Selfies: Love ’em or Loathe ’em?

November 10th, 2017 by Karen 13 Comments

Smile ? for the camera!

It’s hard for me to believe that there was actually a time pre-selfie, when the selfie ? didn’t exist. Even though it really wasn’t that long ago. (Think about it: was anybody selfie-ing back in 2002? NAW, DAWG!)

I like them for practical reasons, like checking to see if my eyebrows are relatively even, gauging just how tired I look on a scale of 1 to zombie at any given moment, figuring out if I have asparagus stuck in my teeth…

Of course, they’re also handy for capturing special moments with friends and family. Those are always fun. 🙂

I can’t say that I loathe them, but I have friends who do, and they’ll stop at nothing to avoid taking a selfie.

Believe it or not, the person in my life who loves them the most is my mom! She’s always angling for a selfie, no matter how routine or mundane whatever we’re doing is. Running to Target? Let’s take a selfie! Sitting on the couch watching Sesame Street with the baby? TIME FOR A SELFIE. It’s cute. She has a bunch on her phone with her and my dad, and half of them have a thumbprint in the frame.

Ahhh… Parents!

Which leads me to our very important question of the day. Selfies: love ’em or loathe ’em?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Like you, I like to use them to check on my makeup. I mean, I don’t loathe them. I guess I like taking them, especially on SnapChat with all the cute filters.

      Hey Barb,

Those cute filters are surprisingly fun, aren’t they? I need to use them more often.

By the way, here’s a tip for checking your makeup with your phone: when you take your pic, use a flash. The flash more readily reveals anything that needs to be fixed.

I rarely take selfies unless they are silly ones with the cats. 🙂 I don’t think I’ll ever be one to buy a selfie stick.

That’s so cute that your Mom loves selfies! I’m old enough to remember the days of having to get film developed so I wonder what type of photo technology will be out there ten years from now.

      Hey Ruchita (and kitties),

Ha, I remember those days too. Do you remember Le Click cameras? I had one in sixth grade. I wish I kept it! Wonder where it is now…

I take them occasionally, certainly not daily. I can’t stand when you’re with someone and they’re completely diconnected from whatever you’re doing together because they’re too busy snapping pictures of themselves for a snap chat that doesn’t involve you, the only other person physically there… That is annoying to me. But then again, I’m a young person without a mobile phone (waste of $$ for me) so that may speak for me.

Like you, selfie serves practical function for me, and I also can’t handle those who cannot start their meal before posting their dish content on instagram/facebook. BUT! If we’re speaking about senior generation, I find it’s great if they do a lot of selfies. It just proves, that they keep themselves up-to-date on latest trends and they’re willing to socialize.

Generally I don’t take them. Occasionally when my makeup turns out super good I’ll take one and send it to my local Tom Ford SA with a thank you, because she’s always helping me with ideas and technique and application.

I think it’s for young people. I never take them…nor do I understand why people feel the need to post pictures of themselves all over social media. Especially older people. I actually think less of them…I will never understand why they do that!

I like them for fun, especially with the filters, but if I need to take one that looks good I loathe them because I am really not good at taking them. And no, practice doesn´t help.

Good lighting helps! So does holding the phone up high.

I don’t care for the narcissism that “selfies” seem to be all about. People could always take pictures of themselves with their own camera and a tripod, but most people never bothered to. Now that it’s really easy to take your picture all day long, far too many people waste their time doing this. Also, posting pictures of food seems really stupid to me, unless the food is something VERY unusual or artistic.

I only do selfies for my blog or Instagram to show the makeup products used. I have phases were I do a lot of them and then phases where I’m absolutely not in the mood to do them. It’s weird! But I always feel kinda weird doing them and also posting them online…but I feel like it is necessary for the “blogging job”. What I find annoying on other people’s selfies is, that they are overly photoshopped. You can’t see, if the foundation looks good or not, if they blur out all their pores and wrinkles, right? Your selfies are always amazing, to really see how the product looks on real skin and I admire that! I’m like that! I show my real face too! 🙂

I took a bunch of them after I got my hair cut several years ago, but I’m pretty much over them now. I think the fact that everybody in the universe has overdone them so much, I’m tired of them.
