What’s One Change You’ve Recently Made to Your Makeup Routine?

May 1st, 2018 by Karen 29 Comments

Come on, we’re all beauty addicts here. You must have changed something lately. Mine is that I swapped black liner for colorful shades on my upper lash line.

Mind you, I’m still extremely on board with black on my upper water line (Chanel 88 Noir Intense for life), but dang! — purple, blue, green, gray or brown on the upper lash line — basically any color other than black — is the business. I think my eyes look MUCH bigger and brighter when I wear bright liner.

Of course, this revelation could also be a feeble excuse to expand my eyeliner collection, haha! But that’s cool. I’m OK with that. 🙂

How about you? What’s one change you’ve recently made to your makeup routine?

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Hi! It’s the Saphir Kajal from the 2017 Estee Lauder Victoria Beckham collection.

      Hi Margaux,

I have a few! I like Chanel Stylo Yeux in Marine, Urban Decay Invasion and Urban Decay Sabbath.

I realized that I’m unable to apply my bronzer anymore. Had to change it.
I used bronzer for sculpting for many years and it really looked great.
Since I have my toddler boy to continuously look after, I’ve gained some weight and face has become rounder. With the same application method I realized recently that the result started to look weird – I felt like trying to sculpt the balloon?.
Thus I use two bronzer shades now. The darker one is still for sculpting the cheekbones but the lighter one I apply to the apples of the cheeks, temples and jaws and blend with the darkest shade.
Damn’ that extra weight. It makes everything more complicated?. Even makeup application.

I went through a phase that ended just recently where I didn’t wear blush. I’m not sure why. But, I broke the fast by reordering a blush I’d run out of–Bobbi Brown in I think it’s called pale pink–doesn’t look so pale in the compact but it’s a beautiful wash of pink on the cheeks–or at least on my palish skin.

I think the blush makes me look so much more awake and healthy.

I also started putting brightening powder over my undereye concealer and I can’t even describe the difference that’s making in how I look. I was so skeptical but it makes me look ten years younger.

I’ve actually ditched eyeliner all together! I can’t believe this would ever happen!
i found it being very time consuming, running during the day and ending up with raccoon eyes.
I also found that the right eyeshadow and mascara combo made my eyes look more natural and younger? so maybe the liner was aging me. who knows.

    I’m currently digging it!

I’m not tossing my eyeko duo liner just yet tho, I’ll just save it for special occassions when I know I will have more time to sit down and do my make up and I know it will stay put 🙂

I’m finally trying some brighter lip colors! After years of wearing nude glosses, I am ready for some color. I am also wearing more tinted moisturizer rather than a full face of foundation.

I’ve been doing the same – I’m loving NYX’s Sapphire on my upper lash line these days, it packs a punch but isn’t too far out of my black liner comfort zone.

Also, I literally just jumped on the highlighter wagon after realizing you can actually keep it to a subtle glow without looking super shiny (which doesn’t suit me at all).

Really digging it! I feel like the addition of one little step has brought me out of a makeup rut.

A few things. I’ve noticed that my preference for myself is much lighter, more natural looks. My gel eyeliner I’m trying to apply the line as thin as possible, less mascara, more fluttery looking. 2017 was mega stressful for me and I noticed my hair was falling out more, and now my eyelashes are very thin and I have bald spots in my brows that I never had. I used to over apply my blush but now I’ve toned down. I can’t really wear much of anything on my lips anymore, just balm.

A bunch. I’m in a transitional state, makeup-wise, lately. (1) Ditched foundation. I really only need it to cover the wildly pink rosacea on my cheeks, but because of the rosacea, my skin texture is really displeasing to my eye and foundation sits on it horribly no matter what I put under it. Blah. Done. I’m looking for a good powder to just tone the pink down and make it look intentional. I’m going to have a look at the MAC one you were talking about recently. (2) I, too, have ditched eyeliner and am using eye shadow for all purposes. (3) I’m going with a more natural eye look in general. “Natural,” you know, when natural means a carefully shaped, meticulously placed assortment of 45 different shimmers and mattes. I love it, though.

