The Birthday Girl

March 6th, 2017 by Karen 46 Comments

Happy birthday, Connor Claire!

Connor’s first birthday lasagna was a smash super hit! Of course, I’m exhausted from all the festivities (hosting is fun but tiring, am I right?!), but it was all worth it.

She’s excited about cake

“What are we supposed to do with this candle, mom?”
Connor’s birthday lasagna pan (I found it at Marshalls last week)
The birthday lasagna
Mmm, birthday lasagana!
Pancit, a Filipino noodle dish. The long noodles represent long life, so it’s a staple at birthday parties!
Lumpia, which is a Filipino version of an egg roll

Someone is serious about birthday cake

Hello, baby
Happy birthday, Coywolf

The last year went by so fast at times, but slow at others. Every day she gets closer to being a little girl and father from her baby-hood. It’s bittersweet!

Do you ever eat lumpia with vinegar and garlic sauce? It’s SO good!

Nothing too exciting but a lot of these new releases from diff companies are pretty exciting.

      Hi Anne Marie and Rosie,

Oh gosh! I just realized I should’ve asked you for a lasagna recipe! Do you have one that you love?

      Happy Monday to you!

      Karen,
I wish I could give you a recipe, but I cook like my Italian grandmother–a little of this, a little of that.
I will tell you that a “secret” ingredient in her sauce is to take half a teaspoon(or more) of dried fennel seeds and crush them between fingers and put in the sauce–the Bomb!

Awww such a cutie! Happy birthday Connor Claire!

On a side note: I love lumpia too… the Indonesian version probably a bit different than a Filipino one, but we have a Filipino restaurant in Berlin that serves a version that is not deep fried, I love that one too (mmm… hungry just by the thought of it)

      Hi Astrid,

My next door neighbor is Indonesian and an amazing cook! I’d never had Indonesian food until I met her; it’s so good.

Oh that’s so nice!! I still don’t know what authentic Filipino food taste like, we’ve a few restaurants in the city, but I bet it’s no match for the real thing.

I get excited about cake too, Connor Claire.

My friend’s mom came to town once and wanted to have a big party for all of her daughter’s friends, so she cooked a lot of Filipino foods and we had such a good time! I got sent home with a huge Ziploc of pancit.

LOL, that sounds about right! We had a ton of leftovers, so I sent my family home with food, and gave a bunch to my neighbors. If/when you come visit Novato I’ll try to hook you up!

OMG! The cuteness is off the charts! I love the picture of you holding her and she’s looking straight into the camera. Her outfit is just adorable, too. But where was my invite? You had all those yummies and I didn’t get invited? I would’ve brought a HUGE and FASHIONABLE gift for Connor Claire. Did she eat anything or was she too excited?

She is just too adorable for words!! I’m glad your family was able to spend Connor’s first birthday with her! 🙂 Your meal looks delish. What frosting flavor did you have for the cake? We have done cupcakes for the boys since they were small because one loves coffee frosting and one does not (he’s a chocolate frosting guy). Also, the dress torso? Is that a regular dining room decoration? Do you dress it in different outfits? Inquiring minds want to know!! 🙂

Thank you, GlossBerry! It’s been a bittersweet year. I love seeing her get older, but it’s also hard to let go of her no longer being a baby. I was just looking at pictures of her from this day a year ago. She was only a week old, and the teeniest, tiniest thing.
