My Honest First Impressions of Honest Beauty

April 5th, 2016 by Jen Clark 27 Comments

Review of Honest Beauty

I think Jessica Alba is one of the most gorgeous women ON EARTH, and I’ve been wanting to try her Honest Beauty makeup line.

“Honest Beauty is doing beauty differently. We’re proud to create a comprehensive line of skincare and makeup that celebrates diverse beauty and brings out your best.

“Every product has been years in the making and reflects the passion, expertise and standards of The Honest Company. With the advice and insights of top makeup artists, cosmetic scientists and beauty industry professionals worldwide, we’ve developed a collection that’s as effective as it is safe.

You’ll love the fresh, radiant look of your skin and the high-impact, flawless finish of our cosmetics. We’re here to make you look as good as you feel. And that’s honestly beautiful.”

Honest Beauty is geared toward natural products that are made without parabens, sulfates, mineral oil, synthetic fragrances and all of that other gross stuff that everyone seems to be wary of these days.

Honest Beauty review

I picked out a few things from the line to try, and here are my first impressions.

Honest Beauty Everything Primer Luminous Base ($27)

I haven’t always been a big primer user, but lately I’ve noticed that they do make a difference in how my makeup looks.

I love me a good glowy primer that’s going to shine through my foundation to make it look like I just have this naturally glowing skin, which I don’t. 🙁 Sad day.

Honest Beauty has this Everything Primer Luminous Base that I was particularly excited to try. Sadly, though, it doesn’t work well for me. While I think the glow is pretty, it seems to exaggerate the bumpy texture of my skin and cling to areas that are a little dry.

If you’re looking for a great luminizing primer, I wouldn’t splash out $27 on this number. I would go the more affordable route with something like L’oreal True Match Lumi Liquid Glow Illuminator.

Honest Beauty Luminizing Powder in Midnight Reflection ($25)

The Luminizing Powder in Midnight Reflection has been living in my Travel Makeup Bag ever since the first time I used it several weeks ago. It’s gorgeous when used as a subtle highlight, or when I use it all over my face when I want to resemble a disco ball (in a pretty way). It just makes the skin look glowing and perfect. That’s all I have to say about it. I love it; try it.

Honest Beauty Eyeshadow Trio in Smoky Gray ($25)

I’m having a hard time making up my mind about the Eyeshadow Trio in Smoky Gray. The three shadows all seem to have different textures and formulas. It’s weird. The slate gray shade is amazing, super soft and everything you could want in a shadow, while the gold-y shade is good, too… Nothing too special, but good! And the black, Honestly (sorry, I had to), isn’t bad at all, but it is just a lot firmer and less pigmented than the other two, maybe because of the nature of black shadows, but it just seems odd to me that all three shades are a little different from each other.

All in all, though, I like them!

Honest Beauty Velvet Eyeliners & Brow Fillers ($16 and $15, respectively)

Starting with my favorite of the two, the Brow Filler in Rich Brunette, I love this thing! There’s nothing particularly unique about it as far as brow pencils go, but for some reason it makes me have a really good brow day. It almost seems like the product clings to the hairs and makes them look a little bit thicker and, like, there are more of them. It’s a little hard to explain, but I’m a fan.

The True Velvet Eyeliners have made it into my makeup bag for one particular reason, which is that they don’t irritate my eyes.

My eyes are really sensitive, especially when I’m tight lining or lining my waterline. I haven’t been able to pinpoint the reason or ingredient that makes them water so bad, but these liners don’t cause me any problems.

The pigmentation is average, as is the staying power, but my eyes are happy with the ingredients.

Other than the black and gold, they also have a flesh-toned option that’s great for the waterline!

Honest Beauty Review

Honest Beauty has some awesome things out, and some not-as-awesome things. If you’re interested in giving the line a try, I would just do my research to find out which products work well for others. Always keep in mind, though, that you may love something that other people despise, and the other way around.

But hey! That’s part of the fun of being a makeup junkie, right? Happy experimenting! 🙂

Thank goodness they put up with the madness, because I love chatting about my favorite things with people who understand the addiction.

For some reason this range really appeals to me… But I think it’s going to be a while before it makes it to these shores (if ever).

I think Jessica Alba is one of the most beautiful women on this planet, but nothing from the range appeals to me that much that I feel the need to order it online. I will wait until it makes it´s way to Europe (if ever).

I agree, she’s so gorgeous! I know what you mean though, I have to be super intrigued to order something online. I’m not a huge online shopper haha!

I haven’t tried anything from this brand yet. The powder looks really pretty and natural. And the eye shadows look beautiful on you. Once I see the display at Ulta I will have to check out other shades.

I’m glad I’m not the only one who has problems with tightening/waterlining. It looks great for about five minutes, then my eyes start weeping and my liner is smeared all over the place. I fought the good fight.

I think these liners might be worth trying for you then! They didn’t bother my eyes in the slightest, which is unheard of!

I wish there were a couple more brights thrown in for variety, but I like the idea of this line and Jessica can do no wrong in my book.

It seems like things are very neutral with the line, they do have some fun lip colors though!

can you do a tutorial? I have trouble using any kind of dark smokey shadows without looking like I got punched in the face :/

Thank you so much! I actually just followed the little chart thing that you can see in the photo. 🙂 Darker shadows are super tricky to work with! I’ve found the best way to keep things from getting out of hand is having one brush for applying the color, then a completely clean brush just for blending the edges, and maybe even one more clean one to blend even more. Just move slowly and take your time blending and you’ll do amazing! 🙂

Thank you for reviewing Honest Beauty! I love jessica Alba, and was very curious about this line, as I have heard great things about her other products. I love the lipstick you are wearing – is it Honest Beauty, too? If not, what brand and color is it? I would love to find it. Thanks!

You’re so welcome! The lip color i’m wearing is actually super affordable, yay! It’s the NYX Lip Lingerie liquid lipstick in Lace Detail. I actually just featured it in my March favorites if you want to check it out! 🙂 http://www.jenleighbeauty.com/march-beauty-favorites/

I’m happy you reviewed Honest. I know it’s fairly new. But, I’ve only seen yours and one shadow palette reviewed thus far. It’s not out on display at my local store either. I’m looking forward to trying some of this brand!
