Bold Lips or Nude Lips?

November 11th, 2016 by Karen 27 Comments

red lips or nude lips
Bold lips? Nude lips? Decisions, decisions!

Which one do you like to wear more: nude lips or bold lips? Girl, you know me. I feel like a one-trick pony because all I do is wear nude lips, but I am trying to do Karen 2.0 and wear more bold lip colors.

So, I’m gonna say “bold lips 4 life” right now. This shade, by the way, that I’m wearing, that bold lip on the right, ’cause I know you’re gonna ask me — 🙂 — is The Body Shop Sydney Amaryllis Matte Lip Liquid.

That’s what I’m wearing. It’s a warm red, and it’s awesome. And the nude is from the Too Faced Funfetti set. It’s a lipgloss — a very warm nude, and super sheer. It’s nice if you just want a little sum’n sum’n.

How about you? Nude lips or bold?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIFFFFFFFFFF!!! What a week for the ages.

P.P.S. Happy Veterans Day!!!!

That’s too hard to choose! I definitely do nude more because I drink massive amounts of water and like to eat, but bold lips are fun!

I’m not wearing any makeup right now, I’m home with bronchitis – I’ve been sick for weeks. I feel bad because my coughing scared Jiji out of the bed where we were snuggling.

Ugh, bronchitis is the worst. I hope you get lots of good rest today. Any plans for the weekend (besides recovery)?

    Hi Karen,
Honestly I think you look beautiful with bold lips and nude..I was always a bright lip girl and never a nude lip girl, but im starting to kinda like the nude lip a little more. But I will never give up my bright lips. I love Tom Fords Two in one..its a brownish rose shade.
    Love it!
Also I have to mention that your eyes look gorg. with that eyeshadow..beautimus..

Thanks, Doreen! I feel out of practice with makeup so thank you for saying that the makeup looks OK. 🙂

Connor Claire is doing great. Did I tell you that she’s finally getting her teeth in?! It’s exciting, although I’m going to miss her gummy baby smile.

I’m loving a shade my sister gave me, Maple Shimmer by Gabriel. Perfect fall shade and kind of a mix of nude and color. If I top it with a sheer Buxom gloss, it reads as a rich nude. If I line and subtly mix it with a bright Nars red, it reads as an earthy rich color, which can be upped further with pink Buxom gloss on top. So in short, it’s the perfect lipstick base for my medium-rose complexion with yellow undertones. (I’ve got all the shades covered! Haha.)

A week for the ages, to be sure. Loving your site for a little down to earth, lighthearted focus on beauty this week! So, thank you!!

      Hi Amy,

I just *had* to look up this color because of your description. It looks lovely, like a perfect fall lippie. What does it smell like and taste like?

Nothing, really! It doesn’t smell or taste like anything obvious. It’s a nice creamy formula and easy to forget I have it on. Except that it looks so great. 🙂 I am seriously all about this lipstick!!

For you: both! You rock those! I’m really loving a bold lip on you. For me: nude lip 100%. Sigh, I can’t stop and I don’t like myself in anything bold even when I get compliments.

      Hi Laruen,

Nude lips are an addiction. 🙂 Honestly though there’s something to be said about being able to just throw on a nude lip and not have to worry about using lip liner or a lip brush or if your application is less than perfect… It’s so nice, right? Gah, I’m supposed to be on #teamboldlips but the nudes always call me back.

Happy Friday to you. What are you doing this weekend?

My favorite nudes are ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip in Lumiere 2 and Sleek Matte Me in Birthday Suit. For the reds, they are NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Morocco and Revlon Matte Lipstick in In the Red.

I’m a bright lip guy at heart but you know with stereotypes I only play safe and use nudes.

This week has been so harsh with Trump and fight with two friends so I’m over but tomorrow if my feet don’t hurt I’ll go to pride parade.

What are you doing for the weekend?

Sorry that you got into a fight with your friends. Hope you all can work it out soon.

This weekend I’m going to get my hair done, finally, because my roots are outta control. I’ve been covering them up with this root cover up spray and I’m so over it, LOL! That’s what I get for stretching out my hair appointments over too long a time.

If you go to Pride tomorrow have fun! Do you to study this weekend?

The closest i have come of a nude lip is soft brown lipstick i have is a kind soft milk chocolate with some pink on it. That is my day look if I want to wear something on my lips. Otherwise I will be wearing a dark lip a reddish plum, browinish plum, a dark red , or a black cherry. No matter wich color I wear the rest of my make up is neutral a peachy tan blush and matte or soft glittery nude eyeshadow subtly applied like a pink champagne or beige pink a hint of mascara and defined brows but not dark. My signature hair is a pony tail for work. Have a great weekend Karen.

I love brights and bold colours in theory-but the upkeep can be a pain.. I love eating and they’re not the most practical for smackers like me!! I love a nude lip-means I can go crazy on the smoky eye. You look great in both!

Hey Karen what was that nude lip color you had a few posts back about applying makeup in the car? I love the teething stage especially when there are only the two lonesome rangers at the bottom. She will look the cutest ever, my chubby little guy did. The worst part about teething is if they
develop a fever…. ay ay ay!

You look gorgeous either way, Karen!

I’m bold lips 90% of the time. I think I look much better with some bright color added to my face. Plus, since I have super-cool undertones and pretty fair skin, all those “peachy nudes” and warm beiges wash me out so bad that I look sick or worse. And, really, cool greyish taupes are not exactly considered ‘nude’ lips, even though they’re the neutral colors that look best on me. The closest I’ve come to a true MLBB is NARS Damage. Not exactly a ‘nude’ color.

But: bold lip colors looked much more dramatic on me when I was younger; it was much more of a ‘made up’ look when I wore bright fuchsia or magenta in my 20s or 30s than it does now that I’m 60. Why, I don’t know, but I think that’s true with other people, too. A friend of mine who’s in her early twenties says she quit wearing lipstick to work because people always commented on it (she’s got coloring like mine, so switching to ‘nude’ lip colors doesn’t work). No one comments on her very dramatic cat-eye eyeliner, but they do if she’s got color on her lips. And when you look at photos of women 60+ years old, you’ll see lots of us with bright-colored lips, and it looks good, and even expected.

One trick to make bold lips easier: I apply the lipstick straight from the tube. It’s impossible to get a totally crisp edge. That’s to be expected. I take one of those pointed-ended cotton buds made for makeup (they aren’t fuzzy and don’t shed lint) and VERY, VERY lightly and gently smooth out the edge of my lips with the edge of the flat end of the cotton bud. If there’s a smudge somewhere I’ll get what I can with the cotton bud, then run Cover Fx’s Perfect Pencil along the edge. Magic!

Have you tried Givenchy’s new Heroic Pink? It’s divine… and you pull off cool as well as warm lip colors so well, Karen!

Bold lips all the way! My current color is a purple lip crayon by Ulta called “Firecracker” and it’s a blue purple like cooked, smushed blueberries. It’s not specifically budge-proof but even when the color comes off, the lip stain remains. Some days I do a bright pink and I’m getting ready to add red back into the winter rotation. If I don’t wear lip color, I apply a lip oil or salve to stay hydrated. I personally don’t care for nude color on my lips.

You’re lucky you look nice in both, but nude colors give you a younger, softer look. Or more innocent. I look off in nudes and strong colors, so I stick to shades in the boring middle. If I had to choose though, I’d go with nudes. Less maintenance.

Bold all the way! I only tend to wear makeup when I’m dressing up, so a red lip is a must 🙂 I’ve got 2 different shades at the moment (a warm and a cool) as well as a slighly more understated lip tint.
