Have You Ever Cut Your Own Bangs?

April 5th, 2017 by Karen 15 Comments

k scissors

Well, there was a time back in my hair-bear days, around 14 and 15, when I would take any old pair of scissors and just, like, trim my bangs willy-nilly.

I purposefully cut them choppy and at different lengths because I wanted “a layered look” (seriously, Karen?!), even though I really didn’t understand what that meant…

The front looked crazy, dude! But I didn’t care. As long as those bangs were high and lacquered such that not even a category 5 hurricane could fell them, I was happy. 🙂

But I’d never attempt it now. I think I’ve gotten progressively less coordinated over the years. I probably shouldn’t be manipulating scissors anywhere near my face.

I don’t know… I can see myself trimming off an eyebrow or a big chunk of my lashes by accident. Or poking an eyeball, OMG!

Bangs! Have you ever cut yours? (I’m hoping that your story ends on a positive note.)

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Ha! Totally. All the time! I even cut my own bangs into my hair. More $$ left for lipstick!

Once in middle School. I didn’t get it straight so I cut it again. Still didn’t get it straight, cut it again. This continued until I had about an inch left! This was the late 90s when big bangs were in so I was DEVASTATED. Never did it on my own again!

Bahaha I totally used to! Started back in Jr. High. They weren’t even real bangs. They were like… weird pieces of jaw-length hair in the front of my face. Remember when folks would pull back their hair and have “strands” in front? It was like, a horrible version of that. (I distinctly remember my dad looking at me and being like, “Shannon… did you cut your hair??” and I was transported back to being 5 years old, wondering how my parents could tell I had cut some hair off my head when I had *specifically* hidden the cut hair underneath other things in the garbage can.)

I also decided to cut my own straight-across bangs when I was like, 22. WHY. It was… livable, but not “good” by any means. I definitely felt the need to apologize to the next hairstylist I went to, lol.

I’m a little over bangs at the moment (hooray low maintenance!), and have been trying to grow mine out with the rest of my hair. Slowly but surely!

I did cut my bangs many years ago, and looked like Jim Carey’s character from Dumb and Dumber. Not very attractive at all. I don’t do bangs anymore. Lesson learned!

All the time, my friend! I learned a little trick from my stylist that keeps them looking decent so I can extend the time between appointments with a REAL professional. HAHA! In fairness, I do have pro shears so I wouldn’t attempt with drugstore or kitchen versions. 🙂 Blunt cut when wet (leave them long). Then dry, twirl them all together into a twist with the ends hanging loose and make a few vertical snips to texturize the bottom quarter inch or so. It must also be said that I wear them side-swept. I would not trust myself to have straight, blunt cut bangs (that looked halfway decent). 🙂

Yes. I cut my own bangs on the night before my grandmother’s 90th birthday party, in her bathroom at about 2am? I was 23, and for whatever reason I was convinced that if I didn’t cut bangs (for the first time since I was 12!) I would look dirty and awful at this party. So I did it, and of course my mother guilted me and reminded me how long they’d take to grow out, but I rocked them for a year or two and then let them go and it wasn’t so bad.

When I was 5, I attempted and my mother had to correct. The micro bang was born.
Then I earned a cosmetology degree at the Jean Madeline Aveda Institute — South Philly represent — (I needed something to balance the JD/MBA) and I save dough on performing my own services (even, uh, waxing). I wish I could take my head off and cut my entire head. I *so* know what I want and can do it!

Yes, done it a few times with decent results. But having curly hair really can be a disadvantage in this case. But there are lots of options with bangs!

YES. When I was 13. Let’s just say that Pugsley Addams looked less creepy than I did.

Once. When I was in third grade. About a week before my first communion. Very, very, very short and uneven. The first person to see me was the nun teaching my class. She screamed, “Ack! You look like a plucked chicken!” in front of the whole class. My mother almost died, because you know, my photos were going to look terrible.
Don’t wear bangs anymore. I hate hair in my eyes. Guess I always have.

When my niece, Megan, was little she told her mum (my sister) that she was bored of having a fringe (that’s bangs on my side of the pond!). She then grabbed a pair of scissors she’d been using for some art she was doing and chopped off a HUGE chunk of her fringe! My sister took her to the hairdressers to see if there was anything they could do, but the remaining hair was about the length of the bristles on a toothbrush so all they could advise was that my sister give Megan a comb-over every day until the hair grew again, which I have to admit I thought was hilarious.

Yes, I still do sometimes. Although my bangs are very, very long, so I am not sure if they still qualify as bangs. But while being on maternity leave I cut my own hair all the time, there was no money left to go to the hair dresser. Or time left, for that instance.

I’ve cut my own bangs for eons! When I was a young teen, Sasson’s precise geometric cuts were all the rage. Needless to say, keeping them sharp and edgy required constant upkeep and so I learned how to do my own maintenance between visits to the salon. When I grew my hair out, I just continued doing my own bangs.

I can’t live without bangs, have had them my entire life. I’ve got a little pixie cut, and I’ve trimmed my bangs just a tiny bit in the past in the past, but I’ve never really had much temptation to cut my own hair. With hair this short it could turn into a nightmare very quickly.
