Fenty Beauty by Rihanna Killawatt Freestyle Highlighter

fenty beauty killawatt highlighter review
Just the highlights, please.

Is the spelling of Fenty Beauty’s Killawatt (with an “a” instead of an “o”) Freestyle Highlighter giving you lyfe? Yes, that’s lyfe with a “y,” as in Yacht Lyfe, one of the cream hylighters highlighters in the line.

I’m an absolutely terrible speller, but I love all the creative spelling liberties being taken.

Side note: imagine a Fenty Beauty spelling bee. Iytte whud bhee krai!

The Killawatt Highlighters are $34 each and available now in six shades at Sephora, along with the rest of the cruelty-free Fenty Beauty by Rihanna line, and if you have semi-functional eyes, you can probably tell that they’re gorgeous. They’re shiny, glittery and va-va-va-voom! — reflect light to the max, which is trés trendy at the moment, so if you want highlights so bold that you could send an SOS across the universe, you’ll probably be into them.

I think they’re a lot like the BECCA Shimmering Skin Perfectors, except flashier, more pigmented and generally more OTT.

They’re a little too frosty for me, though, so I’ve decided to skip them.

Not to say that I wasn’t tempted at the store. I came close to getting Mean Money/Hu$tla Baby, one of the split pans. It has a fetching champagne on one side and a peachy champagne on the other (some of the highlighters have two shades, and some only have one). I put it in my basket a few times, took it out, put it in, took it out, put it in…but then I ultimately left without it because I knew that the high-beam shimmer and my pores just wouldn’t get along.

I can absolutely see why so many makeup lovers are losing their damn minds over these. I get it, because on top of their bo$$-lady bling factor, the pigments and creamy powders aren’t playing around. I love the idea of them, but in terms of practical use, they aren’t my cup of tea.

And, yes, I did just use dollar $$ signs in a word. RIRI MADE ME DO IT!

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

I felt like the duos had different finishes: the shade on the left was more subtle and pearly while the shade on the right was more sparkly, across the range. I didn’t buy any either, the lightest one looked nice but not so different from what I already have. The gold Trophy Wife is pretty but definitely not for my skintone, and the single light Metal Moon looked a bit powdery.

Yup, my thoughts exactly. Maybe it was because of my age, but I don’t like a whole lot of glitter on a daily basis. And I learned to buy products I (at least thought) will wear on a regular basis.

Well, if nothing else, the misspelling/liberties get my attention. HAHA! Frosty skin products are definitely a pass for me. I can see the appeal for others, though. 🙂

I thought they were called Killawatt as in Killer Watt. Like man these highlighters are killer! I breezed in and out of my local Sephora yesterday and completely forgot to look for this display, because I was looking for the YSL Tatouage lip colors. They just rearranged where everything is located in the store and I have to walk around in circles to find the displays I want.

I purchased a cream highlighter and one of the duos. I agree with your assessment; the powder duo do nothing for those pores. I have Ginger Binge/Moscow Mule in the duo and Rum in the cream. Rum is not so bad on the face and eyes, but I tried to highlight right above the tail of my eyebrow and that was. Bad idea. I had texture showing all day. The killawatt highlighter in Ginger Binge is the less shimmery one and it also shows a little rptexture on the face. It’s also hella shimmery, almost like what you think Moscow Mule will be. I also found myself trying to blend it all day. I “thought” I blended it when I applied it. Parent key not because every time I caught myself in the mirror, I saw where it started and ended and I had the urge to blend it, unsuccessfully. The conclusion I came to is the products are great quality but the aesthetic is just not for me. I’m old! I like things to be a bit more subdued and natural looking.
