Street Art in the Burbs Be Like…

June 20th, 2018 by Karen 9 Comments

“More bows, mama! MOAR BOWS.”

I spent part of my afternoon drawing pink and yellow bows in the street, and while I quite enjoyed being bossed around by a toddler determined to decorate the neighborhood with drawings of pastel hair accessories, holy wow! — sidewalk chalk is so messy. Your hands, your clothes, your hair — everything gets covered in chalk dust.

How did I forget such a messy, fun part of childhood?

Oh, and we happened upon quite the mystery in the driveway when we discovered this…

A bird’s nest…
…without birds!

A huge oak tree overhangs our garage, and when I looked up, I heard baby birds chirping but couldn’t see them… I wasn’t sure what to do with the nest, so I picked it up using two sticks so as not to touch it with my hands and placed it securely on top of some nearby bushes.

I hope the birds ? are OK.

Your friendly neighborhood beauty addict,

Karen

Our whole street is covered in chalk drawings, ranging from pretty basic (our house) to intricate paintings where the neighbourhood girls already attent school. Messy and a lot of fun.

That second picture just cracked me up. It’s just like “what is going on here? Why are there not more bows??”. HAHA! Oh, I hear you on the chalk – such a mess. We actually gave away all of ours a couple of weeks ago. It was sort of sad but when they’ve been sitting in a cupboard with bubbles for about a decade, it might be time to pass them on to someone who will actually use them. 🙂

That’s sad about the nest – I hope they’re OK, too.

Yes, we had quite the sidewalk chalk session a few weeks ago with our three youngest nieces. The 11 y/o decided to draw the logos of my favorite on-line stores in a line up the front walk. (The stores I get the most packages from, like Sephora and Amazon.) She is such a nut, lol. Like the UPS man doesn’t know his way to our front door. She really is an amazing artist, though; those logos were dead-on, even drawn with chunky chalk.

You don’t have to worry about touching the nest with your hands; it’s a myth that the parent birds won’t accept it if they smell your scent on it (birds actually have fairly poor sense of smell). Of course, the nest might have mites in it, so maybe best not to touch it after all…

Looks like so much fun!! I miss those giant sticks of chalk and drawing with my daughter. Last summer I was coming home from my run and some child drew a train with over 100 cars on the walk ways in the park across the street. It went all along outside the baseball outfield and around the corner to home plate. I’m guessing it took a while to draw. I actually pulled out my phone and did a video of it walking along the drawing.

Probably no need to worry about the nest – it’s the time of year when birds start fledging and leaving the nest anyway. In many cases, they may leave the nest before they’re fully able to fly, because it’s safer to be somewhat mobile on the ground than to be stuck in one place in a nest.

Sounds like a fun day! <3

Thank you for the info, Lexica. We’ve had a few nests in the trees around our house (and a couple times they’ve nested in the crevices in the upstairs deck off my bedroom), and every time I find an empty nest I immediately start worrying about the baby birds. I hope these guys are OK.

P.S. How do you know so much about birds? Are you a birdwatcher?

Baby girl is getting tall, she’s growing up already. More bows, lol she’s a girly girl too cute! I remember letting my kids draw with chalk on the street and pavement. So much fun!
