What Are Some Makeup Products You’re Using More (or Less) Now That It’s Really Cold?

No, seriously, it’s THIS cold!

Creams. I’ve been wearing a ton of creams lately — cream foundation, cream blush, cream highlighter. More than usual. Basically, with this colder weather and the heater cranking, my skin has been extra dry. It gets painful, so I’ve been wearing more products with an emollient base.

And it doesn’t even get really, really cold here like it does back east! I can’t even imagine how painful your skin must get sometimes if you live somewhere that gets below zero.

Creams definitely help me, and they last longer on my skin now than they do in summer. Heck, on really hot days in July, I’ll barely make it out the front door before I’ve already sweated (sweat?) away any cream products, but when it’s colder like now and my skin is drier than usual, it craves cream products and holds onto them better.

Hourglass Vanish Seamless Finish Foundation is one I’ve been wearing a lot. Another one is Kjær Weis Cream Foundation, which is GREAT. It’s one of those that doesn’t look like you’re wearing anything, but it has pretty good coverage (I also like their Cream Blush).

Also, creamy, peachy pearl MAC Cream Colour Base in Hush has been my go-to highlighter as of late.

I notice that I haven’t been using as many powder products lately for my face. I mean, I’ll still set my cream foundation with a little bit of powder (MAC Mineralize Skinfinish is a favorite), but I’ll just the smallest amount.

When my skin gets really dry like this in winter and I use too much powder, the particles settle into my pores and fine lines, and I swear…it ages me. I look older. And as I get into my 40s — and we are gettin’ in there! — the less I wear, the younger I look.

How about you? What makeup products are you using more (or less) now that the weather’s colder?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I’m not using straight sunblock. I won’t be using it until at least May.

I’m using heavier moisturizers. I tend to grease up at night so my skin has a chance to soak up the moisture.

I use minimal amounts of powder year round because of my dehydration-prone skin. I’ve been amping up my use of sheet masks and adding more layers of hydration to my routine – mists, serums, creams, etc. And I’m trying to be good about using my humidifier, since that helps both skin and sinuses.

Creams as well, but set with a powder. That way they stay put and don’t settle into any fine lines.

My makeup hasn’t been on point since I returned from vacation, unfortunately.I don’t know why! Maybe I’m just in some kind of rut. So lately I have felt really sloppy! I only notice myself using heavier moisturizers now that it’s cold.

More cream and oil products. Paula’s Choice Oil Booster serum, Smashbox Photo Finish Oil primer, heavier moisturizers and night creams …. but now I also need that Kjaer Weis cream blush and discovered they have a store on Fillmore Street! Guess where I’ll be this Saturday? Perhaps I’ll meet you there? 😀

My new jam is Deborah Lippmann’s The Cure Nail & Cuticle Repair. And O’Keefe’s Healthy Feet foot cream. Really, anything involving moisture. So dry!

I’m using my face oils, my dermatologist recommended oils that contain Huile so over the years I’ve just about collected every face oil that has Huile in it!

My husband uses this Alaffia coconut spray that’s a toner and moisturizer. In the summer I don’t gravitate to it, but in the winter it’s a lovely fresh, dewy spritz after showers and before bed. The smell is great and doesn’t linger.

Definitely using more of my moisturizing bases. Getting into my 30s I find that in the winter I’m getting more drier skin, so surprisingly this winter I was on the hunt for a good hydrating moisturizer. Using first aid’s ultra creamy moisturizer and best time to use MUFE water blend foundation. Surprisingly, because of the new moisturizer, I’ve been laying back on an old fav the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer and going to another old fav the Tarte Amazonian Clay powder foundation; yes that’s right powder! Crazy as it sounds, it’s a quick and easy go to and it helps that moisturizer helps this stick on better despite the dry Bay Area weather.

I don’t think my skin is really affected by the weather (possibly because it’s humid cold here – which actually sucks – rather than dry cold), so not much changes in that department, but in the colder months I find myself reaching for eyeshadows a lot more than in the summer.

Moisturizing cream and intense dry skin cream, definitely! And fragrances that don’t smell too fruity.

I wear a lot more cream products during the cold months of the year, too, Karen! I love the Make Up For Ever HD cream blushes and the Bite Beauty Multistix, BECCA cream and liquid highlighters, cream contour and highlight from Kevyn Aucoin. Or I just use lighter and darker shades of the Hourglass foundation sticks to highlight and contour — that makes it super-easy. Or the Dr.Jart+ BB Mate Contouring 123 Kit with their Black Label Detox BB cream or their Premium BB cream. Gee, I didn’t even think until now about how many options I’ve collected! I find that I can still wear the Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powders without getting that powdery look, but by next month I’ll be changing my primer from Hourglass Veil Mineral primer to their No. 28 Primer Serum. It’s amazing how much difference a different kind of primer can make to the final finish of a look. I’ll even change my setting spray from Urban Decay All-Nighter to Chill.

I change my moisturizers, too. I keep the same toners or essences and serums for antioxidants, AHAs and BHAs, retinol, etc., but change the moisturizer I put on top. In summer I like the basic First Aid Beauty Face Cream under makeup, CeraVe PM moisturizer at night. In winter I change to FAB Ultra Repair Face Cream under makeup, Paula’s Choice Clinical Ultra Rich moisturizer at night, and sometimes add a few drops of argan oil. I’m experimenting with more products from Josie Maran, as well, since I got some samples. I’ll even change how I remove my makeup, switching from dual-phase removers to coconut oil as the weather gets colder and central heating sucks moisture out of my skin. I’m thinking about getting a humidifier for my bedroom this winter, as well. My skin has changed from super-oily to combo normal/oily over the years, but my feet, hands, and under my eyes can get really, really dehydrated in the winter. For hands during the day I use Derma Topix Intensive hand cream, because it really does last through some handwashing, and at night I rotate Paula’s Choice RESIST Skin Revealing Body Lotion With 10% AHA, First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream, CeraVe Moisturizing Cream and CeraVe Renewing SA cream.

Dark lipstick comes out almost daily, usually a bit more sparkle, and red lips too. My makeup in the late spring, summer, and early fall is lighter overall usually with pink, pink red, magentas, and coral. I also usually just do a wash of color on my lids in those times too because it looks fussy in the hot months to do a 5 shadow eye look, where in the fall, winter, early spring it look more appropriate to me.
