Prospecting Ain’t Easy: Benefit Gold Rush Blush Takes Work

March 28th, 2018 by Karen 24 Comments

benefit gold rush blush pacaging
The newest boxed blush by Benefit

Girl, I used to wear shoes like the pair on this box of Benefit Gold Rush Blush, and I’d be able to run in them, too!

Ah, memories of my former taller life… And by “taller,” I mean 5 feet 5 inches tall in 4-inch ? heels.

(In my mind, I’m a 5-foot-8-inch Glamazon, LOL!)

OK, enough rambling. 🙂 Benefit Gold Rush, their latest box o’ blush, just arrived on counters in two sizes, a full-size 0.17-oz. version for $29, and a smaller 0.08-oz. mini for $15. Both are peachy pink with big baddie gold flecks.

That top layer of golden shimmer is an overspray, but there’s also glitter within the peachy pink powder itself. So you won’t be hurtin’ for glitter with Gold Rush. That’s all I’m sayin’.

benefit gold rush blush pan
Yes, that’s an overspray, but there’s also glitter within!

You also won’t be hurtin’ if you’ve been looking your whole life for a HEAVILY scented blush that’s strong enough to pass for a perfume, because this one can.

All of Benefit’s boxes o’ blush are scented (I believe), but this is the strongest one. Definitely the strongest I can recall. I get strong sandalwood and sugar notes, and it’s also supposed to have citrus and vanilla, but I don’t detect those at all.

So, I actually like quite a few perfume-y powders, like Guerlain and Chanel bronzers, and I totes don’t mind smelling like a Nordstrom fragrance counter when I wear them, but Gold Rush is a tad too sweet for my taste. I think it’s cloying, like it belongs in a hot pink body spray with neon star-shaped glitter, but you know how it is with scented products. Just because I’m not a fan doesn’t mean you won’t love it.

benefit gold rush blush swatch
Look closely, because the swatch is there, man!

Also, you’d probably laugh if you saw me applying this blush, because I look like I’m churning butter or grinding herbs with a mortar and pestle. LOL! I have to work to get it to show up, man.

The stiff white brush it comes with actually does a pretty good job. I just push it into the pan REALLY hard, and swirl it around and around and around to pick up enough product, and if you’re caramel latte like I am, you’ll need to pile it on, but lighter lasses between light and medium won’t have to work that hard at all.

benefit gold rush blush cheek swatch
That’s four (4!) layers of Gold Rush on my cheeks, and you can still barely see it, yah?

Here’s the thing, though: even with all the effort this blush takes, I like how it looks on my skin. I think it looks “natural” (in airquotes because of the glitter) and pretty, especially when I just wear it on bare skin or tinted moisturizer.

It’s lovely, but you gotta be in the mood to work.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hi Karen, do you like Benefit’s other boxed blushes? I can’t remember if you said you do. I don’t know if this will be right for me because of the glitter, but I like error proof because it’s sheer.

      I’m 5,5 so we’re twins when you’re in your heels! 🙂

      Hi Robin,

Ahh, so we are petite sisters! 🙂 Random but where do you usually shop for your clothes? I’ve had the best luck with petite items at Ann Taylor and LOFT. J. Crew is a pretty good fit for me too!

My life seriously changed when I discovered petite sizing… I no longer looked like I was stealing clothes from somebody else’s closet, LOL!

        Hi
Ann Taylor and Belks. Belk.com – They have their own line called Kim Rogers and sell petite shirt size pants. No hemming!! I miss the Petite Sophisticate store!! Really nice clothes.

Yeah, I pass on blush you can’t really see, had to give up with coralista too. A lighter skinned friend was happy to inherit it 🙂

LOL! Yeah… If Connor was a teenager I’d probably pass this onto her. 🙂

Have you ever tried Benefit Dallas? I love that shade and Hoola the most!

