10 Things That Go Through Your Head When You Really Don’t Want to Wash Your Makeup Brushes

January 27th, 2017 by Karen 11 Comments

dirty makeup brushes

  1. This would be a good time to catch up on my reading. 🙂 I’ve been meaning to finally finish War and Peace, the Lord of the Rings trilogy and Gone With the Wind. ?
  2. Pff, what’s one more day gonna do?? They’re just going get dirty again anyway…
  3. Maybe the Makeup Brush Cleaning Fairy will stop by while I’m sleeping and wash all my brushes. Then I’ll wake up tomorrow morning, and they’ll be all pristine and organized in my brush caddy. 🙂
  4. I can’t do it right now! I have too many more pressing things on my to-do list. I still haven’t watched the last episode of ? Mariah’s World, and it’s been sitting on my DVR for weeks!!!
  5. Eh, as long as there isn’t any glitter or creams on my MAC 224 or 217, I’ll be fine.
  6. Ooh! I can’t think of a better time to use my last clean face brush on my ? cat’s cheeks!
  7. I’ll just do my makeup with my fingers tomorrow. (Side note: yeah, right.)
  8. If I do a look tomorrow with the same colors that are on this dirty eye brush, I should be totally fine… I mean, what are the odds that I’m going to suddenly feel compelled to do an electric neon purple and green look? (Side note: this never happens.)
  9. I just won’t wear any makeup ? tomorrow. (Side note: again, this never happens.)
  10. I mean, if something big happens tomorrow, like if Ryan Gosling ? finally calls, I’ve always got those tiny little sponge applicators… They should work in a pinch. 🙂

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

P.S. TGIF! 🙂 Have a fantastic day.

Hahahaha! I take about 5 minutes to prepare my brushes for proper cleaning. I wash them once with Dr. Bronner’s Lavender soap, then wash them again but the second time they go in a bowl of warm water for a 15 minute soak. I find this method doesn’t try my patient.

Take care. Soaking is not recommended as it can weaken the glue causing bristle fallout. Some manufacturers even recommend not even letting water go up to the ferrul.

    Good morning Karen 🙂
Yikes ! I clean my brushes every single day…I know I’ll have to replace them sooner but I’d rather do that than risk break outs or an eye infection :/
On a side note, have you ever checked out RueLaLa for cosmetics or fragrances ?
It’s a gold mine…Chanel, Dior, Laura Mercier etc. And not the strange colors, great stuff ! Happy Friday !

I’m so with you on this, Karen. Isn’t it amazing that we can send people to the moon but no one has patented an automatic makeup brush washer?! Mechanically speaking, it can’t be that complex.

As funny as this post is, I have solved that problem by not using as many brushes. For the most part, I use fingers for foundation & concealer (just pat in after using the doe foot applicator). I skip face powder because my skin is too dry. The only brushes I use regularly are blush and maybe an eye shadow brush. I have even started using my fingers for powder eye shadow. it works for a simple look. I wash the few brushes once a week with a fragrance free, organic shampoo and air dry them. Keeping things simple!

I spot clean daily with a brush cleanser that also disinfects and wiping the brushes off on a microfibre cloth, so when it’s time to deep clean that goes over pretty quick. 🙂

These are spot on Karen! No 2 also goes for when I need to wash the beauty blender (my least favourite activity of the day!)

LOL! Washing my makeup brushes is a chore that seems bigger than it really is, with a good cleanser, and a silicone bristle scrubbing thingie, and microfiber cloths, and brush guards, and a brush tree… although of course I hate waiting for them to dry. One good reason for having lots of good brushes, so that you still have good brushes to use while your really dense ones take their time drying! I try to keep my brush tree about three to five feet from an air conditioner in summer, a radiator in winter, but humid weather can still slow things down!

I’m actually a fanatic for cleaning my eye and lip brushes right after I use them (I’ve started to get that way about any brush that I use with a liquid or cream product, actually), and wiping the other ones thoroughly on a microfiber cloth as soon as I’m done using them, so I don’t have a pile of really dirty brushes to clean very often.

I never try to get out of it, really, I just go ahead with it and get it over with, otherwise I keep thinking about it! 🙂

I haaaate washing my brushes, but here’s the thought that seriously motivates me to do it: “What if some terrible bacteria is flourishing on my brushes now and I’ll just put it on my face and then get an infection that needs $3000 antibiotics?!” (That’s about how much my dad’s last-resort antibiotics last year were. Thank goodness for insurance!) This line of thinking helps! As does a quick daily brush cleaner…

HAHA! Mine is always “I only use it for the one blush” and “it’s too late and I don’t think it will be dry by tomorrow morning”. Nice to know we are all procrastinators. 🙂
