In What Order Do You Apply Your Makeup?

May 7th, 2009 by Karen 92 Comments

040609-in-what-order-do-you-apply-your-makeup-1

The other day a friend of mine asked me what order I apply my makeup in.

Most of the makeup artists I know suggest starting with concealer, foundation and powder, but I prefer to do my eyes *first*. That way, if (when) I make a mess, I haven’t gotten too far into the overall look, and things are still easy to clean up. 😉

After completing my eyes, I’ll finish with face, cheeks and lips.

Here’s my usual order. Really, all of these steps are optional. That’s the thing about makeup. There are more options than colors in a rainbow:

  1. Eyeshadow primer
  2. Eyeshadow
  3. Liner
  4. Mascara
  5. Brows
  6. Concealer
  7. Foundation
  8. Powder
  9. Blush
  10. Bronzer
  11. Lip liner
  12. Lipstick
  13. Lipgloss

I wonder if anyone else does it like I do… In what order do you apply your makeup? 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

    1. Tinted moisturizer — allow it to soak in before putting anything over it.

    2. Eyeliner.

    3. Mascara.

    4. Eyeshadow.

    5. Powder.

    6. Bronzer — if I’m going to, that is. 😉

    7. Blush.

This is the process I developed for “I’m running late for _____!” but it really isn’t different than how I’d do it with all the time in the world. This just seems the most efficient pattern for me.

    What a great question, Karen!

I do it exactly in your order, every single step is the same (expect for the lipliner. I don’t use a liner).

    Hi Karen!

Here’s the order of “business” most days:

    1. MAC Face Primer SPF 50
    2. MAC Prep & Prime Eye
    3. Foundation
    4. Concealer
    5. Curl lashes
    6. Shadow
    7. Liner
    8. Mascara
    9. Blush
    10.Lip color/gloss

    Pretty much same idea:

Eyes first – prime, then shadow
…but then I do my brows
and then undereye liner and mascara

    Then undereye concealer.
Foundation if I feel so inclined.

    Blush, then maybe highlight/bronzer.

    Then lips.

Oh, I forgot! BROWS! That’s usually Step 5 before lash curling.

I tend to remove all color from my face, then replace it in a top-down fashion. There are times I’ll do things differently, but I usually use this order:

    1. Concealer
    2. Foundation
    3. Eyeshadow primer
    4. Brows
    5. Eyeliner (I have to do this one before eyeshadow because it cleans up easier when I goof!)
    6. Eye shaadow
    7. Bronzer (if I use it)
    8. Blush
    9. Mascara
    10. Lipstick

    1. Concealer (lets me see how much foundation I need)
    2. Foundation (optional, some times substitute with buffing in loose powder onto moisturiser, it melts in and looks lovely)
    3. Powder (optional)
    4. Highlighter & Bronzer (optional)
    5. Eye shadow (rarely liner)
    6. Lips stick or gloss
    7. Blush (last because some times you need less when you’re done with everything else or you find you need a different colour to balance the look)

I love the idea of doing the eyes first but I’m kind of worried that I’ll end up doing and redoing them over and over again because I’m most creative with my eyes and also a neat freak with OCD tendencies so when I do the face first I kind of have to commit to whatever I did with the eyes and it saves time in the long run.

    I do this:

    – TM
    – concealer
    – e/s primer
    – e/s
    – e/l
    – mascara
    – brows- fill in, then clear brow gel
    – cheeks- blush, bronzer or both
    – lips (usually start the day with a l/s and switch to l/g when I get lazy!)

i usually perfer to start with the foundation first cus it works as an eye primer when i’m in a hurry

    BodyShop tinted sunblock
    eyeshadow
    eyeliner
    mascara

I’m always rushing in the morning, so I’ve come up with a technique that only takes about five minutes.

    1. Concealer
    2. Foundation
    3. Blush
    4. Eyeshadow (wet the brush to turn the same color into a darker version of the shadow to use as liner)
    5. Mascara
    6. Occasionally, lipstick

Similar to you, except, while hair is still in aquis towel,

    1. Tinted moisturizer
    2. Bare Escentuals foundation

Then, take hair down, volumizer, leave in conditioner, blow dry a little of the wetness out…

    then…

    eyes,
    blush/bronzer
    mascara

    then finish hair.

Normally I do it this way, though on confusing mornings where I have very little sleep (thanks in part to my night job and then classes during the day) I may do something different.

    1) moisturizer
    2) foundation
    3) MAC blot powder (fav. product!!! XD )
    4) eyeliner
    5) eye primer
    6) eyeshadow
    7) eyeliner (first time is just to serve as a basis)
    8) mascara
    9) blush
    10) bronzer
    11) lips (includes lipstick and gloss) but I don’t usually do this. Usually just chapstick.

