Greetings from the seaside! I’m literally a hop, skip and a jump away from the Monterey Bay right now. I woke up this morning to the song sound of screeching seagulls outside my window because El Hub and I decided to take one lash hurrah trip before Baby Girl comes, so we drove down to Monterey a few hours south of us and left Tabs to man the office with his team of pet sitters.

I hope your 2016 got off to a good start. Oh! — some housekeeping things. First of all, you wanna enter this giveaway, because it’s the first one of the year, and you know what they say about that: “The first one is always the luckiest.”

Actually…I don’t know if that’s something they say…but I still haven’t picked a winner for this week’s mega super $250 mystery makeup giveaway yet, so the winner could still be you. Stay tuned. When I get back from my trip, I’ll assist Tabs with that.

OK, the smell of decaf is calling me, so I’m gonna go get ready for the aquarium. I’ll tell the otters you said, “Hey, girl, haaaaay!” Talk to you soon.

I simply prefer lipstick over lipgloss because it is not as slippery as the gloss. Also lipstick stays longer and since it is more pigmented you can play with colors. Right now I am in love with my Maybelline blushing beige lipstick!

The most unusual pet I’ve ever had is definitely my cat right now 🙂 He loves to sit on everything and the little fluffball likes to play games with us! Whenever we let him outside without a leash and start walking towards him to bring him back home, he’ll wait until we ALMOST catch up to him and then start running as quickly as he can while low to the ground!! Then, he’ll crouch down somewhere in the grass and repeat 🙂 He’s so silly! <3

Hi Karen and Happy New Year to you! I had my ears pierced as a baby, that was customary for my family. I’m having a hard time getting used to the matte liquid lipstick. I have one but always put a small amount of lipgloss over it because a girl’s gotta have some shine! My favorite lipstick formula is MAC’s Lustre, the perfect fit for me.

I found a beautiful moth once (or it may have been a butterfly… This was in the years before google) with a broken wing and kept him in a plastic bowl and took him outside every day to put on flowers. He would walk down the petals and stick out his long tongue and drink and then walk back up the petal onto my hand. He was a great pet tbh I even took him on a family road trip vacation! That’s gotta be my strangest pet haha

I was in my early 20s when I got my ears pierced, and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t getting any grief about it from my parents when I saw my family again, until I saw my great-aunt Gertrude — in her 70s, she had gotten her ears pierced, too!

Still or sparkling water? – Still, unless it’s lemon flavored and icy cold, then sparking is good!
When was the last time you rocked a scrunchie? Last year, before I chopped off all my hair. I wore them every night to keep my hair on top of my head so I didn’t choke myself with it/lay on it/ have the cats/husband lay on it.
What’s the most unusual pet you’ve ever had? 2 rats, box turtle
Lipgloss or liquid lipstick? Liquid Lipstick, KVD’s ELLs are my favorite!
How old were you when you got your ears pierced? Ummm…I have no idea! I know I was probably in middle school.
Do you have any birthmarks? No birthmarks, but I have a freckle/mole on my right aereola.

I got my ears pierced when I was about 35. My husband gave me a pair of lapis lazuli earrings that the jeweller said could be converted to clips – they couldn’t, and I had my ears pierced so that I could wear them. And then I lost one 🙁

Happy 2016 to you! That’s a great way to spend the weekend – in Monterey. I hope you, El Hub and Baby Girl have a blast at the aquarium exhibits! Last time I was there (about 2 years ago), one mischievous little otter kept following me around in his pool. Guess he thought I was one of the aquarium feeders? lol

Speaking of otters, did you read about a wild otter that gave birth in the outdoor tidepool recently (12/22)? She swam into the the sheltered cove to escape the storms, and then gave birth. I’m not sure if she’s still there or not, but what a good mama otter! She knew where it would be safe. 🙂

So glad you are getting away! But just remember you took sweet pea with you everywhere while pregnant so don’t be afraid to get out and about and take her with you when she arrives. When we traveled in Europe several years ago all I drank was “Water with bubbles”..as they called it. But I prefer still water here since I usually have bottles in the car, on my nightstand and on an end table. I’m not into lip gloss as it just feels too sticky. I prefer a stain. Did I mention that I made a trip to Sephora last week while visiting in Indy?? Oh my, I am going to have to hit it up rather then Ulta.

Hope you’re enjoying the Monterey Bay Aquarium. That place is so much fun. I love the otter feedings, the jelly fish and all the little kids running around having fun. That place is filled with the sound of joy! If you have time driving home (and if these are on Baby Girl’s GD diet) you should stop at Pezzini Farms for deep fried baby artichokes with aioli dipping sauce. They’re on Nashua Rd. just off of Hwy.1, the last exit before Hwy 156 heads over to 101. They also have a farm stand with tons of veggies. Last time I was there avocados were 7 for $1.00.

