in check and that’s an awesome thing. It’s a pretty gloomy, rainy, Saturday in AZ so I’m enjoying it by watching movies and drinking Peppermint Bark coffee (w/ a splash of Peppermint mocha SF creamer). It’s delish.

What’s your favorite era of makeup?

Definitely the 60’s. There is so much emphasis on the eyes back then (much like today) and they were creative with the lines and the liner.

Would you say you’re old fashioned?

To a degree. I mean I’m not totally out of touch with the current times, but some things from our parents and grandparents past shouldn’t be forgotten.

Do you have any new year’s resolutions?

I do not have any resolutions , because I don’t want to disappoint myself when I don’t fulfill it (or them). Instead I’ll take one day at a time. Mini goals I call them.

Something you wouldn’t do in a million years?

Any extra curricular activity that could result in my death if done wrong.

Hi karen, hope you are having a great weekend. I have two kids, 5 and 18 months on christmas day. I had gestational diabetes with my daughter, the youngest, and it was no fun! But I didn’t know I had it until I was in the hospital delivering her. I also had preeclampsia, blood pressure issues. She was born at 33 weeks but like I said she will be 18 months on christmas!

I’ve been really struggling with my skin lately, and have been having a hell of a time finding products that help and that I can afford. I have a huge Sephora shopping basket so you can imagine what 50 free dollars would do for my spirits! All my best to you and your family, hope you feel better soon. Xxx

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes too. It sucked so much! The only thing that kept me on the diet was the fear that I was going to have to deliver a 9+ pound baby. I ate a lot of peanut butter on wheat toast and greek yogurt and chicken. I recommend getting the greek yogurt and adding in some cherries from the frozen fruit section. Beef and turkey jerky makes good snacks too. Cheddar cheese too. So after all that effort, I ended up delivering a 7lb 3oz baby. Yay!

She was completely back to normal IMMEDIATELY after delivery, so have El Hub stand by with a box of those cookies when Baby Girl makes her debut!

My sister-in-law followed the rules to a T and once baby was born, neither her nor baby had the diabetes. My niece on the other hand wasn’t as careful and after baby was born, baby was ok, but now my niece has diabetes. I know cravings are awful but try to take care of yourself and baby!! all the luck! 🙂

I had GD with my second child. I had to take medication at night to help keep my sugar levels down. I had gained a TON of weight with my first born so it definitely helped me kick start healthier eating habits the last 2 trimesters with my second child. I actually lost weight each month which I thought was strange but my dr was fine with it. My son came out a healthy 6lb baby boy. And my diabetes was gone after my pregnancy.

Something I definitely wish lasted longer is my babies staying little as my oldest is now 10 and going into middle school next year. So not ready for that!!

What a week! I’m currently working full time and while it’s going well for the most part, I got hit by a quick change scam artist and lost $80 yesterday. My boss assured me it’s fine, but I still feel terrible about it! The worst part is, he hit another store a few days ago and the person working there didn’t think it was worth telling anyone. Siiiiigh. Oh, well, only four days left before I get a week off!

I’m a sucker for 80s makeup. Not super extreme, but sort of romantic – like something someone with fluffy hair and nice blouses would wear in a rom com. I’m also pretty into the nineties being back because I like the natural vibe. And I totally just bought some Besame lipstick so I can try Agent Carter’s 40s vibe.

Hi there! I’m an aspiring beauty blogger from South Africa. By this I mean, I’m a science student with a secret fetish for all things beauty!
I work on farms where there are tons of snakes, in muddy fields, terribly hot summer sun, very unsexy field gumboots and overalls.

Lemme tell you… when I get home, I strip that all off and my alter ego comes out. If someone asks me where all my student money went, I say on my face!

We actually don’t have Sephora here, and unfortunately they don’t accept SA credit cards, nor do they ship here or forward to shipping companies. This gift voucher would help me FINALLY purchase something gorgeous from Sephora that I can keep in my overall pocket on dreary trips. Sneak a peek, chuckle on the inside, have a little tête-à-tête, and carry on with my day!

    NEW YEARS RESOLUTION:
    STOP SMOKING
I have tried and failed so many times over the years – biggest reason why? I just wasn’t ready.
    Am I ready now? YES.
I’m ready to spend more time with my children since I won’t be stepping outside once every hour to have a cigarette.
I’m ready to be back in control of my on life.
I’m ready to stop the advanced ageing of my skin.
    I’m ready to get healthy.
So – the cigarettes go into the trash at Midnight New Years Day.
I’m actually looking forward to it!

I’ve had gestational diabetes during both pregnancies (I was 42 and 44). Apart from a superfluous amount of amniotic fluid, there were no other side effects. Both babies came a bit early (one with 37 weeks, the other with 38), but they were both in good health and with an average weight. So, don’t worry. Just be a little careful with what you eat.

Btw congratulations on your pregnancy. It’s been 5 years since I was last pregnant, but I remember it like it was yesterday. So excited for ya. Sorry to hear about the GD. Good luck in general!