I have started using an electric facial brush for cleansing once a day! Not one breakout since. I bought a generic one off amazon and saved well over $100. Couldn’t be more pleased.

I recently started using cream blush! I’m an oily gal so I always stood away from cream products. On a whim (Target run) I picked up ELF beautifully bare in peach. Now I can’t put it down. Wore it the other day with no other makeup and it gave me a sun kissed look. I’m obsessed!

I’ve been wearing very little makeup if any. My skin has been decent and I work from home. I swim a lot too, so it seems silly to use makeup that’s going to need to come off before swimming after work.

With that caveat, I’ve stopped using traditional foundation when I do leave the house and need to look a little more collected. My skin is no where model perfect but NARS Skin tint or if I need SPF Dr. Jart Tiger Grass Color Corrector is like a miracle. I’ve had family tell me if they didn’t know they would just assume I had perfect skin. Honestly, with the Dr. Jart from a two foot distance my skin does in fact look perfect. It’s honestly amazing and wholly suggest picking it up for your low key days if the color works for you.

    Hi Karen ,
Found a dark green eyeliner by Rimmel that’s totally waterproof in the dollar store !
You know Rimmel uses Coty Labs from back in the day .
    Use it pretty often !
I should have bought 10 of them !

Not sure if this really counts, but I’m trying a new mascara – Superfan by Smashbox (previously used Estee Lauder’s Sumptuous Extreme). It certainly defines and separates nicely, and it doesn’t seem to flake or wander; however, my lashes need VOLUME! Maybe as I use it it will dry a tad and give some more thickness (it seems like the first few uses of a new mascara are always a little wonky). I’m kinda hoping not to love it though, ‘cuz I reeeeeally want to try the new Kush mascara from Milk Makeup!

Oh wow Karen, your eyes look amazing in the blue ? Doing the same now with color eyeliners. I find I look less tired and my hazel brown-gold eyes are much more bright gold with green (Bobbi Brown Ivy Shimmer, Kino #08 intense eyeliner) and greenish with Mac Prunella ( thanks for rec!). Also now use a nude liner in waterline. Don’t have to worry about an eyeshadow to perk me up as much now.

I switch my lipsticks more often, to justify my extensive collection, but otherwise I am in kind of in a rut.

First, I’ve stopped putting eyeliner on my eyelid and instead I’m tightlining my upper waterline. I feel like it makes my lashes look much fuller and it’s not as harsh. I’ve also mostly stopped wearing eyeliner on my bottom waterline and instead I’m smudging out eyeshadow on my lower lash line.

Second, I’ve switched form using pressed powder to loose powder. It gives a much more smooth appearance on my complexion. I’ve been using the Fit Me loose powder from Maybelline and I love it! I’ve heard that it’s a dupe for the Laura Mercier loose powder.

I’m definitely in a rut. Sometimes it’s so easy to use the same things day after day when I’m getting ready for work. I need to dig deeper in my stash (or use this as a reason to buy more) for some variety.

You inspired me to tightline yesterday. 🙂 I might have been wrong about UD running on me. The only black liner I could find was from Clinique (granted, I didn’t look for long) so maybe that was the culprit. I used Whiskey yesterday – of course – and it stayed put all day. 🙂 I’ll have to go on the hunt for my black UD. I was positive I had Zero. Hmmmm.

Well this is just another excuse to go to Sephora, isn’t it?! Of course you could always break down and do Chanel 88 Noir Intense. I’m just saying!

I’ve started wearing under-eye concealer again. I stopped for a while because it made my under-eye skin look so much worse, but my dark circles have gotten so bad that I don’t feel comfortable wearing foundation and no concealer. I hope once the stress of school wears down I’ll be able to stop using it again.

      Hi Katie,

I totally feel you! Have you tried adjusting the amount of concealer you use in the under eye area? I find that the skin there looks much better for me when I use as little as possible (seriously, like just a few dots!).

Yeah, I think I’m going to have to go for a higher coverage concealer and use very little of it! My impulse is to go for sheerer coverage but that ends with me using too much and making the whole situation worse.