When I was younger my eyes used to shine whenever I’d see lipgloss. It was the most magical makeup starter item for a young girl like myself. As I grew older the more I tried out and used liquid lipstick, lipgloss became cheap looking to me. No matter what brand, color, or the cost it would always be that. Don’t get me wrong I’m glad I started out somewhere. Now that I’m older I’d definitely say liquid lipstick is the way to go!

My most unusual pet is actually a three-legged cat. I now a cat is not an unusual pet. However, as a child, I had a cat that got caught in a trap and had to have it’s front paw amputated. A number of years ago I got 2 cats (both rescues) and my one tried to jump onto an entertainment center and missed and fell onto a vase and severed her hind leg – which had to be amputated. So, I have actually had 2 cats with three-legs. After some tender loving care, they both got along great. I still have my most recent three-legged cat and she is doing great!

If I had to choose water, it would have to be sparkling water. I was once an avid soda drinker (eek!) but now transitioning into something with less sugar…sparkling H2O is now my go to.

I’ve had my ears pierced since I was 8….horrid experience, since it got infected twice. However, they’re still pierced, and I still wear earrings every now and then. 🙂

I never had an unusual pet but I went crabbing with my grandfather and brought home a turtle.

I was 17 and in nursing school when my ears were pierced with an 18 G needle by my friend . I have 4 more holes now!

So I am glad when you brought up that you drink sparkling waters from crox. I will say i wasn’t a fan of the taste but it helped kill my craving… I am now fully addicted to not only the crox flavors but i enjoy a good sparkling water. THANK YOU! They are perfect to keep hair out of my way when I am cooking in the kitchen, exercising(on the rare day I do) or in place of a shower cap(more eco friendly than a plastic shower cap, too).

Okay, I don’t know where Filipino culture stands with ear-piercing or your personal preference but I must share my experience with you.

I was four when my parents let me get my ears pierced and that was way too young, in my opinion. The holes were always getting infected and I tried and tried to let the holes grow back and they never would.

I probably wouldn’t have gotten them done so young but my best friend at the time’s mother worked at a jewelry store and did it free of charge.

Anyhoo, that’s all I’ll say. I hope you guys had a great break. Hugs to Tabs.

I can remember getting my ears pierced when I was about 7. I remember sitting in the chair wanting to get it done so bad but totally scared to death at the same time. My hands kept covering up my ears until I gathered enough courage to uncover them. This went on for about 15 min when finally my mom said,” it’s now or we are leaving” I tearfully have in and walked away proud of my new throbbing pierced ears!!! When my daughters were born, I knew right away they were getting theirs done as infants. Right after their 3 month vaccinations we were off to get them done. It may sound mean to some but they never remember the pain. I took good care of them so the piercing were never infected! As they were getting older they had no idea that their earrings were even there. They just grew up with them in and when bogey got older they loved them as they still do today.

Both! It depends on my mood and activity. For work I mostly use liquid lipsticks because of how long lasting they are and I think the matte look makes me look and feel more polished. For the weekend, bring on the lipgloss! I typically go for a natural look on the weekends (concealer, blush, and mascara) so need something easy going and shiny to top it off.

I had to wait until I was 13 to get my ears pierced. It was torture waiting because all my friends had their eyes pierced- so in the meantime my mom appeased me by buying magnetic earrings which always fell off. I was so happy when I turned 13!!

Hey Karen! Happy New Year to you and the family. I’m completely jealous of your Monterey trip right now. What I’d give to spend some time on a non-frozen beach. It’s going to be -25 (Celsius, because Canada) with the windchill in Toronto on Monday. Let that sink in. This weather is physically hurting me. I haven’t seen the sun in weeks. Weeks, Karen! Winter has come, and I hate every bit of it.

I’ve never really been a gloss girl, to be honest. Of course, I had my fair share when I started getting into makeup, but I haven’t found a formula that isn’t sticky or doesn’t move around the mouth or ball up and settle into lines. Plus, wind + lip gloss = a messy situation, especially if it’s something super sticky. So, matte liquid lipsticks all the way! I’m so happy brands are jumping on the bandwagon this year, because there’s so much variety now compared to when I first started getting into matte lips. I still remember seeing Kat von D’s original line of liquid lippies and freaking out. Bright colours AND something that’ll stay on through the day? Sign me up! Lolita was my first purchase, and I couldn’t get over how well it stayed on. Now, I’ve branched out into ColourPop – literally, their liquid lipsticks are a GODSEND – and I’m eagerly awaiting the return of Kat von D’s expanded colour selection to Sephora.

