To me, few brands are more chic than By Terry. I’ve adored the unquestionably luxe line since the first time I spotted the brand while living in Paris. I still remember the thrill I got from splurging on my very first tub of Baume de Rose lip balm… How decadent it was! The rich, soothing cream never left my college purse until I’d used every last bit on my dry patches, cuticles and, of course, lips.

Later a good friend sent me Or de Rose, a golden shimmering take on the original, except with rose gold packaging, and I am still scraping to get out every last drop.

I jumped for joy and nostalgic excitement when, this past year, By Terry released Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur, a tinted version of her precious cult classic in a range of shades from berries to classic cherry reds and deep maroons.

For spring 2016, By Terry has added two new shades — Mauve Moon and Corail Stellar ($56 each) — the first in the line to contain subtle shimmer, and they’re just as stunning as their predecessors.

As a dry-lipped lass, I really appreciate the tinted take on By Terry’s classic lip balm formula, which I clearly love, as I’ve nearly demolished two pots of the original and two pots of the golden shimmering version, and Baume de Rose Nutri-Couleur easily lives up to the classic’s standard.

“The much-loved lip balm has now been given the Rose Infernale full-color treatment. This eye-popping palette ranges from chic and cheerful to innocent hushed hues and whimsical high-drama. The ever-luxurious formula pampers and soothes with softening rose flower essential wax, lipo-regenerating shea butter, free radical fighting vitamin E, restructuring ceramides, hydrating and smoothing filling spheres. Lips will lap up this deep-down long-lasting cure.”

Just as rich and moisturizing as the untinted version, the tinted rendition also has a wonderful rosy garden scent, which smells like real life roses and green stems.

I adore it but, as a word to the wise, if you’re sensitive to scented lip products, you may want to reconsider, as the rosy scent lingers on lips for a while.

(L to R): By Terry Baume de Rose in Mauve Moon and Corail Stellar

Mauve Moon, an exquisitely subtle lavender, pulls both pink and blue, depending on the light, and it shimmers, but it’s not overt. When carefully applied, it emphasizes my natural lip color ever so slightly. (I never thought I’d find a purple “my lips but better” shade, and yet here it is!)

Mauve’s coral cousin, Corail Stellar, is a delicate, shimmering peach that gives lips a classic springtime flush. Like Mauve Moon, it’s more opalescent than glittery when applied. I was pleasantly surprised by Corail Stellar, as I think it looks quite shockingly orange in the pot, but don’t be fooled. It’s an understated springtime peach ripe for the picking.

So, what turned By Terry’s Baume de Rose into a cult classic? The aura of self-pampering (#treatyoself) surely gets partial credit for its success. I mean, who among us doesn’t enjoy something luxurious from time to time?

For me, the formula really stands out, and it stands apart from other balms. It’s soothing, moisturizing, and thick, without feeling uncomfortable, and it stays with you, even overnight!

Corail Stellar is simply stunning, but I cannot get enough of subtly purple Mauve Moon. And silly as it may sound, the scent takes me back to those strolls along Boulevard Raspail in Paris on my way to class… Given this particular memory, I think By Terry has me hooked for life. 🙂

Being $56 each, these are definitely a splurge, so I’d love to know if you’ve tried Baume de Rose before, the original or the tinted version and, speaking of luxurious lips, what’s your favorite luxe balm?

I haven’t. I could never justify spending so much money on a lip balm. Nuxe Reve de Miel is my favorite, and that already feels like a splurge to me.

I also love Reve de Miel. Sometimes I just take leave of my senses when spending money on makeup. Don’t tell my husband. 🙂

They look completely terrifying in the pot! Wow! But Mauve Moon is lovely on you. I was gifted an original Baume de Rose before and used every last drop, it is a lovely formula, but the price! Dearie me! not sure I can justify the purchase for myself!

Agreed. When purchasing for myself I try to snag them on a website that offers a discount these days. Beauty.com, for instance, has a regular 20% off promotion that I take advantage of!

I have wanted to try the original for ages but it KILLS ME that it’ll cost me sixty bucks to get a lip balm shipped out.
is it really that different from, say, dior’s creme de rose? or doesn’t Chanel have a rose baume, too?
is the packaging at least larger or something? I mean, from the ingredients I can tell it’s a good product but it doesn’t seem **that** special to warrant the price… even if I am a sucker for almost anything rose.

you have absolutely peaked my interest with word of the golden version, though. that sounds lovely! 🙂 looking it up as we speak!

I think this may be a bit of a hyped product as it isn’t much different, to be fully honest, than Dior’s Creme de Rose. That said, it’s a lovely splurge even if the colored versions are less versatile. I was under the impression that Or de Rose was still available, but it does look like it may have been LE sadly?

I’ve been wanting to try the Baume de Rose forever, but still haven’t. I still can’t quite get over the price tag!

Man, that is expensive for what it is! But there’s no denying that Corail Stellar looks really pretty.

I don’t think I could spend so much on a lip balm but these are so tempting.

this is 20% off on Beauty.com right now for friends and family. while i like this balm and those 2 shades are very lovely on you i don’t find it as good as my nuxe reve de miel. this is a little more on the greasy side where as the nuxe feels more like a treatment. i’m a bit of a lip balm junkie. i have 3 of these the fig, cherry bomb, and the plain. i find the plain a better deal you get more oz in one jar and what i do is just use a lip liner and then the balm to color it.

Yes, I think Reve de Miel is the true work horse of the two. But these are frivolous fun. 🙂 Nevertheless, you make a good point about lip liner layering. I hadn’t thought of that.

It’s a favorite of mine that I just can’t afford right now but it’s one of the only things that works on my lips if they get too bad in winter. I don’t know by what wizardry but it really does. I have a ton of others I love and that work great through the year but that one takes the cake.

I sometimes wonder if its all in my head, because the ingredients aren’t that different from other balms. BUT, there is something about this one that really makes a difference for me!