Hey Karen, yep I do the same thing too. I try to do my eyes first coz eyeshadows tend to have fallouts and I dont want it to go under my eyes in which I already have a huge problem with.

Oh yeah, have you found a nice concealer in which you can perfectly cover up scar marks on the face which is long lasting? I am currently using Mac concealer in a tube thingy but it tend to fade away really quick and I am also using Sonia Kashuk’s concealer and I still have the same problem.

    Thanks.

This is my go-to-work regiment. Keeping in mind all this takes about 5 minutes for me.. my hair takes literally 30 minutes! (All the blowing, flattening, prepping, sealing.. my hair is too much darn work.)

    1. Dot redness w/”canmake” UV base (a GOD-SEND)
    2. “Fresh” twilight primer
    3. Concealer (sometimes if I have a zit or something)
    4. Bronzer (brand depends on my mood)
    5. Eye brightener of choice (I have dark, dark rings around my eyes)
    6. Two drops of minty eye drops in each eye (a MUST)
    7. Eye shadow
    8. Check stain or loose powder blush
    9. Gold or sparkly lip base
    10. Lip stick or lip gloss
    11. Spritz of mac fix-it!

The eye drops are a must 100%. By the time I get home from work it’s like, 10 or 11pm. Then I gotta wake up at 7 am to do it all over again. I’m surprised not many people consider eye drops a necessary part of their beauty routine! Nothing worse than a fab face with red eyes lol

You know it’s funny you mention this because just this morning I was thinking, as I was ruining my concealer whilst trying to line my eye, that I am doing this all wrong! I have always done foundation/concealer/primer/powder/brows and blush before eyes but I am going to try it your way. 🙂

    “Business” morning:
    1) Wash face (Boscia Purifying Cleansing Gel)
    2) Eye drops (the most vital step!)
    3) Moisturizer with SPF (Clean & Clear Day)
    4) Primer (MAC Prep + Prime)
    4) Concealer for face and under-eye brightening (BeneFit Erase Paste)
    5) Finishing powder (BeneFit Hello Flawless)
    6) Blush (NARS Orgasm)
    7) Eyeliner (Dior Waterproof Crayon Eyeliner in Intense Brown)
    8) Mascara (Lancome Hypnose)

    Going out:
    9) Eye makeup base (Too Faced Shadow Insurance)
    10) MAC Paint Pot in Bare Study
    11) Urban Decay Ammo Palette

*Numbers 1, 7, 10, and 11 are all birthday presents I received less than a week ago. I love them all, too. 😀
I’m starting to think I should do eye make-up first though, since, as you said, it’s a lot easier to clean up as the first step.

Yes I noticed that too. But I read you should apply your foundation first. And it works for me. This is my order.
      1) eye primer like foundation.
      2) eye shadows.
      3) eye liner.
4)curl lashes. (i have very long heavy and straight lashes so I turn my hair dryer in hot for a few seconds. The heat helps lift the them.)
      5) brows. (pluck and shade in.)
      6) I use a yellow shade of concealer. (because i have dark circles under my eyes)
      7)foundation then natural shade concealer.
      8)powder to set
      9) blush
      10) lipstick/ lipgloss.
This is what works for me because if u make a mess (like me) it’s very easy and fast to clean up without messing everything else up.

    3. Eyeshadow
    4. Eyeliner
    5. Mascara
    6. Moisturizer
    7. Tinted SPF moisturizer (hate, hate, HATE foundation)
    8. Concealer–why do all that concealing work just so it gets erased when I put on my tinted moisturizer?
    9. Blush
    10. Lipstick or Lipgloss

Sometimes, I have to put on things faster so some steps are skipped.

    4. eyeshadow base

The same way you do, minus the lipliner…I do that only when wearing dark lips. I used to do my makeup starting with foundation, but since indulging in a huge eyeshadow fetish, that has changed 🙂

I pretty much have the same routine as you do, except I don’t use bronzer. It is confusing sometimes, some people like to do their foundation first while others prefer to start with the eyes. I think starting from the eyes is better, if I mess up I only need to wipe my eye makeup away instead of removing the whole face makeup.

    Karen,
Here’s my list. It changes alot!

    MAC Primer (if needed)
    MAC Moisture Cover Concealer
    MAC Studio Fix Powder
whatever Lipbalm or chapstick is handy
    blush
    curl eyelashes

Once outside ie the church parking lot or el bus…
    Lipstick or gloss

I don’t need to do brows really because I have really strong brows. They just need to be brushed into place. If I do eye makeup I have to make sure that the allergens aren’t going to attack my poor eyes once I’m outside. Unfortunately this has been happening alot so it’s been no eye makeup or very little this season. 🙁