I can’t wait for baby girl to arrive! Hopefully she’s not giving you too much trouble yet, other than the whole sugar ban. Sending you lots of love!

Anyway, this last time I went hard core and did it at a tattoo parlor where they free-handed it with a (super sterilized) needle and no numbing stuff. It was pretty cool and didn’t hurt at all!

I got my ears pierced as an infant- mother said prolly between the age of 6-8 months. I was a bald baby so she said earrings saved her from nosy strangers, inquiring if I was a boy or a girl- even if I was donned in a pink ensemble. I had a second piercing when I was 16 and a third at 17. The last one has since healed up after I changed my mind about it. Second piercing got useful again (this year) with the advent of ear crawlers. Happy and safe travels!

I got my ears pierced when I was 5. My grandmother took me to get it done and afterwards, she decided that maybe she should have asked my mom first! So, she had me call my mom at work and ask her if I could get them pierced. Mom said it was ok if it was really what I wanted to do. My response? “Good, because I already did!!” I’m pretty sure my mom didn’t speak to my grandmother (after screaming at her for a few minutes) for at least a week afterwards! LOL

What’s the most unusual pet you’ve ever had?

A beautiful lichen I found on a log in my grandmother’s magical garden. She gave me a little tapestry covered square pill box on a gold key chain to keep him in. I’d open it and pet him and talk to him. His name was Michael. One day the clasp broke,(from my constant open and closing of the box), he’d fallen out and I hadn’t noticed. I was heartbroken! I eventually got a dog which was a more “normal” pet. I have always loved nature and shared that love with my daughter who is becoming a botanist. She loves the story of Mike the Lichen! Great question Karen and Tabs!

So i tend to overlook the stickiness and flyaway hair problems..

Hello Karen! Happy 2016, it’s going to be an amazing one for you, Hub, and baby girl!
I have a birthmark on the back of my neck right where my hairline stops. Luckily it’s small but the most interesting thing is that my daughter Olivia was born with the exact same one in the exact same place! It was so crazy but the fact that we both have it and in the same place is ironic. We talk about it, laugh about it and thinks it’s pretty cool. You never know what things whether it’s expressions, hands, toes, eye color, hairline or in my case birthmarks will be passed on to your kiddos— it’s interesting and shocking at the same time. It’s really cool to see and experience . I’m sure you will and you will be amazed!
Sparkling water for sure either lecroix because of the really delicious flavors or San pelligrino.
My mom pierced my ears at age 1. Italian tradition thing. I didn’t do the same for my daughter and she’s 12 and still hasn’t gotten them pierced!
Lipgloss for sure- I especially love Bobbi brown and bare escentuals!
Scrunchie- brings back memories as I was a cheerleader and the scrunchie totally rocked in those days which for me was the 80s! Ha!

The most unusual pet I ever owned were Roborovski hamsters, which are still pretty rare and usually only available from breeders rather than pet stores. They are the tiniest hamsters kept as pets, so I probably don’t have to tell you why I went through the effort of tracking down a breeder from across state lines willing to give them up for adoption.

Still or sparkling water? Soarkling. It settles my tummy. But I also drink lots of still.

When was the last time you rocked a scrunchie? Yesterday. It’s my go-to for getting my hair off my neck.

What’s the most unusual pet you’ve ever had? Ring-necked pheasants– 4H girl here.

Lipgloss or liquid lipstick? Liquid lipstck. I hate how sticky gloss is.

How old were you when you got your ears pierced? 13, then my parents let my sister pierce hers at 11 and I was so pissed.

Do you have any birthmarks? Apparently I did when I was born, but then it went away.

It was so tame it would sit on our shoulders and let us feed it. It would flap its wings on our shoulders and I remember it would tickle my neck! First confession in 2016: actually I’ve secretly visited your blog quite often since I spend lots of time googling reviews of beauty products. My skin is much less like yours (not pale nor dark) so I find your reviews helpful for me. Aaaaand…usually after done reading reviews, I still hang around to stalk your cat (I hope I don’t sound like a creeper by now uh-oh). This is random and completely unrelated to makeup but try search for “peco-japan”? Lots of cute kitties there! 😀

Hope it was restful and super fun before the baby girl comes! And I hope Tabs did ok in your absence. Simba goes nuts when we leave him at home. We took our other baby with us to Santa Cruz. I like both still and sparkling water. I like lipgloss, but it loses against windy days on the other hand liquid lipstick is really wind friendly however I noticed some colors that contain a white base tend to form white lines in my inner lips which looks worse than sticky gloss on its worst day. I got my ears pierced a day before my 13th birthday. I have a birthmark on my leg which is almost unnoticible except in summer because it doesn’t tan.