No, but thanks for the recommendation 🙂 right now I am trying to use up a MAC, a Clinique and a Wet n Wild blush before I purchase anything new 🙂

Good for you! I am way too much of a blush hoarder to have your discipline. LOL! Is your Clinique blush one of the ones with the pretty flower design in the pan?

Thx, and yeah. I love it, got it in the Clinique advent calendar. I’m actually quite proud of myself, went to the Sephora flagship store in Copenhagen the other day and only purchased a hand cream 🙂 was SO tempted by the Huda beauty palettes and the Marc Jacobs eyeliners, but have tons of products to use up first.

Oh nice! Those advent calendars are such a fun way to discover new products to love without having to commit to full sizes.

I hope your hand cream is good! I am obsessed with this one I found at a grocery store we have here (Trader Joe’s) but unfortunately it’s limited edition. WAHHH!

This is how I feel with both MAC blushes I own. Like I have to scrape with everything I have just to get a hint of color. A) I am quite fair and B) I do NOT want to wrestle with blush!!! But ya it looks pretty on you Karen, for sure! I would never use it because of all the effort!

I remember seeing Carrie Bradshaw run after the dog in shoes like that and I was completely in awe. I have never ever been able to do that.

      Hi Diana,

Hoola is my favorite! I like that Benefit is always trying new things but let’s be real… Their old school shades are some of the best things in the line. Gimme Hoola and Dallas any day. (Please tell me you’ve tried Dallas!)

Had to check my stash for Dallas. No never tried! Is this the best one? I have the Cheeky Sweet spot box with Dandelion, Bella Bamba, Rockateur, Hoola, Coralista. And Galifornia I have a mini of. I think that will be it for hoarding Benefit lol Why, oh why do they seem so pretty in the box but nothing extra special on me ( Hoola yes).

Hope you have a great Easter Sunday hosting at your house! ??

So if you like Hoola you will like Dallas. I think it’s the best one. It’s not too shimmery and has that sunkissed bronzy peach look to it. I reviewed it literally a billion years ago; here’s the post but please note back then I couldn’t take a picture to save my life and my brows were a mess, OMG! The text still holds up though, thank goodness! LOL

Ooh Dallas sounds nice! Maybe I just like bronzers even though i “collect” pink and coral blush lol I will check it out and promise not to say don’t be ridiculous Karen, my makeup/hair inspiration, you could never take a bad picture ever…

Hubs and I are without all our parents for the first time (we are both 49, my parents&stepdad all passed in the last 2 years) so we are taking a trip to the Cape (yes it will be chilly a bit, we are nuts lol) renting a cottage with a fireplace &having a nice dinner in my mom’s favorite restaurant to honor them? Making the best of by the beach….Thank you for asking, and take some photos of Connor Claire&Tabs with their Easter Baskets!!

It is super nice. It’s one of the oldest things in their line and it’s one of the best things. I wish they didn’t make the pan smaller (GRRR) but at least the color hasn’t changed over the years.

I think any time you can go to the beach is a good time, and going to your mom’s favorite restaurant is a beautiful way to honor them. Maybe order a dish that they loved while you’re there? 🙂 I hope you have a wonderful time!

That’s awesome! I’m sure he’ll love the change in pace. I *wish* I could travel with Tabs… He is 100% not a car kitty. 🙁 Does Kitty Face stay in his carrier while you travel? Or is he allowed to walk around the car.

It’s funny, my dog HATED the car, but Kitty Face jumps right in! He loves to come with us. Thats probably not usual lol He stays ok in his carrier but I do let him walk in the back seat with safety harness if hes really antsy (and slower side roads not highway) We stop a ton for him to walk and don’t take him longer than a 4 hour trip (Cape is 3.5 hours from me). Will take pics for you. Tabs is head of security, he can’t leave, he has a strong work ethic ?

This looks gorgeous on you, but that’s a lot of work!

I used to wear really high heels in high school all the time – I’m somewhere between 5’6″ and 5’7″. However, my mom’s 5 foot even, with two sisters shorter than her, so I look a little out of place at family events LOL!
